Tim Sheens...I'm sorry!!!!

Ok…up till last night, I was critical of Sheens for not giving "the younger guys a go"....for the past few seasons he has had a policy of sticking to experienced players and playing them out of position to cover injuries rather than bring up a younger up and comer who is a specialist.......this year has seen Sheens relax his policy a bit an he has given the "younger guys a go"...we have seen Meaney, Waters, Dwyer, Fifita and co given a shot in FG - some have passed their test, most have failed!...which supports Tims theory of not throwing the younger players in the deep end...

Look at last nights game:

Meaney after much debate on this forum was finally given a go in First Grade...he failed..simple errors like knocking on and dropping sitters are just not acceptable in first grade games....
Dwyer after settling into a bench role and performing well, was given a starting role with more responsibility and pressure...last night he had a shocker...failed!..
Remember Nathan Water's debut earlier this year?...the only thing I remember was he knocked on at a crucial moment..it too was a sitter...failed!!
Remember the much hailed Blake Lazarus when he was given his shot in first grade earlier this year?...he had shockers and he too made simple errors by knocking on....failed... these guys maybe "stars" in an easier competition but they often can't step up to the rigors of FG,

**Yes, Tim Sheens I'm truly sorry!.....**...I bagged you in the past for not giving younger guys a go but last night proved me wrong....most simply don't make the transition, instead they make simple errors that take away momentum and deflate the side..they should be given little glimpses of first grade and if they pass a bit more exposure at a time....I'm afraid for Lazarus, Waters and now Meaney their FG careers at the WT is probably shot so best they move on elsewhere...Tim your policy of sticking to tried and proven - even out of position - is better than risking up and comers who invariably let the team down...sorry! and carn Tiges for the semis!....Mitch Brown is really in form!.stick him at FB! :sign:

Using your criteria of just looking at last nights game for Dwyer you would have to add Fifita to your list of failures

Even the best make errors. Meaneys hands were no worse than Farahs. Tough iniation but I still think Meaney is a first grader and would love to see him hang around the club

He probably will make a FG fullback, tho I think its correct in what you say. The difference between FG and 20's or state cup is MASSIVE. People on here too quickly turn youngsters into stars without them actually having played much FG.

Correct, players careers are not made after only one or two games in first grade, it will take ages couple of seasons at best.the jump is huge below first grade I hope people realize this before bagging why players aren't blooded more often. Last night was the result of injuries to many of our players and through combination if silly mistakes which is going to happen more with the younger guys. My only issue with Sheens is that he should of blooded more of these players during the year against the lesser sides one at a time at the expense of say a fitzy on the bench.

Meaney ….dropped 1 bomb a knock on and could have done better on Gordon...

Farah...brain snap on zero tackle...knocked on from dummy half
Lortay...pushed Bird (although he milked it delux) giving away a penalty in possession
Heighington...Missed Zilman badly for his try...
Benji..bomb out on the full and what was that in the first half when he kicked it dead as he was going over the touchline..
Ellis... gave away his madatory penalty in the ruck....
Dwyer... had a stinker but in his second stint he aimed up in D..

that's just off the top of my head....

Sheens has always favoured experience over youth but he is also the best in the business in bringing young players through the system...Farah, Marshall, Fulton, Gibbs, Lawrence, Ayshford, Moltzen and on and on are proof of that...

He will use that game for the youngsters like Dwyer, Mataka, Lui and Meaney as a extremely valuable tool in their development and they will be better players for it.....

Sheens nearly always uses the last round of the competition for blooding..
Last night's case was more to do with confidence building and a bit more experience for ALL the youngsters leading into "big game" matches.
