Tom Humble admits he needs to be more of an aggressive player as he tries to secure down the Wests Tigers full-back role.
Humble had a mixed night against premiers Manly at Bluetongue Stadium last Friday night in his first full match in the number 1 jersey following the season ending knee injury to outstanding young full-back James Tedesco the week before.
The former Parramatta utility back was impressive at full-back when he replaced the injured Tedesco late in the first half in the round one win over Cronulla at Leichhardt Oval.
He is hoping to get another crack at full-back when Wests Tigers travel to WIN Jubilee Oval this Friday night in round 3 of the Telstra Premiership.
“There is a long way to go but I can’t get carried away. I have just got to keep my head down,’’ Humble said.
“I’ve just got to keep working hard and try to adapt to Benji, Tim Moltzen, and Robbie Farah’s games. I’ve had limited opportunities over the last two years.
"The circumstances of how I got the starting spot are terrible but at the same time, I can’t feel sorry for anyone because that will lead to my demise.
“I’ve got to be aggressive with my opportunities. Every player knows that. I’ve got to be playing well as Joel Reddy is also fighting for a spot as well.
“There are a few other young blokes at Wests Tigers who are really good players so nothing is assured here. I have got to play well.”
A natural half-back, Humble says full-back is where he is most comfortable at for the time being.
“Full-back gives me a little bit more time and a few more opportunities. I’m still adapting to the way Wests Tigers play so I think full-back is the best spot to learn to do that,’’ he said.
“At Parramatta, I played a few games at full-back, a few games at five-eighth, a few games off the bench and one in the centres and one at hooker.
“I think in my first four games I played in four different positions. If that’s what it takes to get you (NRL) games, then so be it but at the same time, you want to lock in your own spot.”
