WESTS Tigers captain Robbie Farah today conceded his club sacked head coach Tim Sheens because players needed a "fresh start".

Farah was speaking for the first time since Wests Tigers management this week axed Sheens as head coach after a decade in charge.

The decision was made amid suggestions Sheens had fallen-out with the club's two superstars - Farah and Benji Marshall.

Asked had Sheens "lost the dressing room", Farah told Fox Sports: "No, I don't think so. Tim has the utmost respect of the playing group.

"I think the decision was made because the club thought we needed a fresh start with some new personnel coming in and trying to bounce back from what was a disappointing season.

"It (the decision) was disappointing.

"Tim has done a great deal for me. He brought me into first grade and has been my coach throughout my whole senior career.

"I think, not just myself, but everyone at the club has a huge amount of respect for him and what he has achieved at our club."

Farah, one of the game's finest hookers, comes off contract after next season with talk he could shift west to join Ricky Stuart at Parramatta.

Tigers CEO Steve Humphreys revealed this week that his club had opened talks with Farah.

"The club has let me know they are keen to keep me," Farah said.

"You have to weight up a lot of things - a new coach and playing roster moving forward and what the new salary cap will be.

"There are a lot of unknowns at the moment.

"You want that sorted out heading into next year. You don't want that hanging over your head."

Asked about Parramatta, Farah said: "I read the reports saying that I will be there.

"Mate, I have a year left at the Tigers. My main focus as the captain of this club is to turn things and help lead them out of what was a disappointing end to the season."

Farah will be glad when 2012 ends, a year when he lost his mum Sonia to cancer and his football side crashed out before the finals.

"It's been tough and definitely the most challenging year I have had to face," Farah said. "Mentally it's been hard and there's been a few things thrown at me.

"You learn from those and deal with them at the time. It's tough but you come out the other end a mentally stronger and tougher person.

"You'd like to think it makes you a better player, better captain and better person. I have definitely learnt a lot."

These two get me worried -

"You have to weight up a lot of things - a new coach and playing roster moving forward and what the new salary cap will be.

"Mate, I have a year left at the Tigers. My main focus as the captain of this club is to turn things and help lead them out of what was a disappointing end to the season."

Kind of agree with you jas83, I'm now less confident he will resign with us, but heres hoping!

Hopefully he is just doing what he manager has probably told him too and make the club nervous and not just expect him to re-sign.

I did not get a negative impression about farahs future on reading it initially….but anythings possible, and he is right, a lot of unknowns make it a similar situation for other players considering coming here

Gotta knock this all on the head first thing next week after the GFs

I agree Ink, I didn't get a negative feel about his response. Indeed, he didn't say anything you wouldn't expect him to say - look at who the coach is and what the playing roster looks like moving forward, as well as the financial side of things - all very reasonable. My belief is that if the tigers get their act together and sort out the finances, Robbie's preferred option will be to stay.

At least he's honest. He will obviously weigh up his options and I wouldn't expect him to be anything other than non-committal at this point in time. This year would have left a sour taste in his mouth, and we'd be kidding ourselves to think he wouldn't be entertaining a move anywhere else.\

I agree with GNR though, throw the sink at him and make it as hard as possible for him to leave. Only player on the pitch you can guarantee won't take a step back.

His next contract will include a ten year discount too.True.

I know this may sound bad , but maybe the best thing for Robbie personally and career wise would be a new beginning or challenge

I hate losing good staff myself , but if its going to be better for them career wise I will give them a hug and wish them best of luck .

I understand what you mean, but I hope his new challenge can be with us, steering the club out of trouble and through the latest adversity.

He is the second best hooker in the world so I hope we keep him - that's a marquee signing if ever there was one. He is only going to get better with regular SOO appearances. No good paying good money for top halfback if we lose Farah who is just as important in the spine equation.

Don't get me wrong LaT ,I hope Farah sees the Tigers without Sheens as a brand new start , but in the same vein , I will understand his position if he leaves , it must be very frustrating for him at times

Farah doesn't know what Farah will do. All tigers have to do is sort their dramas out and pay him what he's worth.
