Disappointed he did not stick to it ..you have to be willing to give it 2 or 3 yrs . I watch a lot of NFL and I think he could of given it a real go , can not expect to be a blow in and be taken seriously . One day a young kid will give it a real shot !

That's what I mean by delusional, he thinks he can roll up and learn a game that he didn't grow up playing in a few months and get a spot on a team in one of the most cut throat competitive sports in the world.
Was a million to one!!!

Funny when I offered anyone who thought he'd make it to put their money where their mouth is they all went quiet.

I disagree, these guys arent far off cracking it. It will only take one to open up the floodgates.

NRL can not compete with NFL, they will come knocking sooner than later.

All it takes is a coach willing to take a chance. our guys, well some of them are very suited to the game.

@TIGER If he was willing to put a couple of seasons in I would of taken your money ... you just can not blowin and expect a start and the NFL teams have to know your serious .... there are quite a few Aussies on rosters , when I watched the Jets game the other night if Holmes could not get a start next season I am a bad judge some of those players were plodders of the NFL .

@The_Patriot I think you're right that one of our NRL players will step up and play NFL but it will be a rarity. Their college system generates so many players that it will only bean exceptional NRL player who steps up to play NFL defensively or offensively (i.e excluding kickers).
I think it's more likely that one of our top cricketers could play MBL. The games are reasonably similar. I remember back in the 1960s the NY Yankees offered a contract to one of our Test players, a guy called Norm O'Neil. Don't know why he didn't have a shot but it was apparently a serious offer.

I don't agree because I believe fundamentally the games are too different.

League and Union are the most alike and even then most players would struggle to make the transition from elite level of one code to elite at the other.

Granted for NFL, you don't need to be elite to earn a pretty penny. However, NFL is no more like League than AFL is, and similarly suits different athletic experience and body types. You get a guy like Holmes who has been training in elite League for 10 years, then tries to shift to a radically different form of sport.

If it's purely athleticism you are after, there's no particular reason why AFL could not have been raiding rugby league stocks for decades, and they had one half-go at it, for a miserable failure.

Some might make it in NFL, but so far the only ones to make it are punters, simply because they only have to learn to kick Dukes rather than Sherrins.

I just don't think league boys can compete with the 3-5 million American kids who grow up playing football every year, to then fill less than 2000 pro NFL roster spots.

look at how many americans have come here and tried to make it professional...not many....

What a shock, he's heading back to the NRL.

Did he really think he was going to make the NFL? If he did, he's delusional

My thoughts on Holmes having a try with the NFL was, no I never thought he would he would make it. BUT the fact he had a go has to be admired whether it worked out or not. It is like anything in life you will only win or succeed if you give it ago, so good on Holmes for having a shot I admire people who put a bit of skin on the line in life.

Coivtny and Jirskyr i dont so much as disagree with you just see it a different way.

NFL at its best is about using someones specific talent and designing plays around that. At this point in time League players are being asked to conform to their long held patterns and structures.

Pete Carroll the Seahawaks coach only just recently revolutionesed the defensive approach to the game by modelling his tackling technique on Rugby.

Im telling you at some point a coach will tap in to what these elite league players can offer and the floodgates will open.

The proposed New York team in the English Super League will end up doing more than both Jarryd and Val .

Val dissapointed me because i really believed he could transition. I havent ruled it out yet as he want to stick out the season. Given how trash the Jets are i wouldnt be surprised to see him activated the last few games. if he is good luck Cowboys because he will be inclined to stay.

Guys like Hayne who in the NFL are really just a change of pace Running back are a dime a dozen. Guys with 4.3/4.4 speed who have great hands and are mobile and can beat a man one on one however are something that can overcome a lack of experience.

Holmes has a chance in this league.

The great untapped is really our best defensive players. really good defensive outside backs or very mobile back rowers can transition to positions like Safety, defensive positions or special teams defensive positions.

Serious? Delusional?
Better to never tried & failed than not have a crack at all

Would you say that if Aaron Woods decided to have a crack?
Or would you call him delusional?

Stupid analogy & Probably a different story... Woods probably wouldn't get a look in... But how's Woods relevant? were talking about vh

Maybe a NFL thread for those interested in that type of thing instead of infiltrating RL threads.

Lol calm down. Its a thread of Val Holmes leaving the NFL. Its for lack of definition an NFL thread.

Maybe choose your threads a little better dude.

@The_Patriot a decent safety would be a fair swap for doesntmatterson....how’s Adams going this year. Not watching much myself

I'm not as savvy as some NFL bodies on here , but I think it would take many NFL players a long time (2-3 years ) to come to terms with the obvious massive workrate increase needed

My opinion the players that would adapt to league best would be tight ends and your strong / free safety's

I will if it says NFL on the thread name otherwise you have to put up with it.

It also in turning into who could or who didn't make it in the NFL.

If he really wanted to make it he would still be there in the system learning the game and getting experience, then giving it another crack, the fact that at the first hurdle he's looking for his safety net of the NRL tells me he's not serious and never was.
If he thinks he's good enough and is seriously wanting to play NFL, why give up so easily?

@TIGER Maybe it was just a scam to get out of his last contract with Sharks. Did he break that contract, or "get released early"?

You said in response to me calling Holmes "delusional"
Better to have tried and failed than to not have a crack at all.

So i'm asking if you'd say the same thing about anybody, Woods was just a random name, it could be anyone, or is it not delusional only if it's Val Holmes having a crack?

Would you call Woods delusional if he had a crack at NFL? I assume you would

So does "better to have tried and failed than to not have a crack at all"
only apply to some people?
