Tigers forced to change their style

Wests Tigers captain Robbie Farah blames injury and different combinations for his side's conservative approach in 2011.

The Tigers have widely been regard as the "razzle dazzle" side of the NRL for the past few seasons, with the likes of Farah, Benji Marshall and Robert Lui weaving their magic week in, week out.

But the 2005 premiers have made a relatively slow start to the 2011 NRL premiership, with Tim Sheens's side adopting a more conservative approach.

"I think (attacking approach) comes with the consistency of the playing group," Farah said on Fox Sports Monday Night Football when asked about his side's lack of flair.

"At the moment because we are chopping and changing every week we have found it hard.

"And I think that's why we have probably tried to rein it in a little bit

"When you have got your best 17 on the field playing week in week out, you can afford to throw the ball around a little bit more and play with a little more flair.

"But at the moment we have had a different halfback for pretty much every week

"So it does make it hard when you are continually chopping and changing."

Although Farah is disappointed with his side's start to the 2011 NRL season, he believes his own form has not been up to scratch.

"I think that comes with the consistency of the playing group." Farah said

"I have been finding it hard to get into the games with the ball."

Farah was adamant that success was not far away if his side could hold onto the ball and take their opportunities.

"Hopefully we can start holding onto the ball and get some yardage and that will make my job a little easier," he said.

Yes I agree
I think this is true and that we do need to change our style with playing

All the injuries we have is because the way we are playing so we need to take a step into our games and play better

I thought that picking guys out of position to the detriment of the squad was our style

I have to say, one of Robbie's best interviews on the foxsports video. Great to see the champion a bit more relaxed then his is at the post match conferences.

At least someone in the team has finally mentioned the white elephant in the room and said, that yes, injuries are playing a part in the team not performing.

Having a dud coach doesn't help either

:deadhorse:

Bug, ENOUGH with sticking the knife in!!!

yes bug, we ALL GET IT. You don't like Sheens.

He's a bad coach.

Sack the coach.

he's dumb.

he's crap.

his bench sucks.

He player players out of position.

He insists on having a back on the bench.

He teaches our boys to play soft.

He owes you money, or he shagged your mum/wife/cat, whatever. We get it. You don't like the guy.

Here's a thought bug - SUGGEST SOMEONE TO REPLACE HIM - give an opinion which is a tad more constructive, and PROMOTES discussion on the forum, not one which ends in rhetoric or a :dead smiley.

Honestly champ, you'd probably have a post count so low, that your posts would still be being reviewed by mods if you went back and removed all your Sheens hate.

I hate players making excuses for poor form and i think that is what Robbie is doing here.
The plain truth is if our play makers learnt how to kick properly and if Benji learnt how to tackle instead of jumping and swinging on peoples backs and arm grabbing we beat the Broncos.

Watch Benjis attempt on Thaiday again and tell me who tought this bloke to tackle, also what was he doing when Lockyer strolled over from the scrum? It's actually quite embarrassing.

No one wants to admit the truth that the senior experienced players have lost us our last two games. Yes we have injuries but we have been fielding pretty good sides imo, but the senior players just haven't showed the way or been composed and patient enough.

Gary Freeman said it all…. Quote there is only Robbie Farah in a team end Quote make of that what you want I know I have a few seasons ago!

I think our senior players have been the problem recently. And by senior it is Robbie and Benji. It isn't Sheens. It isn't the forwards lack of go forward or mongrel. It is Robbie's poor decisions and terrible execution, Paytens mistakes (probably not as bad as Robbie and Benji) and Benji's lack of involvement and weak play.

Below is the question I posted to Robbie on Facebook Fox Sports NRL page.Listen to Gary Freeman's question to Robbie about their playing style and tell me that he didn't steal my question and re-word it a bit. I have always said I should be a sports commentator / analystFox Sports NRLQuestion for Robbie Farah:Is the Tigers conservative style of play going to continue or Tim Sheens looking at going back to the adlib stlye and more second phase play to allow yourself and Benji to play what you see instead of playing to the structured game plan. As a Tigers fan I would love to see the Tigers of last year that got you to within one point of the decider.

Agree 100%…..

but lets blame ummmmm Moltzen

Look Benji wasnt that great the past 2 games, but he has been head and shoulders above anyone else all year.

We do need him to return to form this weekend though…Raiders always aim up against us especially in Canberra - this will be a very difficult road trip.

Our play has gone to the dogs for three reasons...

#1 Benji and Robbie arent on their A game. Thats a temporary thing and will be resolved quite easily.
#2 INJURIES. It's not an excuse - it's fact
#3 Team selections. Could come under the injuries banner but I really think that some of Sheens' selections to cover these injuries has really disrupted the flow we had. Motlz playing fullback, Utai and Ayshford being changed to the other side of the field resulting in a drop of form from both, Miller starting when Moltz was in the squad, Woods not playing when we had props out injured.

The injury toll has been horrendous, but Sheens hasnt been too smart in his replacements either.

Definitely but he has gone into his shell the last two games and we could have won both games if he decided to take the game over.

Benji maybe. Robbie is a different issue. He has serious problems with his game that need to be addressed.

This has been a factor.

#3 Team selections.

Easy to say with hindsight but I don't really believe that this is a factor. Moltzen cops the brunt of the criticism but he scored two tries last week. This isn't the problem.

When we had Johnny Cronk at 7 it was an issue. The difference between the two examples are huge.

The truth is that there is plenty of time left to go in the comp. We have quality players and a coach who can lead a team all the way.

We have some problems but they can be overcome.

I really dont think Benji is that style of player mate he is a very reactionary and 'off the cuff' type who needs those around him to present plenty of options. When this happens he continually puts them into gaps.

He isnt a take charge leader…and for the most part never has been. We need Robbie to be that leader, abley supported by Lui.

If these two set the structure and get the forwards heading in the right direction, then Benji can get back to thrilling us by finishing the plays off.

I do think however that Sheens messes with the team setup far too much....tries to be too clever. He has been guilty of doing this for years now. That is not a hindsight call.

He was referring to when he coached Robbie & Halatau in the Tigers Ball team some time back, probably about 01….by all reports back then Robbie was somewhat 'up himself' bigtime.
Whiz sat him on the bench for the season to hopefully allow some ego to seep out
