'Tribal Chief' Roach works with forwards
Story: Wayne Cousins, Video: AJ Carr

Friday 1 February 2013 4:37 PM

Several Wests Tigers forwards were today given some valuable advice from the Club’s latest recruit in former Balmain Tigers legend Steve Roach.

The ex NSW and Australian Test prop has joined Wests Tigers in a Club Ambassador role. One of his roles is the establishment of ‘The Tribe’ – a new corporate group giving people the chance to get an inside view of how the Club runs and puts them in the shoes of the Wests Tigers players.

Limited to 17 Members only, The Tribe will be run by ‘Tribal Chief’ Roach and his former Tigers team-mate in Paul Sironen, the Club’s NYC Football Operations Manager.

In between his ‘Tribe’ work, Roach spent the morning passing on some of the finer techniques of playing in the front row at the invite of NRL Head Coach Mick Potter.

“Playing in the front row or in the middle is the easiest job to explain but the hardest one to do,’’ Roach said.

“It’s about getting over the opposition and about trying to be the best you can.

“It is no good just putting on the jumper and going through the motions and making up the numbers. You have got to try and make a statement.”

Is it just me, or does anyone hate Roach getting involved with the club training after he attacked Robbie about Origin? Surely there are better options.

:sign: How good is it that we tap into the history of the Wests Tigers founding clubs and get the best for the team. Roach was used at Origin level but Sheens thought better than use him. I look forward to extra aggression from our forwards this year as long as they don't pat he refs head we will see Blocker improve our team.

Lets get some old magpies legends involved and truly become a united club. Tommy would be great ! :sign:

I think its a 'one off' re coaching- hes involved in corp membership….its PR nothing more....ex fan favourite now with the boys that so that sorta thing - gets people in ....wooo hoooo

Lets hope Blocker doesn't see it fit to show our forwards how to tap referees on the head

Blocker heart is in the right place , but the game has changed a lot since Blocker retired If he can give our forwards some aggressive intent without going over the top that would very useful

I think the Blocker we see in the media is a very different one to what we'd see on the training paddock. IMO Blocker was one of the best props to play the game and any advice he could pass on to the forwards should be welcomed. The way the side defended last year was nothing short of abysmal, I sincerely doubt he could make things any worse than what they were last year.

Heart and spirit never changes. Its why old boys get a chance to speak during Origin camps.

looking at the photo with roach and our forward pack i think we are in trouble this year again, there appears to be no size at all. My biggest fear all along was our lack of size in the back row, how can we hope to break the line with small backrowers. I hope to two boys with the hard to say names stand up or we will get pumped.

Don't worry BP, Roach is so enormous and bloated these days, he would even make Arnold Schwarzenegger look tiny standing alongside him! I think there's enough size there to start with. That said, losing 2 props to long term injury before the season even begins is probably not something we could've afforded.

Love how Roach says on the video that there's none better out of dummy half than Robbie Farah! Funny how things change :unamused:

I never knew Alistair Overeem posted on here….I saw Steve play his first game for the Balmain under 23's and he looked like a giant compared to most of the other players on the field. He was already very heavily built even at that age and always played the game tough. He never changed his style and before too long was wearing the green and gold for Australia.

Our backrow is an improvement on last seasons.

Ellis was an utter champ but as his season opener in ESL proved injuries tend to come in runs when players get to a certain age.

Blair will be better.

Pettybourne & Thompson are both shrewd buys and then you have a host of last years Grand Finalists in the lower grades along with Spence who is a excellent backrower/prop hampered by injury last season and looking bigger and fitter then ever this season.

Bell is quality

Fulton is a machine and adaptable to fill other roles if required

Anasta is the great unknown in many ways but he is a hefty human being, a pro and a competitor who added a lot when playing in the Roosters back row.

As such I am optimistic

Blocker was an absolute champion player, tough as nails and a leader of men who would make his teammates walk a hell of a lot taller when he was beside them.
His outspoken views on Farah at Origin last year put him offside with many WT supporters but there is absolutely no doubt that he loves WT with a passion and to have people like that involved with the club can only be a good thing IMO.

On a side note I am pretty sure that Blockers original nickname was "Chief" because he looks like the big American Indian guy in the movie One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest….so he would definately love being called the Tribal Chief.

Put some fire and passion in their guts Blocker!

He was very good in 2010 as a Backrower… I dont take it lightly what he bought to that team as an alternative to the main playmakers.

I'm thinking he will SHINE in our pack drifting through the ruck. This will also allow Robbie to play more direct, where he is most dangerous!

That's what we thought last year!

I remain hopeful, but worry our backrow lacks size and mongrel. I think Anasta will add a lot to the side, but I'm not sure hard yards and 40 tackles is his go. I've seen a fair bit of Bodene, and he don't impressa me much. I have no confidence in Blair pulling his thumb out . A couple of injuries could see the cupboard looking bare.

But, who knows…. I remember when supporters used to groan when Gibbs came off the bench. Let's see who can step up.

Blocker got his nickname when he play with balmain coppers . They used to call him BLOCKHEAD ,CAUSE HE HAD NO FEAR AND WOULD TAKE THE OPPOSITION onall by himself .it was then abbrieviated to blocker and block as the years went on .

Hey, 1/4 chicken….Why did you quote my post? I never mentioned the word Blocker or whatever you want to call him. On a side note The Chief played for Newcastle....The same as The Axe played for Eastern Suburbs not Brisbane, Cement played for Western Suburbs and Stopper played for Balmain.

He quoted F2B's post who happened to quote you quin…..

Looks like I was right:

Thanks Inko, I'm still as hopeless as ever on computers….Sorry about that 1/4 chicken. I will often spend about 15 minutes trying to separate the quotes....lol....
