Wests Tigers CEO Grant Mayer's message to Macarthur fans

AFTER a period of discontent between the Wests Tigers, fans and some local politicians, it appears chief executive Grant Mayer has heeded some of the calls and has a message for fans in the Macarthur region.

"We're not going away, we're not over the council - they may be over us - but the reality is we're here for the long term," he told the Chronicle during a visit to Camden last week.

"There's no doubt that we've got to start working harder in our community.

"We've been gifted with the biggest footprint in rugby league. We've got to make sure that we develop our strategy."

One of the ways Mayer wants to reconnect with the region is through a junior development academy.

"Developing a junior academy … is about making sure we have a facility that has a life-learning centre or a school room that these kids can be taught not just about being a good footballer but skills off the field as well," he said.

"We're going to work very hard with the local politicians over the next 12 months to make sure part of our development pathway involves an academy in the south-western region."

The project already has support from Campbelltown state Liberal MP Bryan Doyle.

"I have spoken with Grant and I'm very interested in it," Mr Doyle said. "I'd be very excited to see some details when they're nutted out."

Despite the Campbelltown home game arrangements for 2014 not yet being signed off by Campbelltown Council, Mayer was certain the games would proceed.

"I have no doubt we'll have a deal to play at Campbelltown," he said.

"The terms of this deal is more than a hiring deal; it's a relationship where both parties can win - the bigger the crowds the more opportunities for both of us."

Mayer also acknowledged the club could do more to appeal to fans and politicians in the Macarthur region.

"My focus is to make sure we start engaging with locals better," he said.

"The goals are to make sure that football remains very strong, but our academy development program and pathways program continues to be a key focus."

Im surprised that this post has been up all day and not one whinger from the South West has commented yet. Such a positive article for us.
Any other time they can't wait to cry foul over anything and everything Wests Tigers related. Even colors for frig sake.
Before I get bagged, I too am from the area.

Hope it happens.

This article should be discussed on its merits. If any trolling appears it will be dealt with harshly. For the record, this is a good move by the Tigers and I hope they are able to develop some solid plans for a junior academy in the area.

Just want the footy start

Bring it on

Don't care if its good ,bad or downright ugly for the Tigers ,let us just watch the boys play

Might be time for the 1000th viewing of the 2005 GF

On this subject , the fans want to hear more than talk , they want action

Throwing a bit of bait into the water i see

No. After endless months of reading comments re the Sth West being ignored, I'm SURPRISED that not one person had the decent to commend the club.

I don't know why that's classed as being a troll either.

You're taking an unprovoked swipe at a group of people who haven't said or done anything. Idk if its trolling, but it sure looks as though you're throwing the line out there to get a response so you can point the finger and say ''see i told you so''. You aren't any better than the people you're criticizing by doing it, cos if you didn't care about the us v them crap, it wouldn't even enter your mind what the 'whingers from the south west'' think. Just take the article for what it is.

Went to visit a friend out at Camden on the weekend and took a drive to kirkhim to have a look..the ground looks sensational. I think they will get a very big crowd. Looking forward to it.

Yes good news for the club …. My only issue is we are still not 100% to play any games at Cambo this year. Fait accompli ? Yes probably .... But why leave it to the 11th hour ?

It's a forum full of opinion. Any opinion is that I'm surprised at no conversation regarding the original post considering its importance.

If you're going to have the audacity to shit stir, at least put your name to it. The sooner this Roarfeed bug is fixed the better.

Perhaps you shouldn't have been as condescending

You knew exactly what you were doing, no matter how much you want to deny it.

Of coarse I was having a dig. You're a real Einstein aren't you?
It's my opinion, as a Tigers member, that I think it's piss weak that there is so much wringing but never any positive feedback.

You'd be the most condescending person on this unwelcoming forum.

You obviously have a great gift for telepathy to be so sure of who from the south west has and hasn't read this article.

And as far me being condescending, at least i have the guts to put my name to what i write, unlike some.

There is an article related to this on the nrl.com page in relations on whether Smith should force the Tigers to play more games at Campbelltown

All 4 games against teams that will not have any travelling supporters, bar maybe canberra, makes it tough, but they need to embrace the area before the Roosters,Dogs,Eels or Panthers do.

If the NRL wants to stump up the guaranteed cash then go for it.

If not it will never happen.

I'd prefer to play them at Cambo than Homebush…....I wont be going to either so at least it would be more of a home ground game and would appease the Macarthur crew.

Cmon Smithy.....chuck in some dosh.
