We can still win without Tedesco: Wests Tigers

By Chris Kennedy ‌, National Correspondent , NRL.com

Wests Tigers can still make a run at the 2016 finals despite a crucial loss to fellow contenders Gold Coast and the likely loss of fullback James Tedesco for the rest of the regular season, according to coach Jason Taylor.

The in-form Campbelltown junior was taken from the field in the 60th minute with blood streaming from his mouth after copping a swinging arm to the jaw from Ryan James and immediately rushed to hospital for scans with initial fears he had suffered a broken jaw.

That would put him out for at least the rest of the regular season meaning the now 10th-placed Tigers will have to win two or potentially all three of their remaining games without him just to book a spot in the bottom half of the eight.

"It doesn't look good…. He'll obviously have to have scans," Taylor said of the early prognosis following the last-gasp 19-18 loss at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

"We don't know there's no Tedesco yet but it does look that way. But absolutely [we can make the finals without him]."

Taylor pointed to the efforts of the team in the final 20 minutes to score two tries and level up despite Tedesco's absence.

"We were still well behind when James went off. The guys really rallied so there's no reason the guys can't do that. Jordan Rankin was superb [filling in at fullback].

"The confidence is still high. We've got to dust ourselves off and get on with it."

In a piece of brighter news Taylor was expecting halfback Luke Brooks to be available for next Friday's must-win match against the Panthers.

"Brooksy's looking good, he's done a few training session this week. He'll need to do a couple more. He's looking promising for Friday night," Taylor said.

The nrl and Todd iceberg need to take a new look at how talented players like Teddy should be protected more, the amount of times he has been tackled high this year is sickening and the refs rarely pick it up. Another bug bear is that in this instance it looks to be the case that Tedesco gets whacked possible broken jaw and is lost for the game yet the offender, James gets to play on b.s.

Agree , it's total crap .
What ever happened to the send off rule ??

At the start of the season Tedesco was our best player by a mile. He really stood out, after Origin for whatever reason he has not been as dominate. So yes I believe we can win without him, the players believe in themselves now which is important.

I wish him a speedy recovery.

Exactly or at least sin bin so the team offended against gets some immediate redress.

It has been confirmed that Teddys jaw has a fracture according to club website, hope that is the season for James and as for Teddy, all the best for a speedy recovery as painless as possible.

We are done no Brooks no Teddy, =no attack it's 2009 again the injuries are going to finish us off sadly,

Brooks will be back next week.

I thought he was gonna be out for 5 weeks? well that would help… but Teddy is such a great support player and great under the high ball I just don't see us makking the 8 now its a massive loss, at leats warriors got flogged it means we still kinda control our own destiny because we play panthers too.

this thread reminds me of that Monty Python sketch how he kept fighting without his arms , legs etc…

Of course we can win without Robbie, ditto for James Tedesco, ditto for Moses

Of course they can…

I just saw that the Dragons as crap as they are beat the Comp leaders...

This Wests Tigers Team has heart...

If we were good enough we would be there. And if we are good enough we will still get there. It's not injuries that are killing us. Have a look at the for and against, that usually gives you a good indication of where you're at as a team. We may have only had one bad touch up, but it was a bloody big one, and it's come back to bite us now

But can we win with 4/4 of our starting spine in doubt
Brooks will need to have an absolute blinder… when was the last time that happened

I didn't know 4/4 were in doubt? Either way, if you leave your run this late and have to hope other teams lose etc then it makes it tough. It's not like at the start of the year you don't know you're going to need 28 points minimum.
We are kind of lucky we get to play teams ( bar the Raiders) that are going for the same position

Ryan James wasnt put on report for his high shot on Teddy

He was penalised for being offside in the kick chase

I think that if we play to the very best of our ability we have a chance to win three games and make the eight. However, I don't like our chances. Tedesco provides our x factor in attack and is an inspiration to the rest of the team with his heavy involvement and wholehearted effort.

Regarding the high shot and injury, there's no question James should have been sent off. To me it was a deliberate high tackle to the head, similar to many other cheap shots Tedesco has copped during the year. I agree with another comment that the elite players in the game should be protected. Tedesco is one of the bravest players in the game and never hesitates going for the ball when there are players bearing down on him. He should not have to pay for this bravery with a broken jaw. It was a cowardly, dog act.
