WESTS TIGERS LEARNING CENTRE TO HELP OUT STRUGGLING YOUTHS
11/02/2011 3:18:24 PM

On Friday 4th February, a group of Wests Tigers players and staff including Campbelltown legend John Skandalis took time out o their normal day to lay the groundwork in what is to be an exciting new community venture in Campbelltown.

‘The room has been donated by Wests Campbelltown Leagues Club and was in pretty poor condition so we got together and gave it a new coat of paint to get the ball rolling.’ Skandalis said.

The group was supported by Bunning’s Narellan and Dulux who graciously donated the painting materials and their time to coordinate the day. Members of the local ARL Development team also donated their time to help out.

For the last six months, Wests Tigers have been in the process of setting up a Community Learning Centre in the region, to help out young school children that are struggling with mainstream schooling. The idea is based on similar other NRL club models such as Penrith Panthers ‘Panthers on the Prowl’ and the Titans Learning Centre on the Gold Coast.

Wests Tigers have been working with the local council & the NSW Department of Education and Training to find out what the real need is in the community. Once this has been recognised a program will be established to suit this need.

By taking kids out of mainstream schooling into an environment which doesn't feel like a traditional classroom we will hopefully be able to keep these kids in school. With Wests Tigers players acting as mentors, hopefully the kids will enjoy the experience and get back on track with everything.

‘It’s a great initiative by the club reaching out to kids in need and giving Wests Tigers a greater presence in the area’ Skandalis continued. ‘The ‘Learning with League’ Centre's have been getting more common in the NRL clubs and it’s great to see Wests Tigers establishing their own. Hopefully this will be something the Campbelltown community embraces and puts their support behind.’

If anyone would like to help out with the room they are encouraged to contact the club for more details.

‘We want to give the room a real Community feel, with paintings of Tigers and Magpies around the walls. If there are any budding graphic artists or former teachers out there who are willing to donate some time to decorate the room then contact Wests Tigers.’ Skandalis included.

There's a new young dude at concord who's helping put this all together. He's a full-time community office I think.
Well done WT
