The Pre-Game was abysmal and the rest just as bad

Apart from taking forever to get the game on, the actual coverage was horrible, absolutely horrible.

The pre game used to fire me up and have me raring to go. Last night it was painful and cringe worthy.

The Phil Gould monologues are done, heard it all before, and now they seem forced and over the top.

A new all time low with the history of State of Origin told from the view of Lang park…..whose idea was that!

Even the analysis was basic stuff, it is like they dont want to complicate things too much by providing thoughtful insight. The casual observer might find it interesting, but anyone who is a student of the game is almost insulted by it. The AFL do very interesting analysis of stats and style and areas of advantage etc, Rod Kafer in the rugby does some really great stuff that gives the viewer a great understanding of what each team is trying to achieve. Rugby league coverage could do that, but choose not to.

Yvonne Sampson is professional as a presenter and Sterlo is ok. The rest are atrocious. I thought Finchy was ok, but I like the guy and think he is great bloke, so i am almost certainly bias.

Ray Warren is a painful caller who has lost it (I dont think he was ever that good TBH) and the musings of Gould are painful. The Fatty Go QLDer stuff was ok decades ago, but is boring and annoying.

Wally, Joey, Freddy and Lockyer. 4 of the best 10 to play origin easily, between them not one interesting insight into the game at all.

Fox is light years ahead in coverage. The other sports a further ahead again.

I reckon channel 9 likes it bone head coverage, it could easily take the parts they like from other sports or fox, they have budget , but choose not to....

When you have a Channel 9 TV coverage which begins around one hour before the match actually kicks off what else but triviality and wall to wall advertising can you fill the time up with.

Wally most have told that story about Qld before SOO 3000 times the poor bugger

And that idiot Fittler's response …...

Like NSW , Channel 9 has a old boys club , and unless you are prepared to play the fool , your out

Champions of the game that could give real insight into what makes SOO such a different kettle of fish

Then again , in their day they only had 2 subs , they'd played 80 minutes , no interchange , probably got paid nearly nothing to play , and its was a true war and the you could throw a punch

I'd take watching Dowling and Backo go at it v Roach and Lazarus any day of the week

True hard men

How I'd love to see another network get a go at broadcasting rugby league. Nine seem to like to typecast it as a bloke's sport, and dumb everything down to the lowest common denominator. Gould spends more time trying to bait Warren than actually talking about the game. Fittler and Johns are there purely for the giggles.

I want my sport played seriously and broadcast seriously. Please, show it some respect!!!

All is not lost…2017 Fox dedicated 24/7 Rugby League Channel Launches...

Until then whenever I have to suffer Ch 9 which is only Origin and finals now really...MUTE is my friend and ABC Radio is the plan...

I thought they missed a massive opportunity last night when Maloney took his time to convert his own TRY after running 90m to slip in another Add..well I spose we didn't see Reynolds convert Frizzel's but still a wasted chance for 9...

I hope they do it well.

I quite enjoy the AFL channel, and watch AFL 360 most nights, enjoy the Open Mike show as well.

The NRL 360 is ok, Ikin and Kent IMO are very good. They havent got the right guests yet. The regular guests make the show. The guests are too jokey and rarely speak openly and forthrightly.

The AFL have current coaches who give amazing insight, particularly Chris Scott. The players they have always have had personality, but are also serious and intelligent, they are not jokers. Ennis and Benji arent to bad on the NRL version, but pull up just short on giving a technical opinion on the footy.

The legends night has a great mix, David King does great statistical analysis and Mark McClure does the more heart and feel stuff, together it works. We could easily find 2 characters to get that blend right, as long as we stay away from the back in my day types. Matty Elliot might be a good option for the technical stuff. Loads of guys could do the Maclure job.

I fear that we might end up with more Matty Johns and mates playing the fool, not what I want on the footy channel

The NRL have those characters in the game

at the risk of sounding a nark,i find the whole state of origin thing a chore.

Yes i ll watch it,but i would prefer to see my side playing every week.

the lack of genuine competititive international football eg france ,great britain required something to be invented ….... hence state of origin
i am old enough to remember state clashes between queensland and new south wales which nsw won by panels of fencing. They were non contests.

when they brought in state of origin games,it became the games showpiece.some great games and memorable moments.

theres no doubting the popualrity and money spinner it is for the nrl.but it dominates the media to the extent where it is as annoying as political commercials.

and now nsw has won only one out of 13 recent clashes at suncorp stadium.who really cares?

so for the next two weeks will he or wont he make changes to the nsw wales team.that will dominate

the media,i sure,

eventually well get back to the competition and watch our sides every week.-wh ich is what i love.

lets enjoy the tigers the weekend.

9's coverage of league is designed to cater for the mindless bogan idiots that like everything spelled out for them, handed on a platter so as little thinking is required. That's basically what most free to air tv is like. Lazy and boring.

Fox is a specialty product designed for those who actually love the game. The coverage of any sport is vastly superior and more insightful than anything on FTA which is designed for the masses. Yes you have to pay for it, but $50 is a small price to pay for your sanity, not to mention the increase in your enjoyment levels of watching the things you love.

Spot on, I watch FOX to avoid nine, but origin and finals I have to suffer through. :frowning:

With the exception of the GF, SOO is supposedly the highlight of the NRL season but to play three matches a season, in a space of a few weeks, also highlights the fact that rugby league is not really the international game it presumes to be. Rugby Union, like it or not, is played in countries such as Australia, England, Wales, Scotland Island, New Zealand, France and the Pacific Islands which play a very high standard of international rugby union. On the other hand international rugby league matches are most often dominated by Australia and are not known for drawing large crowds. For the sake of developing a future truly international game It would be much better for the dominant rugby league nations to spend much more money in the international development of rugby league.

True but there is no hope when we can't even get it right here!

If only the sound of ABC and the vision was co-ordinated? Unfortunately there seems to be a big lag sometimes.

I listen to the ABC coverage a fair bit. Previously I've had mixed thoughts about it but when the current team of Moore, Elliot and Bobcat Ryan get together they seem to have struck a good balance and do quite well - and show that you can be insightful and also entertaining.

Toward the end of David Morrow's reign I was finding him very hard to listen too, just too much yelling. And I'm not a huge fan of Craig Hamilton's call style either.

The Nrl often bang on about it being a family game but the truth is they cater to Ch9,and in doing so the fans suffer,a late starting time, cringe worthy, bias, irrelevant pre game and commentary BS,quite simply the coverage doesn't do justice to the event or the people watching.
