Tigers tyro James Tedesco eyes fullback spot by: Brent Read From: The Australian February 09, 2012 12:00AM

WESTS Tigers coach Tim Sheens believes James Tedesco is a future NRL fullback.
Whether the future is now will depend on trial form, starting with Saturday night's game against Parramatta on the NSW central coast.

Tedesco, a star in the Tigers' Toyota Cup side last year, has been named in the No 1 jersey for the match against the Eels but Sheens has eased pressure on the teenager, warning it is too early to suggest he will open the season at fullback.

The Tigers have options, including Joel Reddy, Mitch Brown and Tim Moltzen, although the last has been named to play halfback against the Eels. Nevertheless, Tedesco has an early chance to stake his claim for the position against the Tigers' western Sydney rivals.

"He has not played a first-grade game so it's a bit early to be talking about him to any great degree," Sheens said.

…"He is a future fullback. Whether or not that happens will depend on his form this year.

"He's got some ability, there's no doubt about that. I think everyone who has seen him play would say that. The potential is there but we need to handle it carefully.

"The kid has trained at fullback most of the pre-season and certainly, from my point of view, talent-wise, he can handle it."

Tedesco turned 19 only last month but his rise has been rapid. He started last year with Western Suburbs SG Ball side but won a call-up to the Toyota Cup and stayed there the rest of the year.

"All it is is giving him an early opportunity, which he has earned through pre-season training," Sheens said.

"We will be looking at other options. I have spoken to him about that. I have told him not to expect too much. If it happens, it happens. It's a long season, with the little experience he has had, to be asked to carry the team (from fullback).

"It's a big responsibility back there. The pressure is on you all the time; you have to do a lot of talking. There's a whole lot of things that come with fullback besides scoring a try and running the ball back."

Sheens has experience at handling teenagers with big reputations. He handed Laurie Daley his first-grade debut as a teenager and coached against Brad Fittler when the former Penrith and Sydney Roosters star arrived on the scene.

I hope young Todesco Makes the fullback spot his own this season.

JUST days after extending his contract with the Wests Tigers until the end of 2014, little-known rookie fullback James Tedesco looks poised to start the year in the No.1 jersey.

In a clear indication of coach Tim Sheens's long-term plans, Tedesco has been named at fullback for Saturday night's trial against Parramatta in Gosford, with Tim Moltzen to make the shift back to halfback.

The Australian Schoolboys representative, considered by many as a fullback in the Billy Slater mould, attracted plenty of interest from rival clubs in the off-season, hence the Tigers' eagerness to extend his contract by a further two years, despite him having no NRL experience.

Advertisement: Story continues below The Herald was told the Tigers rate Tedesco so highly they didn't offer Jake Mullaney, considered the best fullback to come out of Western Suburbs since Brett Hodgson, a contract renewal this year. The Camden junior began last year playing SG Ball for the Magpies before making the step up to the National Youth Competition, capturing the club's attention with a four-try feat against Melbourne.

The 19-year-old, who went on to win the Tigers' under-20 player of the year award last season, has been given first crack at the No.1 spot, but with Tom Humble, Joel Reddy, Mitch Brown and Beau Ryan all still in contention for the role, Tedesco will have to prove his worth against the Eels at Bluetongue Stadium.

I honestly think he will be given first shot.

I don't think our other options are anything more than squad depth.

He is just trying to keep the hype down, which admittedly is going to be difficult.

Fact is you need a class fullback to win the comp and while we have some "solid" and "good" options, nobody stands out as being top quality. Tedesco isn't either right now but obviously has the potential to be. Can't say the same about any other possible fullback choices.

I saw on a previous post that Manly were also chasing him, possibly to cover Stewart if he followed Hassler to the Bulldogs.

Bad luck to them. We've got now locked in now.

Let's hope we don't put too much pressure on him, but from what i've heard pressure didn't bother him.

Agree. With Marshall and Moltzen directing play in the halves, and knowing Marshall's ability to read the play 3 steps ahead of everyone else, having a guy with natural fullback instincts like Tedesco can only be a good thing. He's got the support play and anticipation to be put into plenty of holes running off the likes of Farah, Marshall and Moltzen, plus he has some decent ball playing ability of his own. Exciting times ahead.

Based on Sheens comments in this article, I think it is fair to say that If Tedesco plays well , he will be the No1 fullback this .

What a valuable opportunity for this kid , hope he grabs would be very enjoyable to watch him develop and build a reputation .

U said it Alf, I love the way Timmy casual says "He's got some ability…... The potential is there" acting completely unaware of what a huge understatement it is, cooling media hype. Then, "I have told him not to expect too much." keeping the kid in check. Classic Sheens!

All the best with the No.1 spot young Teddy

Massive ask of the kid to step up to the role after only a few games in the u20'S. Its not like they are bringing him a gently on the wing, its straight into the no1 role. Lets hope he learns quickly as you will not win the comp without a standout no1\. Sheens is very seldom wrong with the young kids he pushes along early.

Supercoach , you might as well start him at fullback
Starting him in a position he knows will help relax Teddy and we know that Tim knows what he is doing as he brought so much young talent through the ranks in the last 20 odd years

Go for it James You'll be right mate We Tigers fans are 1000% behind you champion

usually have to wait until half way through a season to see a youngster get his shot.
makes the trial games alot more fun when new blood gets a chance to shine.

how safe is this kid under the bomb?
does he go up full bore,or does he have one leg out ready to bail?

all i care about to start is that he can defend kicks at a high %.
the rest will come with experience.
