Wests Tigers Punt Ayshford

Man thats sad if true. This dude was seriously tapping on the door of representative duties last year. He seemed bigger faster and is ability to find holes off flat balls was crazy good. Fast forward 12 months and here we are.

I said it in another post and i'll say it hear again. ALL our outside backs had a poor year bar Beau Ryan. Its what happens when you keep chopping and changing the halves!!!!

Ashy had a poor year, but geez there are some short memories here. 2011 he carried the backline in the absence of Lawrence. Stepped up to the plate big time. Someone on the previous page even said Lawrence had poor form the last 18 months…....um duh, he was out for most of 2011 with a dislocated hip......and this year was also a victim of the coaches player shuffles.

No he wasn't.

He's had one good, consistent year. That is all.

If he was talked about as a potential rep player, it was by one-eyed Tigers fans.

He's an average player.
 
Ayshord is a bad loss. His form this year, just like Lawrence, was badly affected by the constant screw ups Sheens made in the halves this year. This prevented the centres creating any good combinations or set plays and worst of all, getting any quality ball.

Ayshford showed last year what he is capable of.

That's the Ayshford we are losing.

I can't believe so many people sit here and bag Ayshford and not Lawrence, who was equally as bad, for exactly the same reasons.

This is mindnumbingly stupid.

It's his defence for me, he missed 71 tackles all year and you can't blame Sheens for that.

He never looks likely to set up his outside men either, he has one thing going for him, hes a strong runner of the ball, but he doesn't run great lines and he doesn't look to offload.

A good centre should still be able to create some opportunities for himself not just wait for a half to put him through a hole, thats the difference between a wide running back rower and a centre. Ayshford doesn't ask enough questions of the defense for me
 
You can blame Sheens for moving Blake into the second row in defence during games and then forcing him out wide in attack.

Sure it's still Ayshford's job to make the tackles. But I reckon Blair would have missed more tackles, why isn't he released?

Our centres had to try and create opportunities from dummy half on kick returns. There is not a centre out there who can regularly and consistently do that and you are seriously kidding yourself if you think otherwise.

We had bugger all momentum for large chunks of games, which meant the ball was handed to the centres when nothing was happening the they were flat footed half the time.

I know Ayshford had a bad year. But Lawrence was just as bad, yet avoids criticism.

Both a quality players and Ayshford started improving a lot last year under Folkes. Another season of that and he would have been even better still.

This is what I was thinking. Ayshford was average this year, but how much of that was his fault? He has shown signs of potential and under a different coach could be very good. I guess we will see when he gets that opportunity…
 
I agree it's a bit harsh on Blake putting him in this position. But the same goes for Beau and Chris. The reality is we're moving talent we don't want to move but need to move for salary cap pressures either now or in 12 months time. That's how it appears anyways. To be honest, i've gotten over the initial fury regarding all this and just want whatever needs to be done to actually just be done with. Get it done now and look forward. The club has screwed up, they don't need to admit it, everyone can see it. Sheens and Humphreys should come under real pressure for their handling of the cap. It looks grossly mismanaged.

Blair missed 77 tackles your correct 6 more than Ayshford, but he also made 600+ twice as many as Ayshford. Not only that but Blair is a proven performer for Melbourne and NZ and should be given more time.

Ayshford made 4 line breaks all year, and your kidding yourself if you think everytime he touched the ball it was out of dummy half or on kick returns, many times when the play went out his side it came to an end as he is awful when it comes to putting his winger away.

Your right in saying Lawrence had a poor year, but he wasn't as bad. He offers alot more, hits the line with pace and knows how to put his winger away. How often does Ayshford hit the ball at pace?

Lawrence at his pick was top 3 centres in the game, Ayshford at his peak was a good NRL player
 
No great loss - he is porbably in the 5 worst starting centres in the game. That isnt his fault and he tries hard but he isn't up to it. Lets face it would Ayshford make the top team at full fitness in any of the clubs leading the comp - Nope
 
Blake definitely has talent but it he has not come on under the WT coaching regime.

His missed tackles are a worry but he is not the only one with poor technique! All season it has looked to me like he and others desperately need a concentrated coaching effort on their tackling skills.

His lack of offloads are also a concern, once again either he needs specific coaching and guidance in this area, or needs to be moved to the back row.

His apparent under-acheiving attacking stats might be as much about lack of quality halves combination as anything.

Is he aware of all this? He has looked particularly dissinterested to me this year.

So under a better suited coaching staff he will still reach his potential - let's face it he does have a fair bit to work with there. Always hoped he would do this with us but if it is not happening then all the best to both parties…
 
i think all these headlines are very poor reflection of whats happening, i think players are being told the truth about performances and the direction wests want to take and are given the opportunity to explore their options else where.

anyone could see in his last 3 years at melbourne Blair was going backwards and getting worse,he should not be given anymore time hes had a whole year to get him act together and doesnt even look like he improved one bit

Ayshford going sucks but the clean out is needed the only problem is we still have benji and sheens until they both go the club is still gonna go through the same problems
 
You can't have both your centers as the "best in the game"! It is about the quality of the overall squad. You need a mix of superstars, solid players and juniors to keep the team balanced.

Blake is our Michael Pobjie. He is reliable and can bust tackles. It is not fair to compare his missed tackles, as he defends at center and his tackles are more likely to be one on one whereas Blair defends in the middle as part of the wall of forwards.

I agree with madunit, but I also like dermos argument. I don't want to lose Blake, in fact I don't want to lose any of the players mentioned when I look at them individually. But the fact is our team has no backbone and it is those individuals that make up the experience in the team.

My concerns is that Sheens gets rid of the players and does the hard work with a plan in mind. If he then gets sacked who is to say that the replacement coach would have agreed. We cannot send ourselves broke by getting rid of Sheens - as much as I want him gone. If he has a cushy job at the Warriors planned then negotiate. I can't help but think this has been planned for a while to give the new coach a clean slate. Lets hope so.
 
I don't think Blake deserves the chop. He has had a pretty ordinary season but showed last year he has plenty of talent. The whole team was a mess this year. I think he will come good. Could be one to come back and bite us if he moves on.

Probably because Ayshford didn't go through a career threatening injury like Lawrence did.

Also, Ayshford has had one above average season, that is it. Lawrence has runs on the board, even if he was poor this year too.
 
I have liked Ayshford, but believe he was very poor this year, IMO our worst player (of the regulars), he gave away so many penalties, often late in the tackle count, he made mistakes and seemed to have lost a bit of pace. 2010 & 2011 he impressed me.

IMO whether he stays or go doesn't concern me either way.

Of the players we have let go, none concern me to much.
