IVAN CLEARY, TODD PAYTEN HEAD THE LIST AS WESTS TIGERS START THE HUNT FOR COACH TO REPLACE AXED JASON TAYLOR

MICHAEL CHAMMAS - SMH

The Wests Tigers believe they can re-sign the big four without knowing who will coach the club next season, as Ivan Cleary firms as the favourite to replace Jason Taylor.
Within an hour of their decision to axe Taylor, the club received four calls from agents putting forward the names of their clients. But the Tigers insist the job is interim coach Andrew Webster's to lose at this

Although the Tigers are backing Webster, who coached Mitchell Moses and Luke Brooks through the grades, they will also begin a six-week search that is set to see Todd Payten's name come up alongside former Penrith coach Cleary and even Dogs boss Des Hasler.
The two-time premiership-winner is off contract at Belmore and has the runs on the board over a long period of time. However, the Tigers, who are still paying Robbie Farah $700,000, would need to decide if they can afford his services.

Payten has the backing of the playing group, having forged a strong bond with them during his time at the club before he joined North Queensland as an assistant. He was, however, overlooked as Mick Potter's successor and didn't leave the club on the best of terms — which could work against him.
Still, Payten does have one possible advantage in that his manager, Isaac Moses, is also the agent of star quartet Aaron Woods, James Tedesco, Brooks and Moses. But Fairfax Media understands the club is reluctant to increase Moses' influence at the Tigers given the perception he has held them to ransom over the future of the big four.

"If any coach, whether it's Todd Payten, Ivan Cleary or anyone else, wants to put their hat in the ring, we'll entertain that within the process," chief executive Justin Pascoe said.
"Andrew would be a part of that mix. We hold Andrew in the highest regard. He's certainly a part of that mix and he's got the opportunity now and it lies with him."
While Woods has previously indicated he wants to know who will be running the side in 2018 before he commits to a deal, Pascoe doesn't believe that is going to be a stumbling block and insists the players won't be consulted.
"No. It's a really clear point — the players do not decide who coaches this organisation," Pascoe said. "There's no defined timeline. We'll follow a formal process and whenever that process comes to a conclusion we'll make everyone aware. There's no timeline — if it takes until the end of the year then it takes until the end of the year. We're more focused on making sure we find the right person for this job."
The Tigers hierarchy met the players after telling Taylor of their decision to sack him, asking them to start taking responsibility for their performances after a horror fortnight that resulted in 34- and 40-point losses to Penrith and Canberra respectively.
"The players have to take responsibility," chair Marina Go said. "We do as an organisation as well. From the board down, we all take responsibility for where we sit today. But the players — we had a conversation with the players this afternoon and they are taking this on board. They're not shying away from the fact they need to step up.
"We obviously had a conversation with Jason this afternoon and clearly he was disappointed — as you'd imagine he would be. It's very difficult news to receive and difficult to deliver. We obviously feel for him. Clearly he was disappointed."

Pascoe trying to take the heat of the big 4 saying they have no say in the coaching decision. Also saying they could take all year to find the coach. Don't like that one little bit. I think the new coach needs to be decided asap and has to take ownhership of the 2018 roster.

Pascoe would be a fool to give the media a free timeline. They will have their own internal targets, no need to give it publically and have it hanging over their heads.

Rushing a decision is the worst thing to do, it needs to be the correct decision after several incorrect ones.

It needs to be Ivan Cleary.

Bring him in as soon as possible and let him shape the roster before everyone commits elsewhere.

Couldnt agree more. Im thinking Pascoe is just steering the media away, well i hops so anyway.

Cleary is a good signing in many ways. His allegiance will lie with management given his background with Pascoe. If he can wield his charms on the players it could unite the players and board.

We still need to let Brooks go though. Not worth the coin.

Moses isn't worth the coin he is chasing either at this stage. Elite playmakers need a decent kicking game at the very least and they are consistent. Moses doesn't tick either of those 2 boxes.

Cleary is the smart choice, but I wouldn't be surprised if Payten gets the gig. At the end of the day, whoever comes in needs to get rid of half the team and fix our deficiencies, namely wing, centre, backrow and have a good look at the halves. Not sold on the idea of re-signing Brooks tbh.

Its a smart play to pretend you haven't approached anyone before sacking your current coach. The last thing they need is a potential law suit from Taylor. But we all know that's not how RL works, and we know we have many players off contract.

My crystal ball suggests Cleary will be appointed in a 'consultancy role' after Webster has a couple of losses, allowing him to shape a roster for 2018\. Then once the season is nearly done, Pascoe's will hold a press conference naming Ivan Cleary as the Head Coach for 2018 ensuring that Cleary won't have the results of the 2017 Tigers on his resume.

It makes sence as it was more than likely discussed a week ago in a small coffee shop on the south coast of NSW?!

Hope your right , hope that this was a ploy to get rid of Farah so the club would still come out smelling like roses , because after re-watching the presso I don't think highly of Go or Pascoe

Surely they would of known what questions were coming with the call they made , yet them seemed ill prepared , Go wasn't even listening intently at one stage :rant

This decision didn't happen last night …... well certainly hope it didn't 😱pen_mouth:

For me, this is the worst result. The longer we take to install a new coach, the more likely we are to miss the semis.

I doubt that. A coach wants to get stuck in straight away and Tigers won't want an interim for a whole season.
Cleary will be appointed very soon I think. And hope.

James Hooper reported that Todd Payten is also managed by Isaac Moses!!!

If they go with anyone but Cleary, especially some of the other so called options, this club deserves a tattoo of the wooden spoon.

I actually thought Benny spoke quite well last night. I was surprised - he is not usually that articulate.

His comment in relation to the big 4 was to make reference that WT can build the club around these guys like Melbourne did with Smith, Slater and Cronk. The commentators/journos tried to turn it around by saying "these players are not as good".

The point was not that the players were as good but were good enough to build our future around.

I am sure we all agree with that.

He also made a point that Buzz should not have reported that 7 other guys were involved in the mad Monday scandal because it is not good for the club, game or current players who friends and families are no doubt questioning their integrity.

Buzz said that it is not his job to promote league as a journo. If he loves the game as much as he says he does, he should be promoted the game and not reporting hearsay garbage. I bet if it were the Sharks, he would have blunted his pencil before writing…

If Taylor gets all that he is owed as per his contract, how on Earth could that possibly add up to a law suit if they've sacked him for non performance? That'd be like saying that Farah could have sued the club because they had Liddle and Ballin on hand to take his job? Preposterous.

I am sure that Ivan will be nowhere as terrible as the coaches Wests Tigers had have over the past five years. In fact I think he will be one of the best the club has ever had.
