IMO the 05 side would absolutely pants this team with a score very reminiscent to the first final against the Cowboys….they would run rampant.
The main reason I say this is because in 05 they played as a team...they played for each other. They weren't a collection of superstars - as was reflected with only the one rep player coming out of the side that year, they were a TEAM. They played against two sides that were collections in Broncs and Dragons and dusted them both with their enthusiasm and brilliance.
Our defense in 05 was just as useless as it has always been with the one exception. There was still plenty of missed tackles, but the scrambling defense to cover for them was second to none. That came back to them wanting to do it for each other. I dont know how many times I saw a team bust our line and not score....it was a lot.
With our kicking game Prince would put the ball down into the corners and unleash half a dozen chasers who would nail the runner in his 10 or 20\. This hardly ever happens anymore.
Our forwards in 05 were pretty small. They definetly were not imposing. They were smart. They ran opposing packs ragged with their speed around the ruck, offloads and backing up. There were so many examples in 05 where a back would make a break, run 30 meters and pass to a second rower who would score under the posts....they were always around. Blokes like Heighno and Payten still play like this but the rest dont.
In 05 we were lead around the field by a bloke who could take instruction and execute it. He knew when to play percentages and when to chance your arm. Prince knew how to close out a game and when to let Marshal off his leash. He didnt panic. He just kept running the plays and awaiting his chance.
The support play in 05 was by far supperior as well. How many times did the right winger make a break yet the left winger scored the try? If someone made a bust, the whole side chased and backed up. On Friday when Benji made his break, the only bloke who was within 30 meters of him was Daniella. In 05 when he put the ball down he would have been surrounded by team mates instantly.
The biggest reason however would be Benji.....In the back half of 05 he was an immovable force - a freak of nature. He was twice as good for us in our run as Hayne was last year for the Eels.
All in all, I believe that if the '05 mob played the '10 mob the score would be 52-10 to the '05 boys...with a huge crowd watching.
Which 05 team you talking about?
The one at the start of the year, or the one at the back end?
