West Tigers coach Mick Potter neary quit for the pits

AS Wests Tigers begin their 2013 campaign tonight, new coach Mick Potter could just as easily be emerging from a hard week down a coal mine.

Ahead of his team's first-up trial against Penrith in Bathurst, Potter yesterday revealed that he was willing to work underground when he returned to Australia last September without any coaching prospects.

Having finished a turbulent tenure with Bradford on five months without pay after the UK Super League club was placed into administration, the 49-year-old also considered opening a childcare business or working in sales.

"There was nothing for me," he said. "I was thinking about getting back into small business like childcare, sales or going down the pit. Coal mining is not a bad lifestyle and the money is good. You also leave your work behind when you go home. It's not a 24-7 job like this one."

But having undertaken a 16-year coaching apprenticeship, Potter wouldn't have things any other way as he prepares to run his eye over a 22-strong squad of NSW and Holden Cup hopefuls.

Given the threadbare resources at his disposal in Bradford, Potter arrived at Concord pinching himself over the wealth of staff and technology that's synonymous with NRL clubs.

Almost half a year without pay saw his family sacrifice weekend trips away or meals out to keep the Bulls going until the end of last season.

"We went backwards a little bit and had to taper things down," Potter said. "I first thought it would only be for two weeks, but it went on and on.

"It was like groundhog day, but it seemed like the right thing to do - to not walk away when things got really tough. There were opportunities to have weekends away in London or go out to dinner, but we couldn't do those things."

So it's not surprising some have told Potter - known among Tigers players as Harry - his overdue graduation to NRL level is the result of karma.

"This job coming up was fortunate and I don't want to be treading all over Tim Sheens' grave," Potter said.

"Someone has mentioned it was a bit of payback, but at the time you're not thinking about that.

"There was maybe a bit of karma involved, but I prefer to think of it as hard work and being in the right place at the right time. I'm certainly not the type of bloke who will be doing cartwheels on the sideline, but I am excited."

I reckon we a lucky to have someone like Mick at the Club after the manner some things were handled last year… He has tonnes of experience and seems to be a real honest bloke.

Smack Em around Mick... Show the boys who's Boss!!!

More important than his coaching credential, Potter seems like a genuinely decent sort of bloke. To work at a broke club for 5 months for no pay or prospect of financial reward speaks volumes about his character.

I FIRST MET POTTER SOME 20 YEARS AGO OUTSIDE PENRITH PARK, I WAS SITTING WITH MY UNDER NINES FOOTBALL TEAM, AS WE HAD JUST BEEN INTO THE PANTHERS DRESSING AS WE WERE TO PLAY OUR GRANDFINAL THE NEXT WEEK END. THINGS HAD NOT GONE WELL IN THE PANTHERS ROOM WITH A FEW PLAYERS BEEN QUIET FOUL. MICK POTTER WALKED BY AND STOP AND ASKED WHAT WE WERE DOING I EXPLAIN WHAT HAD HAPPENED IN THE PANTHERS ROOM, HE PUT HIS BAG DOWN AND SAT DOWN WITH THE BOYS FOR NEARLY 40 MIN, TELLING THEM TO ENJOY THERE GRANDFINAL. I WILL NEVER FORGET HOW GOOD HE WAS TO THE BOYS, HE IS A CHAMPION BLOKE.

Brilliant story… Thanks for sharing BP!

I met Mick Potter at my work when he was playing for Saints,he was a 2 time dally M winner at the time, and we chatted for ages about work and footy,a real decent bloke without the ego,I always liked the bloke, this just confirmed it..

I think Mick Potter will be a perfect fit for Wests Tigers.

I hope Farah and Marshall benefit from a new coach and players like Moltzen can learn to play fullback under a 2 time Dally M winner and great full back.

I starting to get excited about 2013.

i was thinking that too.. i was hoping it was willow's typing error than the DT's. one of the leading newspapers in australia? LOL

Not only have they got the "neary" wrong but they have called us "West Tigers" instead of Wests Tigers.

Agree,, Very good story.

I think all the great things about him and its sound too good to be true.

He sounds like someone that is due for success,, Hopefully the boys deliver him a premiership in October.

The only issue I have is with the hacks comments of Bradfords facilities

Given the threadbare resources at his disposal in Bradford, Potter arrived at Concord pinching himself over the wealth of staff and technology that's synonymous with NRL clubs.

From the Local Paper May of last Year

Bradford Bulls stars showed members of the Federation of Italian Rugby League around its training site at Tong High School, in Westgate Hill Street, Bradford.

The Italian team will have access to the state-of-the-art facilities at the school to acclimatise for the Rugby League World Cup 2013.

I doubt the lazy hack actually did any research just based it on what Mick said about certain lack of everyday stuff within Odsal Stadium during Administration

The Training Facilities at Tong is amongst the best in the UK

It's nice to have a coach who seems quite genuine and no frills and willing to be quite humble. Sheens was stubborn and arrogant and would always say "i told you so" if he got something right once out of 5 times. If you were not in his favourites you were right out of the loop didn't matter how well you played in the reggies. He was a massive ego who would not have worked 5 days without pay let alone 5 months. In 20 years time the bloke will probably have nothing good to say about Wests Tigers. Just like the Cowboys, after being their 6-7 years he still doesn't have anything good to say about the place. Bitter and single minded. Thank god, Potter will be great for the place in the long term I think., I just worry like some others it could take 1-2 years to "Desheens" the place in terms of culture and playing styles/attitudes.

hahaha gotta laugh, because in 6 weeks time if we have a few losses on the board the forum will read SACK POTTER ….ITS STILL HONEY MOON TIME PEEPS
