Tim Brasher...

super league came at the right time for Brasher as Mullins had got fullback for blues in 94 then they didnt pick SL players for 95.
Mullins was a good player but think brasher was a better fullback than Mullins also Mullins could play wing if needed better than Brasher

Similar feeling to James Tedesco for me.
Brasher was the young gun we started as an 18 year old started to make rep teams then headed off to a bigger club to continue his career.

Correct, Brasher, Morrison and O'Donnell left for the same reasons as Tedesco and Woods.

>***didnt woods wanna stay??***
and brasher never wanted to leave from what i remember he was kinda forced out in the end

What gave you that idea? He couldn’t get out of the club fast enough.

Totally incorrect. Brasher NOT int eh same category as Morrison, Odonnell or Teddy. Brasher wanted to stay.

One of the smartest x players....He basically invested all his football earnings into the property market and share market. I was told by a friend he has something like 25 places in and around Newcastle and a very large share portfolio.

Great club man, epic Origin footballer. Grew an extra leg in rep footy.

My story back during Super League, as 1997 was ending and the noise they'd re-merge the comps, the paper had a list of every club and their pros/cons for being cut from the new competition. Balmain's #1 pro was "Tim Brasher", that's how good he was and how dire the club situation was.

I agree with the folks that say Brasher isn't like Tedesco or Moses. He definitely played hard-ball with the club that year and you could reasonably forgive any footballer for trying to extend their contracts at that time - Super League had recently incited stupid spending on footballers in all quarters.

I knew the same story as @Tiger5150, he took too long to accept the offer and Balmain decided to play hardball with him.

We don't know how many warnings Brasher was given or how adamant Tigers were about not budging, but you would think after a 9-year career with Balmain, the club clearly struggling to compete and with Brasher being the clear best player in the team, they'd get over themselves and give him the deal that was on the table the day before.

Then, what, he goes to Rabbits, Cowboys, falls off a ladder dusting a fan and that's it, career over.

I met Brasher at a game some years back, nice bloke as others have said. Remember he ended up having a pretty cool post-league career as a golf caddy? He was working for Dick Smith Electronics or something as a rep when I spoke to him.

No way.
Brasher is a tigers legend.
He also played the bulk of his career and best years here.

Sorry I am wrong with this.
I didn’t realise he played almost a decade with us. ‘Sorry Balmain’ my bad.
I guess I was just disappointed he didn’t get to finish a one club player.

And he went to Souths and Cowboys who were in a right mess in the late 90s, not at all the "bigger clubs". Arguably both clubs were in a worse position than Balmain and obviously Brasher was forced to leave Souths because they were cut from the comp in 1999.

Was about to ask if he ever played a final. But he played in the 89 gf.

He most likely played in the 2 finals matches Balmain played in 1990 as well. (Not sure if the win over Newcastle at Leichhardt was a final or just an elimination game to make the finals, pretty sure it was a finals match).

Remember going to Wollongong and on that day the Steelers flogged the Tigers. My son was about six or seven and Tim Brasher was his idol. After the game my wife caught up with Tim and asked him he he would have his photo taken with my son. Having just been flogged he had every right to put his tail between his legs and scurry away but he went out of his way to make the moment memorable for a small boy. He was a class act. PS we still have the photo

I remember my uncle saw him in the little bar that used to be under the Eastern stand at Cambo after a game. Some girl went up to him and gave her his number. He responded by saying he gets hundreds of numbers. I’d probably be arrogant as well if that was me.

Remember Brasher was paid a massive amount to stay loyal to the NRL in the super league wars. Brad Fitter got a cheque for 1 million from NRL to stay loyal on top of club contract. Brasher being an Aussie rep at the time would have got around 800,000 plus Souths contract.

I am surprised at the number of posts comparing Brasher to Woods and Tedesco, they are miles apart. Brasher was made an offer and his manager elected to test his value on the market. From my memory things then began to draw out so the Tigers put a deadline on him to sign.

He let the deadline pass, and literally a minute after the deadline the tigers advised him that the offer was withdrawn. I was devastated. In hindsight I can't help but think dinosaurs put ego before the best interest of the club and the board bit their noes off to spite their face. Such a typical rugby league story.

I have an unrelated Super League story that has nothing to do with Brash.

On the night that Super LEague broke out which was either 31/03 or 01/04, my (then) wife and I were on our way to dinner with an old school friend of hers and her boyfriend who happened to be journeyman RL player Matt Munro who was playing for the Tigers at the time. On the way to their house we were listening on the radio to what was going on and who was going where etc and for how much.

Matt and I werent mates, we were close to his GF but he was a nice enough bloke and we got on well. WE didnt talk about footy much but that night I asked him how his contract negotiations were going with Balmain. He said that Balmain were being good about it and had offered him a contract but his knees were buggered and the club knew it and as a result the $$$ were low and he was thinking of retiring and going back to property valuation.

I suggested he ring this Super LEague mob and told him what had happened. He as a current 1st grader had ZERO idea what I was talking about. Long story short he ended up with a SL contract (and I dont think played any or much footy after that).

I was ***literally*** in Balmain Leagues Club with the Club President (family friend) that night. It wasnt "literally a minute".

Brashers manager was completely at fault.I was very proud of the club sticking to their principles even though i didnt want him to leave.Player managers are far to powerful and are becoming an even greater blight on the game
