I had the same problem. But I used an internet site to get it the right size, I'll walk you through it.

1) Go to http://www.resizeimage.4u2ges.com/
2) Click Launch Image Resizer
3) Click Browse
4) Find the image you want to use as an avatar/signature, double click it.
5) Click Upload Image.
6) Adjust the size as needed (where it says height and width,)
7) Click resize/Process
8) Then Click Dwnload Resized
9) Then use that saved image as your avatar/signature

However for the first few weeks at least it will merely have a redirection instruction visible to allow previous members to make the switch across
