TIGERTALK: LOTE TUQIRI
19/04/2012 1:16:46 PM
Wests Tigers winger Lote Tuqiri says that the win against the Panthers last Sunday was a huge step in the right direction.
Writing in the Campbelltown Advertiser for the Club's weekly 'TigerTalk' column, Lote explained how pleased the team were to come away with the two points as well as keeping the opposition scoreless.
LOTE'S LOT
Two competition points and keeping Penrith scoreless. It was a good feeling heading home on Sunday night.
There has been plenty said and written in recent weeks about Wests Tigers and our form. As Coach Tim Sheens said, some of it was justified. The fans may have been hurting and they pay their hard earned money to watch us play but I can assure you, no one was hurting more than us, the players.
The win over Penrith was always coming. We have worked very hard in recent weeks on our defence and that was the most pleasing part for us. The Panthers have some fine attacking players and I know they had some key players missing through injury, as did we, but it was the way the boys scrambled and dug deep in defence that was the most pleasing part.
Winning brings confidence and it is also brings expectation. It was only our second win of the season but it was a very positive one in terms of us moving forward. We know we can build on things from here. We have the bye this weekend due to rep footy so it will give the boys a chance to freshen up and get over any niggling injuries before we tackle Parramatta away on Sunday week.
The win over Penrith was also very pleasing in the fact that we overcame the loss of our hooker and captain in Robbie Farah. ‘Faffy’ is the nucleus of the team and he controls so much of what we do. I thought Tom Humble did a fine job moving from half-back to hooker to cover for Robbie.
I also want to give a massive wrap to Ray Cashmere who was very impressive in his first game back for Wests Tigers. His nick-name is ‘Razor’ and I experienced firsthand his stinging defence at training. He plays the same way he trains. Full on and leaves no stone unturned. Ray is a very experienced player and it is good to have him in our pack.
As for the rep weekend ahead, how good is it to have so many Wests Tigers players involved in these games. Benji Marshall and Adam Blair for New Zealand against the Tim Sheens coached Aussies on Friday night.
On Saturday at Penrith, the inaugural U20s Origin match will be played. Representing NSW will be half-back Jacob Miller and prop Matt Groat. I’ve been impressed with both of these boys. They are learning all the time and will be very valuable to Wests Tigers in the years ahead.
To top it off, there’s the City versus Country match in Mudgee. Pulling on the City jersey will be Robbie Farah, Chris Lawrence, Liam Fulton and the young bull himself, Aaron Woods. This will be Woodsy’s first rep jersey but I can assure you, it won’t be his last. He is one very talented young prop.
I hope you enjoy the weekend ahead. I know I will. Go the Wests Tigers.
