“It will be a question for St George Illawarra fans to debate in the countdown to next season.

Who got the best of the deal that has seen Luciano Leilua traded to the Wests Tigers to allow for Trent Merrin’s return to the Dragons?

Merrin will make a St George Illawarra comeback while the Dragons are also chasing another Super League player.

Merrin returns on a two year deal at the club he made his debut at in 2009 after gaining a release from Super League club Leeds.

The move impacts a host of players with his 2010 premiership teammate Matt Prior taking his place at the Rhinos which will ease significant salary cap pressure at the Sharks.

Merrin’s arrival will also allow Leilua to take up a multi-year deal to join the Wests Tigers immediately after being granted an early release from his Dragons deal.

**The Daily Telegraph understands Leilua has just agreed to a three-year deal worth an estimated $1.3 million at the Tigers.**

Leilua’s agent Mario Tartak confirmed Leilua, a local junior, did not want to leave the Dragons but was pretty much shown the door to help accommodate Merrin’s return.

The Dragons are also trying to sign former Parramatta and Manly outside back Brayden Wiliame.

The 26-year-old has spent the past three seasons with English Super League club Catalans and was part of their Challenge Cup victory last year.

Wiliame has predominantly played in the centres but has also spent time on the wing.

The Dragons have been relative quiet in the player market heading into 2020. Merrin and potentially Wiliame will join Issac Luke with the veteran hooker the Dragons only official signing to date.

Merrin fell-out with the club’s management which contributed to his defection to Penrith in 2016.

He has played 205 top grade NRL games before featuring for Leeds this year.

Merrin has been keen to return home for some time with discussions to bring him back to St George Illawarra happening as early as the middle of the season as a potential replacement for the suspended Jack de Belin.

But his rich Leeds deal and the Dragons tight salary cap made any move difficult. The two parties met again recently before Merrin return to Leeds”.

Good to see the wheels in motion. Reminds me of that Oprah Winfrey meme where "Everybody's a winner"...

You get a player!
You get a player.
And
You get a player!
I love footy!!

The early stories were he wanted out and to get fit under Madge? Now his agent is saying he never wanted to leave?

Who believes anything an agent says.....seriously.

I think due to recent events, the only TRUE confirmation is when tigers officially announce it lol.

I hope he kills it here, but at this stage we have signed a fringe first grader on near enough to rep money.

If he is awful we are stuck paying for him for 3 years. If he is great, he can complain and ask for a release at the end of next year and see what happens from there.

Joey Leilua can be a match winner on his day and now that Canberra have signed Curtiss Scott from the Storm, he might be interested in joining his brother at WT. Madge should be able to sort out any of his occasional indisciplinary issues.

Hopefully he doesn't want to join his brother.

Joey has the smarts of a kg of unskinned sausages. He is sooooo stupid on field. So many dumb mistakes. Please no.
But I’m sure he’s a nice guy😀

He’s on similar money to what McQueen is rumoured to be on and he’s rotting in Reggie’s, but I agree I think the money is a bit high hopefully he kills it though.

How much did we pay for Luciano? He came from a team that came second last and didn start in many games and has no rep experience ?

400k played under McGregor that’s the plus the whole pack were poor last year. He’s a beast powerful forward who can use the ball. Big lad has to shed 10kgs and play at 106kg as he’s only 6’1. Could be anything I like the signing big time but it carries huge risk regarding fitness and value for money if he can’t play at least 60 minutes a game.

I hope madge does not take too much kgs of him as we need forwards with mass, this was what the blow up with packer was all about madge wanted him to lose kgs and packer wanted to keep his bulk.

Great signing. This guy has great impact. Brings something different to the team. Not as versatile as Matterson but offers more impact. Despite popular opinion,?he can play long minutes.

Wests Tigers are pleased to announce the signing of Luciano Leilua for the coming three seasons.

The three-year deal will see the talented young forward join Wests Tigers effective immediately after being granted a release by the St. George-Illawarra Dragons — signed at the club through to the end of the 2022 NRL season.

A Samoan international, Leilua made his first-grade debut for the Dragons in 2016 after starring at a junior level — featuring for the New South Wales U/18’s and Australian Schoolboys in 2014 before being named in the 2016 NYC Team of the Year.

The 23-year-old has since played 43 first-grade games for the Dragons across four years and enters the 2020 campaign off the back of a strong season that saw him post career highs in games, linebreaks, offloads, tackles and running metres.

Wests Tigers Head Coach Michael Maguire said he was looking forward to working with Leilua and seeing his career further develop at the club.

“I’m very pleased we’ve been able to secure a player with Luciano’s talent and potential for the future,” Maguire said. “He offers another dimension to our forward pack and gives us an added edge with his ball-playing and creativity.

“With more experience and time, I can see Luciano developing into a really strong player for this club and we’re all excited to see him take those next steps in his career here.”

Wests Tigers CEO Justin Pascoe welcomed Luciano to the club.

“On behalf of all at Wests Tigers, I’d like to welcome Luciano to the club and echo our delight in seeing him commit long-term to Wests Tigers,” Pascoe said.

“Luciano has developed into a quality forward since his debut and we’re looking forward to providing him with an opportunity to keep improving as a player both on and off the field.”

Having represented Samoa during their strong World Rugby League Nines campaign and Oceania Cup Test match against Fiji earlier this month, Leilua will return for pre-season training alongside the club’s other senior players on December 2.
