Tyre chains

A friend of mine and some of her friends are heading to the snow for a few days soon.

Im unsure myself but want to ask about tyre chains for cars, have had a look online and can see they seem to be fairly simple to attach or get someone to attach, exactly when are these required and what is the go down there, can you hire them or what?

She is not the most confident of drivers to start with, I'm always worried in the car with her and worried about this too

I imagine if youre car is lowered there may be a problem also?
Hers isnt but mine is but just wondering

If you're going to be coming through Cooma during business hours stop at inski (on your left as you're coming in to Cooma) and get them there. Get them to show you how to put them on and practice it yourself while you're there. Otherwise you might find yourself on a really steep learning curve on the side of the road in the dark while it's snowing. (torches do help at that time). They're not difficult to put on though. Diamond pattern are preferable to ladder pattern.

There's plenty of other places to hire them in Cooma just in case but inski's easy. You can also hire them in jindabyne but there are time when you need them before you get to Jindy. Size obviously depends on tyre size and clearance is important but you should be fine. You put them on if there's uncleared snow on the road although normally if it gets to that the rta will put signs up telling you to.

Cheers softlaw.
Am I right in saying that you dont need to jack up the car to fix them>?
My friend is not what I'd call very mecanically minded….Ive showed her how to change a tyre but theory and practice two very different things

Hahahaha Oh, Ink, I just spat my drink everywhere!

I've watched hubby put the tyre chains on and I reckon I could do it, if he wasn't there. Inski is where we hired ours from years ago, too.

The only tip I can give you is KNOW your tyre size. Weird story.

I went to the snow with a couple and we both stopped at cooma, and they guys we hired snow chains off were rather surly.

They asked us both (both being the blokes) what size out tyres are.

My mate just stared back blankly. They weren't thoroughly impressed, and weren't very helpful for him.

I had just recently researched and bought a set of mags and alloys for my then owned commodore, and was able to reply back smugly 225, 50's in 16's. (more luck and timing than anything)

The surliness went away with me, and after a small chat about how good the mags were, he was actually very helpful in helping me get them on (I was bloody hopeless at doing it)

Weird I know.

Yes good idea UD I will give her the tip.

We once went to the cop shop to report a minor accident and the cop asked her for the rego no.
She didnt know
(I recalled the first two letters and she was able to fill in the blanks after that)
