Tigers could face ground controversy

The NRL could be headed for another finals venue controversy, with a push for Wests Tigers to host a play-off match at tiny Leichhardt Oval gathering momentum.

The Tigers, currently fourth with five rounds of the regular season left, will earn the right to stage a finals match at one of their three home grounds; Leichhardt Oval, Sydney Football Stadium and Campbelltown Stadium, if they finish in the top four.

The 45,000-seat SFS looms as the most logical venue for the week one qualifying final but the intimidating atmosphere at Leichhardt, which is jam-packed at 20,000, would offer the Tigers a massive advantage despite the threat of thousands of fans being turned away.

Last year the Dragons came under heavy criticism for refusing to shift their 1 v 8 finals match against Parramatta away from Kogarah to a larger venue.
While emphasising the joint venture club had a long way to go before it started thinking about finals football, captain Robbie Farah is excited about the prospect of playing at their spiritual home.

'We'd love to play at Leichhardt,' he told Sportal.
'If we got a home semi I'm sure there would be 30-40,000 West Tigers fans in Sydney that would want to come and watch it so for the fans it would probably be the footy stadium (SFS), but for the players we'd love to play at Leichhardt.'

'You'd have to ask (CEO) Stephen Humphreys about that (venue choice) and the NRL may have the final say anyway, so we'll see what happens.'
'No matter where we play we've got a great following and the Tigers fans always travel.'

Second-rower Liam Fulton fears staging a finals match at the SFS would play into the hands of the Tigers' opponent.
'If I had a preference I'd be going for Leichhardt,' he said.
'Being at the Sydney Football Stadium, that's pretty much like everyone's home ground.'
'It's a semi-final cauldron that most teams get to play at.'
'If we got the chance to play at Leichhardt, I'd love that.'

The NRL chief operating officer, Graham Annesley, confirmed the Tigers would have every right to put forward Leichhardt as a finals venue should they make the top four.
The NRL will begin taking submissions later this month.
'We have played at suburban venues in the past. There's a few ifs and buts about it but at this stage of the year we never rule anything in or out,' Annesley said.
'But we haven't had that discussion with the clubs yet.'
'It's something we will speak to all clubs who are in contention over the coming weeks.'
'Most clubs don't want to jinx themselves by talking about finals.'

Veteran Tigers coach Tim Sheens subscribes to that theory, declaring: 'Don't talk to me about a home final; that's too far away.'

Wow that will create an us vs them between the balmain and wests fans here. For the players it makes sense, but for the fans I'm not so sure….

Sorry Guys - It wont Happen.

SFS for sure and as I have said in the past we will paint the stands Black and Orange.

Id love a home game at the Rectangle,or Cambo.

But I dont think 20k is enough fans.

If one of our grounds held 30k I would be all for it,but I would hate to see so many fans miss out.

Please lets not make this a LO v Cambo thing…..surely we are past this.

Hi everyone

If we got 20,000+ fans at every (or even half) of the normal season games, I would agree that use LO of CS would be unfair to fans. Members would have first go at tickets, I would imagine (one per member only - not like the Grand Final).

That leaves about 14,000 for non-members. And then first in first served. I wonder how many would really miss out??

Anyway, as simonthetigers says, won't happen. Will be at the SFS.

Tigers do rule!! And we are talking about a privilege for a top four spot.

But we never get 20,000 only Tigers fans - we could share the 14,000 (2/3:1/3) among the two clubs!!
(And maybe charge a premium - lol)

I thought there would be something in our contract with the SFS that should we have a home semi we had to play it there? That was the case with Telstra Stadium

Firstly ….I hate it Wests Tigers get ahead of themselves....focus on Souths...NOT HAPPY.. :brick:

As for home semi

Dragons played Parra at OKI Chokie last year didn't they?

IT must be at Leichhardt!!!!

I would say there is .01% chance of this happening.

The Tigers would be well aware that they could easily get more than 20K supporters at a finals game, it would be crazy to limit the crowd to such a small number.

GEO, Iam with you lets worry about the Souths game. Farah comes out and says"we are looking beyond a top four finish" now a media piece out what a pickle we are in for a home semi final if it comes our way.

Kiss of death, we are still not 100% signed sealed and delivered in the eight yet and on recent form you would worry about getting the bacon in any game.

The old saying one game at a time and if and when we have a home semi 100% in the bag than start to worry about it

I for one would love the team to have the advantage of Leichhardt then worrying whether or not I'll miss out on a ticket! the atmosphere would be electric.

The Tigers winning the premiership is more important to me than whether or not I'll see it on the TV or at the ground!

To be honest I'd prefer it at the SFS - especially if it is one of the night time finals.
IMO. 30,000+ at the SFS has as much atmosphere if not more as either Leichhardt or Campbo. We showed against Brisbane in 05 they we can draw 30,000 on our own and the atmosphere was great. Against another Sydney club and the place would be packed ie St George in 05.

Just out of curiosity, is this allowed under the terms of the JV? Surely Western Suburbs would blow up over this decision.

I think it is a silly article filling space in a cr*p tabloid. 40,000 at the SFS v 20,000 at a ground that barely meets NRL criteria. Ridiculous.

Second time in 11 years we make the finals and this story is implying the club wants to sell itself short 10,000 - 20,000 additional fans, not to mention additional corporate facilities. I would think our club's administration would have more sense than to play at Leichhardt or Campbelltown.

'If we got a home semi I'm sure there would be 30-40,000 West Tigers fans in Sydney that would want to come and watch it so for the fans it would probably be the footy stadium (SFS), **but for the players we'd love to play at Leichhardt.'**

Why don't they listen to the players for a change, as they have been gypsies of the NRL since 2000…...If we had it at Leichhardt the Club could use the Maketing ploy of .....become a 12 game season member for 2011 and the club will make sure you have good seats for the Leichhardt Finals match.

Solution is quite simple..

Play one half at Leichhardt and play the second half at Campbelltown.
Luckily this forum has someone like me to lead the way with common sense with a true equal divide..

Sure, that sounds like a great idea. Whilst listening to them, maybe they can all take a 40% pay cut so we can play at grounds that can only hold 20,000.

These ideas are all wonderful and romantic, but they are not profitable given the cost structure (ie: player and staff wages) of the game.

Further to my post above, if we don't finish 1st, we have to play a night semi. Playing a night match further diminishes the profit margin.

The club would have struggled to break even on Saturday night with 15,000.

Very true about the costs Gary. However, I think you will get some great marketing for the greater game by having one of the quarter final games at a traditional ground like Leichhardt. The history is what's great about league. I don't know anyone who wouldn't want to tune in on the TV for a game like that.

Lets face it, it all really depends on who we are playing…. if it's someone like the Roosters, make it leichhardt. If it's Brisbane, then the SFS is fine.

Teams deserve the **promised** home ground advantage for the top 4 finish. They put in the hard work to get there and the NRL has surely factored those assumptions into their Budget.
