There is still a fair bit of bitching if you like between old Balmain & Wests supporters over a number of issues. Is the solution as easy as playing strip?
If you fit into the category of not really deep down being able to let go and are not yet being fully commited to the Wests Tigers could the change of jersey finally change your views? ie back to the 80's style.(with no changes every 3 years. I am a bit envious of seeing Souths,Easts & Saints in traditional jerseys.)
Balmain V
Wests V
Third jersey can change maybe predominately white for early season games and can change to make extra $$$
To be honest for me it would be great seeing the old jerseys again on a regular basis.
Is it that simple?

That is I am sorry to say a poor idea. Firstly it means the split between old time clubs that don't even exist anymore is made more obvious and confusing for kids who have never heard or cared for them and for the rest who have moved on. Also it would cost a club already struggling for money significant amounts which means we would perform worse on the field . Glad your thinking outside square but that is a bad one

Even if our logo was a White Bengal tiger (i.e. Wests colours, Balmain animal) and we played with a stripped black and white jersey, I doubt things would change much.

The 2005 premiership should have united fans, but it didn't.

I don't know why.

I've embraced the merged entity. Didn't really get excited by Balmain playing in the NSW Cup GF. They are not my club anymore. Wests Tigers is my team. Established 2000\. 1908-1999 is ancient history and completely irrelevant to me now.

Dragons play half st.george strip half steelers strip.. I bet This forum will be filled up with for and against. We have 200+ years of combined history in a new modern team. Lets embrace it wherever possible.

Did WT in 2008-2010 playing season in half black and half orange confuse people ( of any age) or reduce tigers branding?

Yes I understand it may cost the club $$$ not changing every few years but the kids wouldn't know the difference & I think it may actually build the brand where our jerseys would be instantly recognisable where as now if you look at our alternative strip it hardly speaks out that it is Wests Tigers. If you look around the grounds the amount of people wearing philips or Victa jerseys is high. It might entice a few to purchase a Wests Tigers jersey. All the AFL clubs have maintained there major strips and I think it is one of their strengths.Point taken though.

Agreed. Hoped Balmain won on GF day, but screamed all game for our Toyota Cup boys. We're Wests Tigers now.

This thread was mainly aimed at the people that are not as passionate as they once were with their old clubs or those that are still a little bitter about the merger to see if a change of jersey back to a closer alignment to the past may make them a little more inclined to warm to the club- not those that have already embraced the Joint venture

Like I said, if 2005 didn't bring fans together NOTHING will. Any old fans who haven't embraced or warmed to the merger after 13 years won't do so now. No matter what happens. And guess what, we don't need them! It's well beyond time people moved on from Wests and Balmain.

Yeah I'm hearing ya Juddy … Take the Victa jersey and the Phillips jersey and cut them vertically down the middle, you know with a boners knife ... Sew half of the Wests jersey to the other half of the Balmain jersey ... Slap the growling tiger on the breast, the magpie on the sleeve ... And it would be such an ugly look, absolutely everyone would want one.

Ps ...Of course the old sponsors would need to be removed first... VICLIPS or PHILTA ... mean very little to footy fans beyond the lush confines of the Ukraine.

These people don't realise how lucky they are. At least they have a club - one that they have some attachment to and on which they can follow. I followed Newtown for 20 years until they were kickd out of 1st grade. It was then that I had decide which other club I was more closely a;oghned to I chose Balmain which joined with WEsts yo form WEsts Tigers and I haven't looked back since.

coming from newcastle we just watched the jets win my eldest ask"dad why don't we follow the knights " my reply " cause their not the wests tigers son" its as simple as that support the tigers as one

As an old maggie I have no problem in saying go tigers … I looked upon the merge as a chance to support a team with a half stake in the main competition ! To me , you either accepted the merge and supported the Wests Tigers or you stayed loyal to balmain or wests. I assume people on this forum support a team called the WESTS TIGERS...12 years people!!!

So changing something that affects the majority to appease a small minority?

Imo its a step backward and a poor idea

We are a franchise, making money is more important than history or tradition to WTs.

I was a magpie but as of 2000 I'm a wests tiger, just imagine if balmain went with parra and magpies went with the bulldogs, both entertidy's would be dead. So leers all get together and move on for shit sake, as I'm hearing record membership sales do far
TIGERS FOREVER

I always hate the division that exists amongst wests tigers fans. I was born a bears fan. I was a bears fan for the first seventeen years of my life and then the bears were unceremoniously booted from the competition at the end if 1999\. I hated the game for a couple if years before my mates finally brainwashed me and I ended up a wests tigers fan.

I don't care if the central coast bears ever exist because I did get brainwashed and there's no turning back. I own nine wests tigers jerseys. I've been a member for six years now. I even have a wests tigers tattoo.

My bottom line is, even though I'm a refugee and neutral to the whole wests and balmain thing, it's been twelve years now. Wests Tigers are a great club, forget about old loyalties.

From 2013, we are one in all major grades.

Embrace the merger. After all, we were the first joint venture to win the comp.

People are valid with their "its been 12 years" comments. What WT fans should appreciate is that there are generations of fans that supported wests and balmain for decades that are still alive today (most fans from 25yo up) who follow WT for that reason. Yes WT is a NEW club but it also has 200 years of combined history, play at 2 suburban grounds for a reason and WT exists as a legacy of Wests & Balmain. Yes heritage rounds can help celebrate the past but can people really say that WT has less historical significance than Melbourne Storm? I don't think so.

There is no harm in having - 'balmain inspired' strip and a 'wests inspired' strip as a home and away jersey. The colours allow us to do it its all about the design. Dragons do it well so why cant WT?

This forum (and many other online platforms) are filled with WT fans who are old wests diehards "wanting a fair go" when it comes to identifying and recognising the wests branding in WT (and not just a re-incarnation of Balmain) - you would be surprised how happy those fans would be if there was some more 'wests branding' - simple to achieve in a jersey design.. Something to balance the dominant 'tigers branding' not overtake it or reduce it.

Being aligned to your old club does not make you any less of a WT fan, member or any less passionate or counter-productive.

It's as simple as a fan making their own choice to either support the merger and look foward OR support the merger whilst holding onto the past. For me the past is not forgotten, it never will. However i respect the fact that Balmain and Wests are history but their interests should rightly hold little weight in any decision Wests Tigers make. This is only my view, others may disagree, but for me all decisions this club make need to be for the betterment of Wests Tigers.

Forget Balmain, forget Wests. Why should any decision Wests Tigers make have to be made for the betterment of them. This is why i fully support a WT's state cup team. I refuse to look at it from either feeder clubs perspective. Their place is their history and it should rightly remain that way. Look at it from a child's perspective. Any child 13 or under would have almost zero recognition for Balmain or Wests. In the same way i have zero recognition of Glebe or Annandale. They're simply part of our history and we embrace it fully but it can never be at the forefront of any decision making this club makes for the future. Never!

I can understand the stance back in the initial years of 2000-05 perhaps. Back then we did respect the place of Balmain and Wests a lot more but next season is 2013\. That'll be 14 season as Wests Tigers. The time to move on is here. I may've grown up as a Balmain fan but now the flame that burns for Balmain flickers so weakly. It really is time to move on. I'm all for heritage strips, i think they are great! But even me at 32 years old, growing up as a Balmain fan, i'm sick of hearing arguments about Balmain V Wests. It's time to move on. Like i said though, this is my opinion, i don't expect everyone to agree and i'm not necessarily right.
