Transfer Fees

Why do ESL clubs expect NRL clubs to pay transfer fees when they dont pay them?

Tom Briscoe is looking at coming to the NRL next season but is contracted to Hull until the end of 2013, they want a transfer fee for him. At the same time they are confident they will sign Gareth Ellis who is also contracted till the end of 2013 but no fee is expected.

i would say because the clubs are happy to let them go so they can ease salary cap concerns for under performing players.

england needs all the players they can get.

You answered your own question.

Transfer fees are compensation for allowing a player to leave before his contract expires.

Bunnies paid transfer fee for Sam that went onto cap

You sure about that? I remember a stink being made because of the outrageous transfer fee that Rusty paid yet didn't come out of Bunnies cap.

Where is our Transfer fee for Ellis :unamused:

i think you are missing the point of why we don't ask for a fee.
nrl clubs love being able to release players they no longer want that are still under contract without having to pay part of their contract, especially players that had backloaded deals.

every nrl club has enjoyed being able to shift players they no longer wanted to upgrade their squad, without incurring dead salary cap payments.

england on the other hand, relies on imports to fill their squads.
take away a home grown boy,and that effects them even worse, because of the lack of home grown talent.
i don't follow sl,but last i knew they could only have a set number of imports.
if this is still the case, then finding a local to replace a top shelf player is alot harder if you are at your limit of imports.

the nrl has cried foul before about losing players to sl,but the reality is they have been able to usher players overseas for their own gain.

ellis is an exception to the rule.

100% correct, it is beneficial to both the NRL and ESL clubs. But I think in the NRL, due to no draft, transfer fees should apply for players that come through a teams system and are wanted by the same club, but are poached by another club. A royalty should be payed and included in the cap.
