Wayne Bennett will finish up as Rabbitohs coach at the end of next season, with Souths locking in a succession plan that will see his senior assistant coach, Jason Demetriou, take over in 2022 according to an exclusive report in the Sydney Morning Herald.

The Herald reports that Demetriou has just signed a new four-year deal with the Rabbitohs, with the contract stipulating that he will continue in his role as Bennett's right-hand man for the next two seasons before taking over as head coach in 2022 and 2023. According to the report, the deal also includes a one-year option for the Rabbitohs to keep.

While Demetriou's first crack at a head coaching role is assured by the deal, which has reportedly been rubber stamped by Bennett, it is not yet clear what the future holds for the seven-time premiership mentor. According to the report, Bennett, who will be 72 by the time Demetriou coaches the Rabbitohs in an NRL game, may move into a head of football role, either at Souths or with another club.

Retirement or a head coaching role with a different club are the other obvious options.

Demetriou was short-listed to succeed Bennett at Brisbane when the Broncos board decided decided back in 2018 that it was time for a new coach but he was overlooked for then-Souths coach Anthony Seibold.
