Waerea-Hargreaves backs Dwyer

WESTS Tigers back-rower Simon Dwyer will today come under scrutiny for his controversial hit on Jared Waerea-Hargreaves - and he has received some unlikely support in the form of the man who was knocked out by his challenge.

Despite claims the tackle should have been penalised, which would likely have won the match for the Roosters before the epic encounter went into golden-point extra time, Waerea-Hargreaves described it simply as a ''good hit''.

Waerea-Hargreaves needed 10 staples in his chin from an earlier incident, not the 80th-minute Dwyer hit. The back-rower was concussed by Dwyer's contact, and played no further role in the game.

He later said the tackle was legal. ''I was filthy when they took me off but they said, 'You couldn't even hold a sentence together','' Waerea-Hargreaves said yesterday. ''I thought it was a clean, legit tackle. Hats off to him - he got me a beauty.

''All my roommates were telling me, 'That's the biggest hit of the year'. I was going, 'Don't tell me that'.''

Still, the NRL match review committee will scrutinise the tackle, which led to the scrum which the Roosters won against the head in the dying seconds of regulation time. There have been suggestions Dwyer could be handed a grade-two high-tackle charge, which could add to the Tigers' list of unavailable players.

Second-rower Gareth Ellis also faces a suspension after being placed on report for a high tackle on Roosters five-eighth Todd Carney.

The Dwyer hit, though, is likely to be of most interest. It might place the NRL in a precarious position, too. If the match review committee sees fit to charge him, the referees group will be further embarrassed - video referee Steve Clark ruled for a scrum despite reviewing replays of the incident.

Dwyer's shoulder appeared to make contact with Waerea-Hargreaves's chin, although there were claims the Roosters player was falling. While not even a grade-two would automatically lead to a suspension, that the tackle was serious enough to be awarded a grading will be proof that Dwyer should have been penalised - giving the Roosters a win they subsequently claimed anyway, but without the fatigue of a 20-minute period of extra time.

That extra match time could hamper both teams, who will both have to back up this weekend.

The Tigers have been pitted against the in-form Raiders in Canberra on Friday night, while the Roosters will play Penrith on Saturday at the SFS.

That's pretty decent of him (JWH) to be honest. Outside of football he's an alright guy, he just seems to flick a switch every time he gets on the field and become some hectic nutcase.

Hopefully Dywer and Ellis escape suspension, we're going to need everyone against Canberra's monster pack.

Hargreaves has always been a very nice guy.

Absolutely nothing wrong with the way he plays. Agression is awesome unless you're a little dimwit like Ennis.

Hopefully Dwyer isn't cited for what was one of the best hits of the season. And if he is, hopefully Hargreaves gives evidence for him, applauding what a great shot it was.

I honestly thought JWH was a massive pest all game. But you can't underestimate how decent it was of him to come out and say this.

Good on him!

I said it before, when he got hit, he stood up smiling at Dwyer and that's when I started liking him. Didn't he take a hit from Gibbs as well??

Went to school with JWH, always a nice bloke, but don't get him angry.

For those who want to see the hit again:

Maybe Iam old and Cynical, but a lot easier to make these calls when you have won, but in saying that he didnt have to say anything. Anyway happy ending, no charge and free to fight another battle

I was impressed earlier this year when the SMH did their player's poll. When they asked who the hardest player was, the consesus was Gallen or Petero, but JWH for Benji. Made me think maybe there was more to him that met the eye.

"Gibbs " ??? He was a tackling Machine .. Who didnt he tackle …. Poor bugger was too tired and fell when SKD stepped past him to get that match winning try .. If Gibbs wasnt tired he would have stopped SKD in his tracks.

On JWH , if he did say what the article reports than he has won my respect even though he is not a Tiger..

….and he goes to get up as soon as possible after the biggest hit of the year, eventually up after 10 or 20 seconds
Some that like to lie down and take a dive have no self respect, would still be down
JWH plays the game the way its supposed to be played

I have never really taken any notice of Birds game but watching his past two games I cant get over how much of an actor he is. He did the same thing last week and got up and gave a wink to his teammates.
If I held any respect it would have been lost right there

I don't think he'll beat the "trip over own team mate" routine in Rd 26 that pulled him another penalty. Absolute grub.

JWH on the other hand seems a fair sport. Plays hard and cops hard. Spent a fair bit of the game interfering with the ruck looking for a fight but got penalised properly for it, not quite that despicable sneaking around, hands on the footy rubbish the Storm players do.
