If I remember correctly, Hasler (with Manly) and Bellamy (Storm) built their teams without any 'marquee' purchase. Broncos are on the same path.

Is it your logical reasoning that we shouldn't go for Thurston because teams can win without marquee purchases?

Firstly, Manly bought Orford and Lyon. Melbourne are a bit different (interstate, breached cap, other factors) so it's hard to compare. Broncos haven't won for a few years so their success remains to be seen. Anyway, they have Prince, Hannant and other excellent purchased players like Wallace who they have 'built' their team on.

Don't forget that prior to 05 we bought marquee in Prince as well as other excellent players in Whatuira, Richards, Hodgson etc and we won the comp.

Anyway, what is the point of mentioning all of this? Do you think that we should never buy marquee players? Are they just for other teams? And more to the point, should we not be in the market for Thurston?

The Bulldogs were the best team in the regular season last year and even they have met with Thurston. But we don't make the 8 and you guys think we don't need him?

I'm not being facetious, I just don't understand how you are honestly professing that we shouldn't even be in the market for a marquee player like Thurston.

Why would they think we're an option, we dont do marquee players.
Ellis was handed to us, and we picked up a winger and a 2nd rower, critical positions to build around

In reality we would have to give up Farah to snare JT so it's basically a Catch 22 situation. The pay packets of Benji, Farah and JT in the same team wouldn't leave much left for the rest of the players in the squad.

JT playing for WT would be bloody awesome, no-one is disputing that, but we don't have an open- ended salary cap so it would probably never happen.

Panthers are really the only NSW based team making a legitimate play for him, and they can only do that because they just freed up well over a million in their cap by dumping Gordon/Lewis/Jennings.

Applying a black and white mentality to a world that has shades of grey doesn't make much sense to me.

For example asserting that anyone who doesn't jump on board with our club moving heaven and earth to make a bid for Thurston automatically means they are defeatist and/or have a loser attitude….thats just small minded and ridiculous.

I reckon that every team would give up quite a bit to get a Thurston. Some just don't want to. It takes a lot of work and restructuring.
IMO, whichever way you look at it, not making a play for Thurston doesn't make sense. Yes it would be a lot of work, but it would be worth it. I will explain why I think that:

In terms of $$, until I see a print out of the wages, P & L, whatever, then all this talk about us not having the cap space is pure speculation. Also, recently the cap was increased by about 1 million. Have the Tigers already spent that too? Surely not!

For those saying that we don't have the funds, I am guessing you have seen our books. I am also guessing you have seen the Bulldogs books and know that they do have the cap space to go for him?
The Roosters just went crazy with player purchases, Melbourne are still recruiting, so are the Sharks. Cowboys just signed Scott long term. Is this cheating the cap or creative accounting? Who knows, but all these clubs have found the money when it counted, so why can't we do that?

Maybe we are afraid of being outbid, or maybe we afraid of rejection.

On being Outbid: We should definitely throw our hat in and if we lose then so be it. I can wear that. I'd rather give it a good whack and lose than not try at all. Like it or not, not even trying IS defeatist.

On Rejection: Being afraid of rejection by JT himself is not defeatist, it's just an inferiority complex. True, he might not want to play here, but I could wear that if he came out and said it. At least we would have tried.

As a famous saying goes "It is better to have bid for Thurston and lost, than never to have bid at all".

Thats not and never has been the issue here, of course I want him here, I also want Slater/Gallen/Scott/Uate etc.

And have I seen our books? Nobody here has, but common sense can take you a fair way when discussing these things. Anyone that think just because thurston visited Bulldogs HQ that they are in the running to sign him, have rocks in their head.

And repeat: its NOT because I don't want Thurston here…..

If we lose Farah then we should definitely be making a big play for Thurston if he is still available. We'd be fools to not look into buying him, he is one of the best players in the world and is incredible at coming up with the big play to win a game. I would love him at the club, but not at the expense of our current captain.
