"Tigers saga left trail of damage
As usual at Wests Tigers, it all started with Robbie Farah. But those hoping to read how Farah caused the club to nosedive had better stop now. In fact, it was Farah who first warned the club what they were about to face.
When Farah was asked to play reserve grade to let Luke Brooks, James Tedesco and Mitchell Moses run the show he had a meeting with coach Jason Taylor. "You need to know that I'm the least of your problems," Farah said at the time.
Farah didn't specify what he was talking about, but Taylor's demise after Farah left the club shows he was right. And beyond this year, only Brooks will be at the club.
Fast-forward to this year and Taylor told the media he would not be discussing contracts. It was an out-of-touch comment from the then coach that made it clear he still didn't know how to handle reporters.
Now Taylor is out of a coaching job and doing some media work. And all we have done in recent weeks is talk about contracts.
In the end, the players who had the power tried to push their agendas at the club. Their agent, Isaac Moses, wanted his personal mentor, Joe Wehbe, to get a six-figure deal with the club as the players' mind coach. Next was the fitness trainer, the dietician … Moses would also have loved to put another of his clients, Todd Payten, in as head coach. Taylor's stand against all this cost him his job, but the reality is his decision to empower those members of the "big four" hurt him more.
The club has paid the price for crossing Isaac Moses since then.
We've seen how Ivan Cleary has handled the situation. He's told Mitchell Moses he isn't going anywhere – at least until the Eels come up with a big carrot – and the deadline on Tedesco and Aaron Woods brought a long-running saga to an end.
Isaac Moses should have tidied up this matter at least a couple of weeks ago. The extended nature of the negotiations has been harmful to the players' reputations and, unfortunately, one of the genuine good guys of the NRL, Woods, has had to bear the brunt of it. He's been criticised for not committing to the club he captains and about the amount his new deal will be worth.
Good luck to Woods for getting the most money he can. The only wrong move he made was having a coffee with his Bulldogs mates with so much hype that he was about to do a deal with that club – in the week he was playing that team. Not a great look, even if the chat was just about family and banana bread."
