I could never understand the whole Toovey thing… But you have to wonder if Johns didn't play in the 1995 World Cup, what his stats would actually look like. At the end of the day, he wouldn't of played Origin in 95 or made the touring party if the Super League players weren't snubbed.
Was he injured in 96 & 97? I know he played a star performance in the 97 Grand Final, but didn't play Rep footy for 2 years???
Watto - there was no Test footy in 1996 due to the War (so that remains a blank page for Johns, Fittler, Renouf, Langer etc)! In 1997 it was a SuperLeague Australian team - so Joey & Freddy were again precluded!!
(Makes you wonder how many more games/achievements that Fittler could have achieved in his already long & illustrious rep career!?)
As regards to Joey not making the 95 NSW team - Elias was the incumbent hooker to 1994 and retired so NSW needed a new no. 9! McCormack & Priddis were the next men in the frame but both signed with the SL via Mariners & Canberra respectively!!
Toovey on the other hand was not an incumbent NSW half prior to 95 (he played one game off the bench previously in 1990) - and he was playing primarily at dummy-half for Manly. He should have got the hooker slot - while with Sticky/Brandy/(and even Polla-Mounter) missing out due to SL - Johns was the obvious replacement at 7!
Fulton & Arko instead made sure their boy got the 7 to reduce his workload!!
Despite Johns retaining his NSW spot between 1995 & 2000 (until injury) - because he was not wearing the 7 - the simpleton media commentators were unable to equate the NSW performance(s) with the direction he provided! (Also Fittler remained the dominant play-maker in both teams between 1995 and 2003)! Later - they over-stated Joey's influence & tried to make him a legend before his time!!
From a NSW-man's perspective - I still believe Mal Meninga, Brad Fittler, Darren Lockyer, Glen Lazarus & even Brett Kenny deserve to be the next Immortals well ahead of Joey!!!
