Tigers' wizardry scares Smith

Sydney Roosters coach Brian Smith says Wests Tigers' escape act against Manly on Monday night ''scared the socks off me'', and kept him awake for hours after the thrilling match.

Speaking before training at Sydney Football Stadium yesterday, where the Roosters will host the Tigers on Sunday, Smith expressed his amazement at the ferocity of the Tigers-Manly game, adding that his team faced a huge challenge trying to keep playmakers Benji Marshall and Robbie Farah at bay.

''That's one of the best and toughest games of footy I've seen,'' Smith said of the Tigers' 26-22 come-from-behind win. ''It was absolutely ferocious. For a large part of the 80 minutes, I just couldn't believe how they just kept going at each other. I reckon we'll need to improve by a considerable margin to compete with them.

''I left here about five minutes before the end of the game and I was still awake about three or four hours afterwards. Just the intensity of that game was enormous.

''They scared the socks off me. You need to do a lot of things right to control such influential players, particularly with that top-end skill they've got and the variety and risks they're prepared to take. We might not get a bigger challenge again, probably until the next time we play them. They are so talented and gifted, and coached to operate that way, so concentration is a really big thing for us.''

Marshall and Farah performed like magicians in the second half to lead the Tigers out of trouble, but the team nearly dug a grave for itself by giving away a big start. The Roosters beat South Sydney 36-10 last Sunday, but Smith was more measured in what he had to say about his own team's performance.

''We did pretty well in most departments, but there were a few areas in which we thought we can improve quite a bit,'' he said. ''I went in the bus to ANZ [Stadium] really unsure of what we were capable of. I got a bit of an insight into what I think we can do, but I've got a feeling that we're going to get a way bigger test this weekend. We've got some pretty tidy footballers in our team, but winning on a consistent basis is our goal.''

Those players who are getting the most publicity are fullback Todd Carney and halfback Mitchell Pearce, but Smith said calls to throw them into the NSW team this year were premature.

''I'm talking them up about having the talent to play Origin, but I reckon they should be made to show that they've got the consistency to play at a really high level for at least 12 months,'' he said. ''If this time next year they are talking about them for Origin, and the Roosters have done well and made the play-offs, then it will be time, [but] not now.''

Smith, Bennet and Sheens

3 of the greatest Footy coaches ever.

Good luck Brian from round three onwards….

The old "try and give the other team a big head trick". Smith is using one of the oldest tricks in the book, try and take the spotlight off your own team and put it on the other, than fly under the radar and take the bacon.

On Monday nights efforts we have a heap of work to do, I think the chooks will defend a lot better than Manly and also are smaller, faster and fitter, add one extra day to prepare for the game than us.

While the wraps are nice we cant afford the boys to be reading the media and believing it.

I am pretty sure that the guys are well aware that this is a tactic from Brian Smith.

On another note - defensively i thought we were really good in Monday nights game. Manly only made 2 line breaks, we missed 21 tackles (equal second), and we topped the charts with dominant tackles (23).

If we are making that many dominant tackles in a game, and then also dominating the ruck in attack, then the game will be won right there - IN THE FORWARDS. The forwards winning a game for the tigers? Never thought i would see the day.

Hats off to the boys performance in round 1.

Smith is right in one sense. What we produced even left me with a scary after thought. Considering we played 30 good minutes of football against a genuine top side. Though he's experienced enough for us to know that he has his own reasons for speaking out He's looking to deflect the attention from his side, they've had a lot of press this week and so have we. Any advantage is a good advantage and assuming the underdogs role is no different.

Tigers wizardry has weakened the heart valves of all Tigers supporters over the years through constant strain

You're right on that one Pete, the Tigers were very good in the opening 20 minutes, were dominated for the next 40 minutes before unleashing an awesome final 20 minutes where we scored 4 tries in 16 minutes.

If the Tigers can put 50-60 minutes together against the Roosters, then they should win IMO, but it would be great to see the team switched on for the full 80.

Phil Gould summed it up well on last night's footy show. He said when the Tigers go through the bad patches in the game, they concede too many points, the challenge is to get through the bad patches without conceding points. If they can do this he reckoned the Tigers could very well win the comp.

Even last year on their end of season winning streak they won matches on the back of 20minutes of great football and 60 minutes of average football. The day they play for 80 minutes the score line could be anything.

Older heads this year may help produce more quality football for longer periods.

Exactly what I was thinking,SC, when I read it…."kept him up all night"
I think it's Sheens who has to be worried, as 8 of out 10 tipsters picked the Roossters as well

its a bluff from brian smith. the roosters will be hard to beat. Like i said before if we beat the roosters were already halfway to beating the eels the week later.

Completely agree, Smith is very smart trying to get all the attention on the Tigers after Carney and Pearce have been in the media after a big win over the Rabbitohs. I'm surprised we're $1.60 favourites though considering how the Roosters played last week… I'm guessing the gap will close once Sunday comes around.

Majority of pundits in the DT tip the Roosters against us.

surely by definition if we don;t concede any points can it be considered a bad patch and just not a period where we don't score?

I just laughed when i read the article this morning -

Luckily we have Sheens who's just as smart.., he'll set the guys straight.
