Mike ..... "G'day Sam. John here. How's business"?
Sam .... "Hi John. Business is good mate - real good".
Mike ... "That's terrific. Listen, the reason I was ringing. I have a customer who's desperate to get into a new F12 Berlinetta. I'm clean out of them in my yard and he doesn't want to wait the usual 6 months delivery. I thought you might be able to help me out here".
Sam ... "Yeah, possibly. Difficult to get though on short notice".
Mike ... "I know mate. I know. But look, he's prepared to pay overs. In fact he would insist on it".
Sam ... "Well, your timing is impeccable. Just so happens I'll have one here next week".
Mike ... "Terrific. I knew you could swing it. I'll get him to give you a call. Cheers mate. See you".

One week later ....
Phone rings ... "Sam's luxury car sales".
Mike .. "Sam - it's Mike. How'd you go with putting Mr. J into that new Ferrari"?
Sam ... "Good as gold, Mike, good as gold".
Mike ... "So pleased you could help. Hey listen, while I've got you. There's this young kid we're trying to get over to our club. He's fantastic and would be a great fit. But he is loyal and I think we just need to sweeten the deal a little. Do you reckon you might be interested"?
Sam ... "Could be mate, could be. What are we talking about here"?
Mike ... "Well, you know how it works. The kids been offered about the same amount by his club as we're offering, and naturally, he's keen on staying. But his agent reckons that around another $100k a season for 3 seasons would swing it".
Sam ... "Your timing is spot on Mike. Just so happens my cash flow is great now. In fact, that sale last week along with the extra that Mr J insisted I take for getting him into that Ferrari quickly would just about cover that sweetener you need. Give me the details and I'll get my legal boys onto the contract.
Mike ... "That's great Sam, just great. This kid will help us land another premiership next year. Just you watch. Oh, by the way, while I've got you. I have a client who's really keen on getting into a new Maseratti Quattro Porte. I'm clean out of them in my yard, and she doesn't want to wait for the usual 12 months. Reckon you could help here"?
Sam .. "Gee Mike ....

It doesn't/couldn't happen like this, could it?

He is a snake and I reckon leaking crap to Rothfield who is dumb enough to report it just to get the Tigers scared to pay more.

But the cars don't have to be TPA's

They are allowed 5 cars up to the total of up to $100 k under the salary cap

For all those who haven't read about the salary cap I suggest to do so , its quite easy to understand and you'll understand why I salary cap isn't a set amount and why teams can fit players under if they have the means to do so
 
If the third party deal is based upon the player playing for a particular club, then it should be included in that teams cap.

If the third part deal is available to the player regardless of who he plays for, then it should not be included.

How to differentiate? That isn't easily to develop a full proof mechanism but it is possible. But perhaps when a player is signed the NRL must be the mediator and fields the values of the contracts offered, third party sponsors should also register interest independently specify interest. If the third party sponsorship is based upon a particular team signing the player then it should be included in the cap.

If a player and club is caught breaching that then the club should pay 10x contract value in damages to each other club involved in bidding for that player, and the player should be de-registered.
 
I always understood that TPA's had to be solely organised through the player/manager and that the club was to have no part to play at all. I think we can all agree that this just isnt the case anymore.
 
So why can't we find a TPA to keep Tedesco? All I hear is that the clubs like boncos and rooters have so many TPA's in place as to why they are under the cap.

Surely, we can come up with somebody who could help out with a TPA?

Who wouldn't want to sponsor Tedesco the way he has been going this year. But TBH I think the Roosters and Broncs have more Connections in that kind of field.

100% correct - here is an excerpt on salary caps from the NRL

"What about money paid from other people or companies?

**The basic guide is that if a player is receiving money from any person as a way of inducing him to play for the club, then that money will be included in the Salary Cap.**
Income that a player earns from parties not related to his club is generally not included in the Salary Cap, however, the details of the agreement must be advised to the club by the player. "

The NRL has just turned a blind eye to the fact that players are being induced to play for a certain club by the TPAs their managers are illegally sourcing through certain clubs.
 
TPAs are going to ruin the game if the NRL doesn't come up with some way of controlling them. I sent this off to the NRL the other day -

I would like to know why the NRL in general and the salary cap auditor in particular are not following their own guidelines in policing the salary cap and TPAs in particular. Your own guidelines state -

""What about money paid from other people or companies?

The basic guide is that if a player is receiving money from any person as a way of inducing him to play for the club, then that money will be included in the Salary Cap."

It is quite obvious that TPAs are being paid to players to induce them to play for certain clubs and that these amounts are not being claimed under the cap.The NRL doesn't even appear to show any interest in to investigating these under the table deals. You continually sprout the same line that the salary cap creates a level playing field yet some sides are stockpiling the cream of the competition through the use of TPAs. Fans are becoming increasingly disgruntled with the inaction of the NRL to police their own policies. You only have to look at fan forums as evidence of this unrest. This unrest will grow in to fans leaving the NRL if they continue to see certain clubs prospering because of NRL inaction while their own club falls further behind.

Ideally we would. I said about 2-3 years ago the club needed to get in a position to have as many third party sponsors as possible. It is what clubs like the Broncos have done for years.

We should get ANZ stadium to make Robbie, Luke Brooks and James Tedesco ambassadors of the stadium, like the Dogs do.

We should be ringing foxtel and nine and getting them regular paying gigs on the Footy Show etc..

The above would happen if they were at the Roosters and the Dogs.

The next sponsors that contact the club should be told give your money to player X, he will turn up to 3-4 functions a year and we will sort out corporate tickets for your company. The Broncos and others do that. Do that enough and you will keep all your best players making it more attractive for other players.

The above doesn't solve the fundamental flaws with the Salary Cap but it is how to build an elite squad.

100 % agree. Couldn't have put it any better myself. I am writing something similar to send to select journalists, the NRL and Grant Mayer. Does anyone have Grant Mayers email address?
 
Melbourne and Canterbury were caught carrying out similar illegal shonky deals to entice players away from clubs. In due time these teams were heavily punished. Roosters have been pushing the envelope too far for too long. But will NRL investigate and punish them?
 
Good post diedpretty, completely agree BUT:

it is extremely hard to prove this in a legal sense. These are big corporations and aren't going to be very happy about being accused for salary cap fraud (or whatever the term is). If the NRL comes out but has little to no evidence they will look beyond sillly.

that's one of the problems with dealing with this stuff.

but to the NRL's credit, they have dealt well with breaches in the past such as storm and dogs. Also many clubs were fined last year although that was more about improper registration of deals and other admin stuff.
 
I think another thing the club has to do is to select and nurture a relationship with a sports journalist a few even. It doesnt even have to be powerhouse outlets, they will all follow suit to seem to be on the pulse, and we can feed our own press monster.

It sounds stupid but it is an integral cog in the sponsorship machine… Stories are accompanied by pictures alot of the time, the more exposure we can give to sponsors the more attractive we are.

If you think about this current Tedesco situation, it was a speculator/ non-specific tweet from the Bulldogs, a nothing really, a whisper whipped up into a cyclone. It did Ayoubs work for him, now the germ is working us over again through the media, its a carbon copy of how he worked us over for Robbies contract.

We have been losing the media battles forever, time to turn that around too.
