WESTS TIGERS HELP CLOSE THE GAP
18/08/2010 4:22:04 PM
In the lead up to this week’s clash against the Eels, Wests Tigers players are getting behind the NRL’s efforts to improve the health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Last year, the National Rugby League (NRL) was the first sporting code to support Close the Gap, Australia’s largest ever campaign to improve the life expectancy of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Currently, Aboriginal babies are up to three times more likely to die before the age of one than other Australian babies and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people still live more than a decade less than other Australians.
The aim of Close the Gap is to lift the standard of Indigenous health up to the levels enjoyed by all Australians by the year 2030.
As part of the NRL’s Close the Gap round, Wests Tigers reinforced the Close the Gap message at the Koori Cup Rugby League day at Campbelltown Sports Stadium today.
Wests Tigers half-back Robert Lui, a Torres Strait Islander from Townsville in North Queensland, said he felt proud that rugby league was getting behind such a worthy cause.
“Close the Gap is literally a life or death issue for so many of my people. That’s why it would be great for all Tigers fans to get out and support the campaign,'' Lui said.
In addition to Lui, fellow Tigers Lote Tuqiri, Aaron Woods and John Skandalis were on hand yesterday for a photo opportunity to show their support for a worthy cause.
Wests Tigers commitment to Close the Gap has also seen the club begin to work with KARI Aboriginal Resources to develop and implement high quality, culturally appropriate programs to assist Indigenous communities in South West Sydney. This work has been possible thanks to funding from the NRL All Stars match.
