Wests Tigers have an identity crisis

**Wests’ Tigers have an identity crisis**

The New South Wales Government and Premier Barry O’Farrell may have given the Wests Tigers the wake-up call they needed after announcing the budget for 2012-2013.

O’Farrell, a Tigers tragic, and Treasurer Mike Baird have inadvertently woken a sleeping giant in the sporting mega centre that is the Macarthur. A hotbed of sports crazy kids who have been snubbed by the Tigers for far too long.

Its almost been criminal what the Tigers have done to one of the fastest growing areas in New South Wales.

Time and time again, the club has turned its back on Campbelltown and the surrounding areas. The place is an afterthought.

Considering the struggle Sydney clubs have in the National Rugby League, its mind boggling that the club decided to move even further away from Campbelltown Stadium and instead set themselves up at Concord.

Instead of securing their future in a guaranteed growth area, the Tigers only play four games a year in the region and rarely are players seen training at the complex at Leumeah.

Its simply idiotic and smug that the club can hold such a large place to ransom the way they do.

There is always a place for Leichhardt Oval and there always will be. The nostalgic venue is a hot ticket and should be treated accordingly.

But Macarthur is different. The people want to be wanted. They want to be treated like Phil Gould is now treating the people of Penrith. With respect and with a team they can truly support.

Little wonder a poor crowd turned out for the Tigers last match at Campbelltown against a North Queensland side that featured Johnathan Thurston, James Tamou and Matt Bowen.

Enter the NSW Government.

In their budget, the government announced new projects costing $181 million dollars on new housing areas which will support 76,000 new homes. Many of them in Camden and Liverpool.

They also announced $397 million for the South West Rail Link. Not to mention upgrades to the M5 Motorway and Camden Valley way. These are the growth indicators Tigers Chief Executive Stephen Humphreys surely must be looking at.

Balmain legend Benny Elias is on record saying that Campbelltown is the place the Tigers need to be.

“The ideal situation for the NRL would be to have the Dragons playing down at Illawarra, the Rabbits up at Gosford and the Tigers out at Campbelltown” Elias said in 2006.

“That is just my personal opinion. I have a great personal attachment to Leichhardt but you would have to say that would be the optimum situation for the NRL.”

The “Wests” Tigers have an identity crisis. More importantly, the people of Macarthur have an even bigger one.

Its time the Tigers hierarchy put down the lattés and head out west and get in the trenches.

No doubt that the WT need to connect with the people of the South West. Hearts and Minds

Well said.

We may have differing opinions on how to achieve this but it is the long term goal for the club and at least 95% of it's fans

I wonder how they manage this while managing the expectations of burgeoning inner west supporter base. Interesting times ahead

Great article, very true indeed the area is a gold mine,we don't want to lose it.

I really like the idea of the mooted training facility and basing of the NYC squad.

It gives the club a chance to really engage these young guys with the community and get them out into schools more often. I imagine it would be something for a kid to throw a ball around with one of these young blokes and follow their career to debut with WT if they are good and lucky enough to do so.

Grass roots, opposed training sessions with different U17's clubs (well monitored of course) to give them a look in and a point of aspiration.

The facility also gives a better access point to the Macarthur for the NRL squad.

I would dearly love to see a small registered club in the new Oran Park area branded as Wests Tigers and the re-branding of Wests Campbelltown and the Balmain sites.

With proper stewardship we are in a unique position to remain financially viable and grow our base in every part of Sydney

Who is this Guy - Curtis Woodward?

What are his creds to be passing comment with this all knowing disrespectful tone??

I agree that the tigers Must take total ownership of the MacArthur region and make it one of our strongholds.

Time and time again we have this same types of discussions that our beloved tigers are blessed and cursed with support from two very different geographical areas and the rest.

Until our two smaller grounds are upgraded (Parking included) I am putting up with Concord and the Game Split.

Just a freelance journo.

Funny though that in another article he suggested Phil Bailey would be a good buy for WT.

I agree in regards to the disrespectful tone but just mark that part down to bias and examine the core issue which is a valid point which I think we all agree on to a point that a bigger Macarthur presence is required.

Remove the bias and BS from all of these discussions and we have a chance to talk about something real and pressing. The way I see it the bias and agenda are things holding us back so ignore the tone, poor language skills and generally poorly written parts of the article and focus on the points worth mulling over

I'd hate it if another team tried to encroach on the Campbelltown area as I live there, I use to be a magpies supporter but when both clubs merged I followed Wests tigers from day 1 and have been to 90% of the Campbelltown games, and I also have signed up to be a member for the last 4 years, i wish the tigers would try to spend more time down here and get the whole community behind them

Yeah any idea were this editorial was printed or posted?

It certainly is disrespectful Spartan I agree 100%.

What a garbage story .
Idiotic and smug holding the Macarthur region to ransom?
'Time and again they have turned their back on the region' - and he uses that as the reason for the poor turnout (his words) at the last Campbelltown game.
The Government giving them a wake up call by announcing development ?
Yeah , I'm sure O'Farrell rang Humphries and said "Hey , we're announcing developments that include some sections of the Macarther area - get that up the board members"
It should be noted the only thing idiotic and smug is the fact this clown (who is only a blogger on Roar) can justify writing such drivel and then believe it has any worth.

Fair assessment of how to view the article.

His points regarding the state budget are interesting. The government is giving all the signs the area will continue to grow by investing in housing and infrastructure.

In time, hopefully the stadium gets another injection of funds and we can get a 30,000 (or more) capacity.

You are taking it to the extreme and that was not the impression I received. He just referenced the amount of investment being placed in the area being a good indication for the club that the area will continue to grow, therefore highlighting the importance of Wests Tigers to maintain/grow its attachment to the area.

Tigers didn't turn their back on the area. They saved it.
One word: Criteria

Wests didn't make it and Balmain could have just let them die. So I agree that the article is disrespectful

Like it or hate it, you don't have to support the tigers to know this area is growing rapidly and is starved of sport.

As much as i hate him, if Gus came in as a director like he did at the Panthers, he'd be doing the same thing with C-town as he is with Penrith atm.

Lol at digging up a Benny Elias quote from 2006, Curtis must hav been saving that one up for a while.
Investing in the southwest should b a good thing for the region and the club, not sure it was necessary to turn the story into a dig at managment.

Balmain wouldn't have fit the criteria either so what are you trying to say?

Yes, but in the course of 13 years, it has now come to fruition why Balmain could not stand alone. One could argue, the shoe is on the other foot now….
