Tigers tighten up in betting
By Christian Nicolussi From: The Daily Telegraph August 17, 2010 12:00AM
THE nation's biggest bookie is bracing for a $1 million-plus stripout after the popular Wests Tigers firmed to their shortest NRL premiership price yesterday.
Less than 24 hours after their 43-18 thumping of the Panthers, the Tigers firmed from $15 into $9 with TAB Sportsbet for the NRL title.
And an avalanche of cash is expected to follow in the coming month should the exciting joint-venture club continue their charge to the first weekend in October.
Tough back-rower Chris Heighington warned fans last night the Tigers still had plenty of improvement in them and were yet to string together an entire 80 minutes of football.
"I think the best thing about the weekend against Penrith was the fact it was the first time we put away a team," Heighington said.
"We've still got plenty of room for improvement. If we want to do anything in this final series we have to hit form and that means trying to do it again on Sunday against Parramatta.
"I still think the Dragons are the team to beat. We played them on a Friday night about six weeks ago and they make opposition teams shoot themselves in the foot."
TAB Sportsbet's Glenn Munsie said the Dragons remained $3 favourites prior to last night's crunch game with the Sea Eagles, but the Tigers had once again proven the "punters' darlings".
"The Tigers have a wide supporter base, and they're just one of those sides who are popular with everybody," Munsie said.
"They've got popular players like Lote Tuqiri, Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah, and that was the most impressive the side has been [on Sunday] in weeks.
The Tigers, who opened at the start of the season at $17, were $15 before the Campbelltown carve-up, and then yesterday listed at $9, on the third line of betting.
