Wests Campbelltown

What's the story with Wests Campbelltown?

Why aren't they involved in the joint venture?

Wests McArthur have all the juniors, so they own the south west of Sydney - so what happened for them to not to be part of the JV?

They used to have ownership and did have directors on the WT board but they felt they were being ignored and weren’t being listened to by the others so they sold their ownership to WA in 2013. Now they just fund the juniors in the area. Haven’t put any money into the club since 2013.

Sad they gave up but understand they might have become sick of the conniving of WA.

That could’ve been the case but from what I heard the Balmain side of it didn’t pay much attention to them either.
Long time ago, but from memory, it was a bit of a scramble to pick a partner and all in all, I doubt the jv had as much thought put into it as one would expect in those situations.

Terrible situation we find ourselves in. 50/50 or 90/10 hasn't changed the brawling. Just the characters are different.

That’s why the independent board was working, now it’s back to square one at best. Funny how we’ve gone majorly backwards in only 2 weeks, when stuff like this happens it usually takes a few years not WT though.

Totally agree. The peace, calm and optimism was good while it lasted.

Having 2 parties in the inner west was gonna be hard to do that. Both WA and Balmain would have been to blame for that.
SMH 2021 ...

“From the very first board meeting, it was determined that the future of the club was in the south-west corridor, specifically in the Macarthur region,” says Martin Bullock, the Wests Tigers’ first chief executive.

“Everyone went back to their own boards after that meeting, and they quickly changed hats and began to look after their own interests. Never in my time was there a united focus on the future of the club.”

A former employee of the joint venture said that there were three types of people at the Tigers: Balmain people, Wests people and people that needed to pick a side.

The Wests Ts dishonoring the 1999 agreement and failing to commit to the area (in any meaningful way) would have to be the major reason 🙄

Yeah
- Had nothing to do with the Infighting between Wests Campbelltown and Wests Ashfield
Would it?

Probably had nothing to do with Wests Juniors rowing their own boat for the
majority of that time and having not a lot to do with either club on top of that?

You're not the only bloke here that remembers stuff.

So you’re saying Balmain is the sole reason why they didn’t? Given WA have never been big on the region I doubt Balmain is sorely to blame.

Yeah
- Reckon the Tigers would also be the reason Ashfield shipped the Magpies
out to Cambo and left them for Broke in the 80's as well?
I don’t know everything that happened between all 3 parties when WT played their first game I was only 4 years old. And wasn’t even alive when Magpies left Ashfield for Campbelltown but in his mind that’s probably the case what you just said. Balmain would’ve had a hand in the WT not moving south west but they ain’t the only reason why. WA is also to blame.

I never said anyone or anything was "solely to blame"

I imagine Wests Ashfield geographic location is today a factor.

But had the club set up in the south-west as originally conceived - I'm suggesting Wests Ashfield and Wests Leumeah would have remained more pally

From what I know they were never pally to begin with. Seems from day one WA and WM couldn’t get along and was gonna be problems between them no matter what.

After three years of fighting - Wests had exhausted all legal channels to stay in the NSWRL comp - the only way Phillip Street would agree to the Magpies continuing in the comp was if they moved to Campbeltown.

Now you might argue that Wests Ashfield could have propped them up better before the team began to flounder, but as I understand it, the Leagues Club back then wasn't the cash cow it later became (after the influx of Chinese residents - 1990s on).

Quite remarkably, the NSWRL kicked Western Suburbs out despite the club having made the semi's in four of the previous six seasons.
