Wests Tigers looking to shed veteran big men

I think it's sad as they have been such good club men "Fulton leaving for a year" I think both could earn money elsewhere but this is business.
Gibbs, Fulton and Payton are all good 1st grade players but unfortunately they are just that.
Blair is an international, Woods, BMM and Fifita are moving forward and all have a little X factor about them.

I would be happy to get Blair and resign these boys.

I recognise the importance of re-signing and retaining the likes of Fifita, Woods and Groat, all 3 could become dominant rep standard front rowers in the years to come, but offloading Gibbs and Fulton seems a bit premature to me. Both players are around 27 years old, they still have at least 3 good years left in them provided no major injuries are suffered.

Payten on the other hand I understand, he's 32 and struggling with injury at the moment, but like others have mentioned, I'd be letting go of the likes of Moors, Flanagan and Daniela who are all off-contract at the end of this season, plus I'd let Ryan go and look at using the likes of Faleula Finau, Limoni Kamuta, Tim Simona and Ratu Tagive as outside backs for depth next year.

A lot may depend of whether the Tigers sign Adam Blair and how much coin they offer him in regards to the possible offloading of Fulton and Gibbs - if the story is true.

Agree 100%.

The reserve backs are going pretty well at the moment and IMO the likes of Latu, Meaney, Finau, Kamuta, Simona, Tagive, Mullaney and Clarke are all more than capable of covering backline positions for Utai, Brown, Ayshford, Lawrence, Tuqiri and Mckinnon.

Unless the NRL gets a draft system going, they really need to make more concessions for club juniors. Look at the Bulldogs for instance. Corey Payne is the only member of the team who played his junior footy under Canterbury. The Tigers on the other hand are fairly lucky, with probably half the team playing all their footy under either Wests or Balmain. But as has been said, why should we be punished for our own success?

I like both Gibbs and Fulton. In some ways I'd prefer to lose Fifita than Gibbs. Fulton could take over from Rhino when he retires.

We need to keep Woods. BMM and Fifita are definitely players that are high up on the keeper list as well.

Their are some smart minds at work at HQ, with the very real chance of two teams being introduced in 2013 now is the time to get your house in order for the next three to five years. The minute the two new franchises are announced player demand and payments will go through the roof. You have to be one step in front of your opposition and if that means shedding a few club legends to place yourself in a stronger position so be it

**I cant understand the so called "salary cap" issue. In 2013(year after next) the CAP goes out to $7M. and the 25 man roster goes to 30men…so why the need to shed players?...The club should shed all mentioned except Gibbs(remember just 2 years ago we were short of props!!)...backend Blairs contract to 2013 and she'll be right!**

There's no guarantee we'll secure $1billion for the TV rights at this point in time. The IC may fall over before then, and the current powers that be will bend over and sell the game short again, and there's no guarantee that the IC can garner that sort of cash for the TV rights yet.

I hope (and suspect) that this has been triggered by an approach by another club (probably Sharks). If this is the case, it really could be a win/win/win situation as sad as it would be to see them both go

I agree with Alexaki. The new TV rights will be huge. We will smash the $1billion dollar mark CB you wait and see.

We must keep Gibbs and Fulton. Shed Meaney (as we have Mullaney), shed Flanagan (as we have Akeripa), shed Moors (as we have Murdoch Massalla), shed Shirnack (as Groat is coming through), shed Payten and make him an assistant (as his body is waving a white flag).

The shedding of these players will help us sign Blair and keep Fulton and Gibbs.

The way things are going, I believe there will be one State Cup side next year anyhow.

We will be structurally sound player wise with my suggestions.

Going to Cronulla has been such a fantastic career move for our players… I'd say Liam is more chance of going back to the ESL.

Fulton is only 18 months younger than Heighington.

Bug, I didn't say it definitely wouldn't be. I was merely expressing that anything can happen between now and then and clubs should definitely not start signing players with the new deal in mind so as not to sell themselves short or wind up breaching the cap. We have no idea that the cap is actually going to be raised to $7m and we don't know if they are going to incrementally increase it either. Without any guarantees in place we shouldn't be venturing outside $4.5m in 2013\. FTR, I don't want Fulton or Gibbs to go either, and I would prefer Todd decides when its time for him to retire.

That said, it's all heresay at the moment and any clubs having contracts signed acting on what are currently fictional figures floating around in a glorified sports gossip paper like the Terrorgraph is foolhardy, although I don't doubt that it will happen.

Seems like a strange move to get rid of Gibbs who qualifies for salary cap concessions because of his junior years with the club and a guy in Fulton who got the club out of a barrel of mess by taking a one year contract in England

Yeah, this **/\**

Loyalty is dead, yet clubs expect fans to show loyalty.

This thread is hysterical. Keep it coming everyone. Good for a laugh on the long trip home. Cause we all believe what is in the Telecrap don't we.

**Problem is I can never see myself supporting another club…even if they gave away free membership passes!..**.

I'd never ever support another club either…..but the level of my support can and does wane or increase depending on what road the club is travelling

I neveer believe much from the telegraph these days! I was suprised that the article wasnt written by the biigest goose their Phil Rothfeild!

only will believe any of it, once it is confirmed that Liam, Bryce and Todd will no longer be playing for wests-tigers, and other clubs announce them as acquisitions.

for all those whinging and complaining about loyalty.

would you prefer to keep local juniors who are nearing 30 and struggling with injuries, and go back to the dark old days Pre Sheens where we realllllly struggled, or let 2 players go to another club which is financially better for them, and in the meantime sign New Zealands vice captain and one of the best forwards in the world, as well as upgrade contracts to 4 awesome 20 year olds who are going to be the future of the club?

yes, fults and gibbs will be sadly missed if they leave, but if we want to be one of the strongest clubs in the NRL, we have to think with our head, not heart.

(after saying all that, there is a very good chance that the 'insiders' are L Fulton and B Gibbs, in the best prank they have ever come up with)
