Wests Tigers battling kicking history

Benji Marshall is a average mediocre Goal kicker..Always has been…. ...He hasn't improved or got any worse....

He is a confidence kicker though...If he nails his first 1 from the sideline...it definately has an effect not just on his kicking but his whole game...

The problem is it's having a negative effect on F/A....Benji obviously wants the job.....would hope that other options were being looked at....Just for back up...

Benji's Style of Kicking has definitely changed since the begining of the year.

Reports early in the year was that he was getting help from Jason Taylor with goal kicking.
Benji early on this season was curling the ball alot more then he has been lately, and he was also missing alot more.

He seems to be kicking alot straighter now with a slight fade on the ball, similar to his kicking style from last year.
He's no El Masri with his kicking, but it seems as tho the club has given JT the flick and Benji has gone back to his original comfortable kicking style.
I think we can put monday night down to an off night, as over the last 4 or 5 weeks his goal kicking stats haven't been that bad (granted we haven't been scoring a plethora of tris either)

Anyone able to produce the stats per game for benji's shots at goal for this season?
I think he was alot worse in the begining of the season then what he has been lately with the exception of monday night.

Well, **i must be kidding myself** because to be sitting at 62.5% now after "improving greatly" must mean that early in the season he was kicking at 40% or lower for his great improvement in kicking to now reach the mighty percentages of the low 60's. You know it makes sense with what i've just said.

Benji kicks like a busted. Always has, always will. He shouldn't be in the team to kick goals. His sole reason for being in the team is to win us games with his freakish skills during the run of play…...........and lets face it, I guess he is also in the team because of his marketabilty.

yes you are kidding yourself. if you honestly dont think benjis kicking has been in good form for the past 10 or so weeks bar monday night, i do not know what games you have been watching.

It has been ok, it has been 'better' but it is not what I would class as 'good'. Last ten games I believe he has kicked at 64%. I know that he has had a couple of perfect nights in that time, but he lacks consistency (believe it or not).

64%, in my opinion, is not good enough for a 1st choice kicker.

But hey, up until the weekend there had been signs that he was turning the corner, so maybe it was just an 'off-night'. I don't mind if his misses a few from the sideline, but on the weekend he missed two from basically in front.

History? Ten years is History or just a 10 year Stat?

I'd love us to have a better goal kicker, but as some of you have mentioned, would Benji actually give it up or throw a hissy fit?

Maybe Sauce could do some practice at training? He's tackling like a Winger

thankyou, until his poor kicking becomes a weekly thing there is no need for drastic changes that would most likely deplete benjis confidence

I want to know, why are we paying someone to teach Benji how to kick a ball. For christ sake, what's there to coach about goalkicking. Just practice, strike the ball and you'll kick goals. My gosh.

Yeah…. How hard must it be???

It's the same as doing a hit up, making a tackle, creating an offload, a line break assist and scoring a try. I must be as easy as doing up ones shoe laces.

All those NRL Players are imposters if they can't do all that

Yes I am. I'm not a regular kicker for my team, however I can but don't do it particularly well.

For someone like Benji though, he doesn't need a technique which can maximize his power or anything like that since he already had the legs, he just needs to stick with one method (That similar to Thurston) and just work on his accuracy.

You can't compare in game skills to goalkicking. Your in game skills are effected by who you're playing, and in what circumstances. Whilst you can prepare and practice for these, you'll never get the same situation at training as you do in a game. Goalkicking however is different. It's the only "skill" in rugby league which never changes through the age goups and doesn't change whethere you're at the local park or at SFS in front of 40,000 people in a semi-final (bar pressure). It's one of the few skills that doesn't put you in direct line of harm and is the only skills aside from general kicking which can be effectively practiced at every training session, it's the only skill that someone who's never played footy before can do consistently better than someone who has. For Benji to be kicking at 63% and guys like Thurston/Gordon/Gidley to be kicking over 85%, shows something is clearly wrong. Simply put, he's either not a natural goalkicker or he just plain sucks. Whichever way you put it, he shouldn't be kicking or he should practice a hell of a lot more/effectively than he does.
