TIGERS BEAT NEWTOWN 36-30 IN NSW CUP TRIAL

Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers completed their pre-season trials with a come from behind 36-30 victory over Newtown Jets at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today.

In a match played in warm conditions, the Tigers overcame an 18-6 half-time deficit to produce a fine second half performance to storm home.

Five-eighth Dane Chisholm, full-back Linc Port, second-rower Shaun Spence and big forward Ava Seumanufagai had fine games in the win.

Chisholm directed the team well around the field and set up two tries for Port with sharp passes while his kicking game was solid. Port showed how elusive he can be in open space and ran off Chisholm well. Port looks set for an exciting season in the number one jersey.

The opening 10 minutes saw Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers get a few attacking opportunities with centre Tim Simona pushing off 3 defenders with his right arm in a 30 metre run.

Newtown opened the scoring in the 11th minute through a try to half-back Blake Davies for a 4-0 lead. Davies converted the try for a 6-0 lead.

The Jets went to an 8-0 lead when Nick Eshman ran off a short ball to score for a 10-0 lead. Davies converted the try for a 12-0 lead.

Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers opened their account in the 29th minute when forward Ava Seumanufagai crossed next to the posts. Centre Sean Meaney converted the try for a 12-6 scoreline.

The Jets took an 18-6 lead into half-time when winger Reece Jaeger scored in the corner. Davies converted the try from the sideline.

2nd Half
Balmain Ryde Eastwood Tigers started the second half perfectly with a try in the 43rd minute to full-back Linc Port over in the right corner. The try came on the back of a perfect short ball by Chisholm to put second-rower Shaun Spence in the clear before linking up with port for an 18-10 scoreline. Meaney failed to convert the try from the sideline.

Port scored his second try 3 minutes later when he stretched out with his right hand to slam down the ball over the line after another good ball by Chisholm for a 18-14 scoreline. Meaney failed to convert from 10 metres in from the sideline.

Two minutes later, Newtown crossed under the posts through prop Isaac Lui for a 22-14 scoreline. Davies converted the try to give the Jets a 24-14 lead.

A kick on the last tackle was left by the Jets to allow Simona to leap high to catch the ball to score over the line in the 58th minute. Meaney converted the try for a 24-20 scoreline.

Balmain Ryde Eastwood drew level when Seumanufagai crashed over next to the posts in the 61st minute. Meaney converted to give the Tigers a 26-24 lead.

Five minutes later, back Dayne Craig scored next to the posts to give Balmain Ryde Eastwood a 30-24 lead. Chisholm converted the try for a 32-24 scoreline.

Ten minutes from full-time, Newtown five-eighth Trent Trotter scored behind the posts to reduce the score to 32-28\. Davies converted the try for a 32-30 scoreline.

A great cut out pass by Chisholm saw Josh Davis dive over in the corner in the 76th minute for a 36-30 scoreline.

The only injury concern for Balmain was a left knee injury to forward Mundarra Weldon who walked off the field in the 53rd minute. He did not return to the field.

Missed the first 10 minutes of this game but overall Balmain were pretty decent after overcoming a slow first half. From what I saw Chisholm looks like he would handle himself in FG without too many dramas. Linc Port was dangerous at the back although he did have a couple of mistakes in his game. John Grant did not see a lot of ball but had a couple of good touches, although defensively he got caught out twice which led to newtown tries. Among the forwards, Junior Moors looked to be the best of the Balmain bunch, he looks a bit leaner than last year and had a high involvement. BMM did not impress unfortunately. Ava Seumanufagai was strong as was Josh Davis late in the game. Tim Simona also looked sharp.

Cannot believe they have Jack Spencer playing in the front row. The poor bloke got belted on every hitup and is 10kg too light.

The biggest difference came when Russel went to replace Waters at half.

Nathan is a back up reggies hooker and that is about it for mine at this stage.

Politini, Russell & Chisolm work very well together and Linc Port completes a pretty dangerous spine

Jack Spencer was standing next to Tuigimala behind the goal posts at one point and the difference in size was unbelievable. Spencer looked like a prop forward from the local under 16's.

Thought Linc Port looked a really good prospect and agree with Chisholm.

Russel looked sharp. Waters, I hate to say it looks pedestrian out there. BRET have a good backline and a solid forward pack, they just need a good organiser and passer to help Chisholm out.

How did John Grant play???

Got sucked in twice in defence which Newtown scored tries from. In attack he shows promise but his defensive reading needs work. He's got potential, it's just going to take some hard work and perseverence.

Form over reputation plus a pro active coach Should see BRET be amongst the front runners this season, excited about Linc Port and Dane Chisolm, already putting the wind up the established players.
Worried about the reports on Jack Spencer. I had assumed he was an established Super League player from the UK, what are his credentials?, hope the injury to Mandawarra Wheldon is only minor, is he another ARTIE?.

GoldXR50Leroy, Wheldon was a standout in the Parramatta trial but I know nothing about him. Can you please give me a quick briefing to bring me up to speed. Hope is injury is nothing serious as I really thought he stood out from the crown.

Mundarra Weldon is from the Moree Boomerangs. He won their Best and Fairest award in 2011 and some other awards. I understand, from what I've been told he is a ball-playing prop in the style of Artie.

He was going ok until his knee injury. Looks to have some skill about him. Thought they may have stretchered him off initially because he looked to be in terrible pain, but after a couple of minutes he got to his feet and limped off. I daresay it's some sort of ligament damage, but unsure how bad it is.
