all still playing with us from the 05 gf winning team
not too many clubs would have something like this going for them

Someone needs to go and watch the 05 season highlights again. Our current side on paper looks better but the 05 side chews them up spits them out and then runs rings around them.

I think you'll find that's probably just Fitzy…

If it got down to a close game, I think the current squad would be able to close the game out and win, but I don't think the '05 team would let it get that close anyway.

With Moltzen at halfback and TnT on the wing though, this team could beat '05

There wouldnt be a close game with the 05 vs 10 squad.

05 Scored plenty or let through plenty

Yeah but the trend this year is the opposite. We'd probably hold them out, but score very little against them.

I agree with the kicking, both in play and for points. We are shocking and if you disagree have a look at the broncos game last fri. It was diabolical. Also I still cringe with fitzhenry under the high ball.

Here here….....we COULD play the game in 05\. Our attack this year is existing on repuattion alone - we aren't within 20-30 points of that 05 side.

Never before has a footy team missed a winger like the Tiges have missed big Patty Richards.

Yes, his kick offs and line dropouts made a significant difference.

Scott Prince in the difference and has been since leaving in 2006\. Despite this, we have some promising halves to finally fill his boots in the form of Lui and Moltzen.

I'll save the comparisons for the end of the year. After 17 rounds in 05, we were sitting in 10th spot on 18 points after having smashed Manly at Leichhardt (49-24). We had only started our charge to the finals the week before at Kogarah.

I can't imagine there would have been too many on here singing the Tigers praises after 17 rounds of the season in '05.

Couldnt agree with your last point even though I wasnt using this forum at at hat stage. I for one thought we would win the comp after we beat Cronulla at Shark Park, and I thought for most of the season that we were legitimate hopes as we were clearly one of the form sides even though we were no good things of making the semi's at one point. Some of our efforts in defeat that year(Dragons/Manly) were better than most of our wins this year.

In comparison this year we look morals to make the semi's but I reckon we're just making up the numbers.

2010 team looks better on paper however, 2005 team worked better as a unit and had more self-belief. Plus, had one of the best halfbacks in the comp in Prince.

Shows how critical it is to have a good halfback.

I'll have to take your word on 05, but we didn't play the Sharks till round 21 at Shark Park. By that stage we were well into our winning streak and everyone was jumping on the bandwagon.

Heres what i think

**2005 2010**
1\. Brett Hodgson 1\. Wade McKinnon
2\. Daniel Fitzhenry 2\. Lote Tuqiri
3\. Shane Elford 3\. Blake Ayshford
4\. Paul Whatuira 4\. Chris Lawrence
5\. Pat Richards 5\. Beau Ryan
6\. Benji Marshall 6\. Benji Marshall
7\. Scott Prince 7\. Rob Lui
8\. Anthony Laffranchi 8\. Bryce Gibbs
9\. Robbie Farah 9\. Robbie Farah
10\. John Skandalis 10\. Keith Galloway
11\. Ben Galea 11\. Liam Fulton
12\. Mark O'Neill 12\. Gareth Ellis
13\. Dene Halatau 13\. Chris Heighington

14\. Liam Fulton 14\. Daniel Fitzhenry
15\. Chris Heighington 15\. Junior Moors
16\. Bryce Gibbs 16\. Simon Dwyer
17\. Todd Payten 17\. Andrew Fifita

If only it was as easy as this, colouring in players etc. I think a few players in that 05 team have been underestimated, like Galea . The fact is there are so many variables. Prince at number 7 had so many benefits. Firstly it made Benji alot better player, and id even say Farah. so id say Farah and Marshall in 05 were better players than in 09\. As well as that we obviously had a much better goalkicker and kicking game which are two huge factors. Another thing we had back then was a kickchase … remember how well whatuira and hodgson were at chasing and how theyd always be off princes shoulder when he kicked? Remember how many tries Fats got as a result.

On that, another huge thing we had in 05 which we don’t have now is combinations. To the guy who said Ayshford is better than Elford then that is a terrible terrible call. Shane Elford in 2005 was an absolute force. Along with Pat Richards on the left hand side they were the most destructive and battering combination of them all. Yes Pat Richards took the glory but how many of his tries did Shane Elford put him away. Shane Elfords draw and pass was so underated it wasn’t funny and his defence was very strong.

I guess you could also say we had a very good style in 2005 which now every coach knows about and may be a little out of date, or definetly doesn’t have the impact it had back then.

Individual players against others are one thing, the same from five years apart is another.
Then you have the two teams as a whole to consider…then the oppositions, draws etc etc

I do however like wattos I think it was call, '10s forwards and '05s backs....would be good to see

I cant believe that anyone would argue that this claim could have some merrit.
IMO the 05 side would absolutely pants this team with a score very reminiscent to the first final against the Cowboys….they would run rampant.

The main reason I say this is because in 05 they played as a team...they played for each other. They weren't a collection of superstars - as was reflected with only the one rep player coming out of the side that year, they were a TEAM. They played against two sides that were collections in Broncs and Dragons and dusted them both with their enthusiasm and brilliance.

Our defense in 05 was just as useless as it has always been with the one exception. There was still plenty of missed tackles, but the scrambling defense to cover for them was second to none. That came back to them wanting to do it for each other. I dont know how many times I saw a team bust our line and not score....it was a lot.

With our kicking game Prince would put the ball down into the corners and unleash half a dozen chasers who would nail the runner in his 10 or 20\. This hardly ever happens anymore.

Our forwards in 05 were pretty small. They definetly were not imposing. They were smart. They ran opposing packs ragged with their speed around the ruck, offloads and backing up. There were so many examples in 05 where a back would make a break, run 30 meters and pass to a second rower who would score under the posts....they were always around. Blokes like Heighno and Payten still play like this but the rest dont.

In 05 we were lead around the field by a bloke who could take instruction and execute it. He knew when to play percentages and when to chance your arm. Prince knew how to close out a game and when to let Marshal off his leash. He didnt panic. He just kept running the plays and awaiting his chance.

The support play in 05 was by far supperior as well. How many times did the right winger make a break yet the left winger scored the try? If someone made a bust, the whole side chased and backed up. On Friday when Benji made his break, the only bloke who was within 30 meters of him was Daniella. In 05 when he put the ball down he would have been surrounded by team mates instantly.

The biggest reason however would be Benji.....In the back half of 05 he was an immovable force - a freak of nature. He was twice as good for us in our run as Hayne was last year for the Eels.

All in all, I believe that if the '05 mob played the '10 mob the score would be 52-10 to the '05 boys...with a huge crowd watching.
