DEFENCE A CONCERN FOR TODD PAYTEN IN BIG WIN

His team may have scored 50 points in their first win of the season but Wests Tigers Head Coach Todd Payten is more concerned with the 22 points leaked in.
Wests Tigers recorded an impressive 50-22 win over Manly at Bluetongue Stadium tonight to pick up their first competition points in the NYC.
Payten was pleased with the performance after watching his side throw away victory against Cronulla in round one.
“We did some good things, we did some silly things. It was a vast improvement from last week and the things we wanted to sharpen up we got a little bit better at,’’ Payten said.
“I thought both edges were pretty good in attack. We made a few decisions where we went for the big plays instead of grinding our way in games. That’s what happens when the score is like that. You get excited and you want to score points.”
Payten said he spoke to his players at half-time about not easing up after leading 22-10 at the break.
“The boys were pretty aware of what we did last week. The first set after half-time didn’t make me feel much better but we put two tries in 5 minutes so that was pleasing,’’ Payten added.
“I am more concerned though about our defence. I know we have points in us. We just need to turn up for one another in defence and work hard for your team-mate.
“Last week we were not working hard enough to get onside which didn’t allow us to get good line speed and we were much better in that area tonight.”
Payten nominated hooker Ben Saunders, second-rower Joel Luani, prop Nathan Brown and half-back Jacob Miller as his best players.
