Wests Tigers NSW Cup Structure

I believe the new tv $$$ will be put towards salary cap increases up to a certain level. Savings made from removal of red tape will also bring some extra $$. Once that is at a happy medium then the IC will look into expansion. Perth and another team in 2015 most likely. I like your proposal galahs, something the game needs, not just the WT

I wonder instead of salary cap increases, wouldn't they be better to just use that money to include 2 extra teams.

That means there is more money in the game (extra $10 million per year for players), more teams bidding for the top players (so their price naturally goes up), talent is still spread evenly, but also more NRL opportunities.

EDIT: I've just realised that I probably haven't clarified myself enough. Each club should still get an equal amount, however the cap should be marginally increased so that the increased grant will help the likes of Cronulla, Manly et al cover their losses (I don't agree that they are holding the NRL to ransom, but this is a realistic scenario,) so clubs like ours, Brisbane and Canterbury will be able to stock the coffers.

My ideal scenario is that the NRL IC allows Manly, Cronulla and the like to hang around in their present state and give them a three-to-five year plan to start turning a dollar otherwise they will be forced to fold/merge/relocate. There's only so long they can hold the league back. Balmain and Wests sacrificed plenty, why can't others?

Clubs such and Manly and Cronulla are hanging on desperately and are hoping (ie praying) the new tv deal saves them. However in the end, the only thing that will save a club is generating revenue streams outside of the NRL grant.

The Players' Union will always ensure players' wages are linked to the grant. The NRL could give each team $100m per year and it would not make a difference - players would demand the salary cap to be $99.5m and they would get it. Clubs who try to use the grant for operations at the expense of paying players will only see performance drop on the field (unless they have a freak batch of juniors - eg: Wests 2005).

Yep, agreed Gary. The more you give some clubs, the more they will spend as winning 'today' is far to great a challenge to most clubs and the egos on the boards. Clubs who are in trouble like Manly and Parramatta are always spending outside there revenue streams purely to shore up talent.

The NRL needs to find a way to ensure clubs are trading solvently, or they lose there franchice licence agreements. Until this happen, some of these clubs will continue to hold back the NRL.
