‘There’s always something going on here’: Brooks’ parting shot at Tigers

As Benji Marshall prepares to front the media on Friday for the first time since Wests Tigers called time on the tenure of head coach Tim Sheens, Luke Brooks could not resist a parting shot at the joint venture.
It was not lost on the halfback, who will join Manly next season, that he was about to finish his Tigers career under yet another coach.

The Wests Tigers have squeezed legendary coach Tim Sheens out before the 2023 season finishes.
During his 11 turbulent years at the club, Brooks will have played under eight head coaches – Mick Potter, Jason Taylor, Andrew Webster, Ivan Cleary – his favourite – Michael Maguire, Brett Kimmorley, Sheens and now Marshall.
“I was only thinking about this on Wednesday about how many coaches I’ve had,” Brooks told this masthead. “It’s pretty crazy when you think a player like Cameron Smith had the one coach [Craig Bellamy] his entire career at Melbourne.

“It does make it tough. A new coach comes in, they put in their systems, then a new coach comes in, and the same thing happens again. It’s hard as a player to get that consistency.
“It’s frustrating as a player. There is always something going on [here]. Tim has done a lot for the club, it’s pretty upsetting the way it [his exit] has happened.

“They had that [succession] plan, it didn’t work out the way we wanted, and our performances on the field [did not help].”
Brooks said he hopes the club sticks with Marshall for the long haul and does not cave to external pressure.

He bit his tongue when asked what he thought the real problem was at the club, nervously laughed and said: “I don’t want to say anything.”
“When you’re not winning games, things start happening, obviously people start talking, but as a club, you don’t want to give in to the media pressure,” Brooks said.

“You need to make the right decisions and not have any outside influence –make decisions that are the right for the club.
“The way Benji is with people, he’s someone you can trust and is easy to talk to. If you can get along with your players, that’s half the battle.”

Brooks said the instability at the club was partly behind his decision to join Manly on a four-year deal worth nearly $3m.
Some officials were unaware at the start of the week that Saturday was Brooks’ final home game. It was later confirmed a farewell tribute had been in the works for a month. Even though he is not retiring or leaving the NRL, Brooks is only the fifth player to reach 200 games for the Tigers.
The fact the game will be played in Parramatta, rather than spiritual Leichhardt Oval or Campbelltown Sports Stadium, meant the farewell had even less significance, said Brooks.
“I don’t really mind if there’s no fuss,” he said. “If it was a Leichhardt game, it would be different, but we have that many home grounds ... it is what it is.”

Brooks rated James Tedesco the best he played with at the Tigers, Chris Lawrence the toughest, Cleary his favourite coach, while his 200th game earlier this season, when he was given a standing ovation –and “Brooks” chant broke out in the main grandstand at Leichhardt during the record 66-0 hammering of North Queensland –a standout memory.
Brooks has dropped five kilos this season and is playing at 85kg, but put the weight loss down to healthy eating rather than the stresses at the club. He skipped training on Thursday, but put it down to “old age”, and haid he would definitely play against the Dolphins.”
Sheens would not comment when approached by this masthead after training, while Marshall said: “See you tomorrow.”

That’s a different article to the one I read earlier.
That one was a bit more critical of the admin.

I find today's journalists more gossipy and I usually tend to ensure there's quotes - for credibility. However the following is being shared in several articles, which I believe came from the DT or FoxSports.

There was cautious optimism at the club that he would re-sign this year, but a contract deadline proved to be the final straw for Brooks who joined Manly instead.

“I think it was (a deal breaker). When they did that it made my mind up,” he said.

“That’s all done now and there’s nothing we can do. We’ve moved on and I’m just looking forward to finishing the year.”

Wests management are dog shit. I wouldn’t be surprised if a business degree in the future includes a module on studying how badly they F’ed up the club

In saying that, Mr. Brooks. Manly are pretty good at creating headlines themselves. We don’t have to go too far back in time to see them either. Karma is a [This word has been automatically removed] bud.

Fascinating that Brooks said Tedesco his no 1 player at Tigers, Lawrence the toughest and Cleary the best coach.
He should know, he’s had eight coaches !
I think he’s sounds relieved to be getting out of the toxic environment.
Nothing toxic for the players......they had it easy.
Doesn't seem toxic for them as a group this year either......seem committed just not good enough.

By the way where did he get 8 coaches from?

I only get 5....and 5 in11 years is about right if your not making finals.

And as for Cleary he'd still be here if he didn't shag us.

According to him MM;
Potter, Taylor, Webster, Cleary, Maguire, Kimmorley, Sheens, Benji.

Can someone explain to me when a player has a contract in front of them for months, no answer, no signature, then when the club patiently waiting puts a deadline, the player says, the deadline did it for me and they signed with another club?????????
Brooks has said it, tedesco has said it, etc.
Not that I'm complaining Brooks has signed elsewhere I think it's time for a change, but don't blame the club you signed elsewhere cause the club put a deadline,

I think it's a BULLSHIT excuse

Agree 6 billion percent.

The club doesn't put a deadline on you because they want to rush players. They put deadlines down because you have been dicking them around and they need to make other moves in the market if you don't accept.

Just let the guy QUIT.

Bye see you Brooks. My why did it have to be the halfback who eventually calls it quits when we had 10+ years of this does not work.

I still can't believe it, some Jnr grade coach gives Brooks 7 and MM 6 and we just stick by that.

8 coaches, never dropped to cup, 1 coach got
him playing good (Cleary). Sweet FA for us since,
served himself. Turned over 20+ combos inside
and outside of him during his career. Admitted
he doesn't study film on opposition several times.
Terrible communicater. Monotoned and mute
for most of his career. Management lived in fear
of losing our last junior, stuck us in shit since.
We appeased him based on being a good, quite
boy. He gets paid 6 mill or so since being with us,
Shits on us by saying the last straw was us giving
him a deadline. Ends up with Kelma, Talau, Aloiai
& Woods at Manly Warriingah with DCE on his
last legs and Schuster next up. We took Fainu
the next generation, same with Illawarra, we
took their next gen too. We've freed the shackles.
I'm counting down the days he goes. He doesn't
deserve any sympathy or special praise. Better
men b4 him got kicked out of the club (Rob & Benj)
unwillingly and have come back to fix the joint
out of love. I'm backing us to never look back
once we finally close this chapter. The young
boys in our pathways are special and this nightmare
will soon be over... Hang in there WT fans

My man what a top post, here here brother✊

Wow. Interesting comments from Mr Average At Best. Since 2020 our win rate sits at 24%. 91 games with 22 wins.
At the Wests Tigers The only thing with a lower percentage are the amount of good games he has had. He should never have left the Lollipop Guild in the land of Oz.
