Wests Tigers back to training following Auckland Nines elimination
Following an early elimination from the NRL Auckland Nines tournament, Wests Tigers players were straight back into pre-season training this afternoon as they completed a weights session at a local fitness centre.
In a disappointing finish to the NRL Auckland Nines campaign, Wests Tigers went down 25-0 to Newcastle in what was a must-win clash as the winner progressed to the finals.
Coach Mick Potter said while the result wasn’t what they had hoped for, the early elimination provided a chance for an extra gym session with Round 1 just three weeks away.
“Unfortunately we were knocked out (of the tournament) having played just one game today and it’s an opportunity to get some training in,” Potter said. “With it still being pre-season the players need to keep their strength.”
Despite failing to make the NRL Auckland Nines finals series, there were plenty of positives for the Club, including the performance of fullback James Tedesco.
New recruit Cory Paterson looked dangerous throughout the tournament, along with exciting young guns Mitchell Moses, Kurtis Rowe and Manaia Cherrington.
While the game varies quite a lot from traditional NRL matches, Potter said that there are important aspects from the tournament that the team will take in to the 2014 season.
“You don’t forget about it (NRL Auckland Nines) because the main concepts of the game are still there, we need to improve and we will certainly be better from that experience for next year when the tournament is on again,” Potter said. “The closer spaces with the thirteen-a-side game is what we have prepared for all pre-season and we had very limited practice for the Nines.”
The team will return to Sydney tomorrow as preparations ramp up ahead of the Round 1 clash with St George Illawarra on March 9, starting with the final trial match next weekend against Cronulla.
“We are in that mode where we are just about to level off with our preparation and to get ready for the season to start,” Potter said.
“We will field a strong team initially in the Sharks trial and it will certainly provide a gauge on where we are at.”
