I absolutely hate this sentence and for me it totally sums up why I think Benji has been one of the worst halves in the comp this season.

Note to Benji….you didnt win a premiership, win the golden boot, win the world cup and become the Kiwis skipper because you are a controlling halfback. You accomplished all this by being a brilliant, attacking 5/8.

Him talking about his natural skill and flair as being a negative is very concerning to me.

Yep exactly right.

And this sounds like the coach speaking to me - "control, control control". What a load of rubbish.

I would hazard a guess that if the entire team showed a bit of aggression and mongrel, and play more direct as opposed to lateral, they'd win a hell of a lot more and certainly be a lot more competitive in the games that they do lose.

That is straight out of Tim's mouth, for god sake let the bloke play his natural game at 6 and get a bloody 7 in there,it is not that hard. :bash

Funny because people on here were pretty content with his play vs the raiders the second time around when he played a very controlling game and suddenly dislike and forget about it. A "more mature Marshall" was the general vibe.

you cant deny benji hasnt had some good games at 7, he has. but his natural ability and skillset is more suited to 6\. reading that line where his natural 5/8 wants to come out every now and then….thats who he is for christs sake. it kills me to say but i dont think we will win another comp if benji plays out his career at half.

Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall set to be paired with eighth halves partner this season

AWAY from rugby league, Benji Marshall is a model of fidelity as he prepares to marry beloved fiance Zoe Balbi in December.

But it's a much different story on the field.

Thanks to a combination of injuries, failed experiments and Robert Lui's sacking; Marshall has become the NRL's most promiscuous halves partner.

This weekend, the Tigers ace will be paired with his eighth this season - second-rower Liam Fulton.

That's a new partner every 2 1/2 weeks - a strike rate RSVP dating gurus can only fantasise about.

Over the previous 19 matches, Marshall has been unsuccessfully matched with Tim Moltzen, Jacob Miller, Curtis Sironen, Tom Humble, Blake Ayshford, Chris Lawrence and Robbie Farah.

There have also been eight others since his debut for a total of 31 changes at the scrum base in nine seasons.

Given this crazy carousel, it's little wonder Marshall was disorientated in last Sunday's heavy loss to Souths.

"It's not been easy," Marshall said yesterday. "It's very hard to build combinations when you change a few times.

"But at the same time I've not been happy with my season on a personal level.

"There's no point looking at who you are playing with when you have to look at yourself in the mirror."

But if Tigers fans reflect on Marshall's journey - notwithstanding serious injury - it's obvious his most sustained blasts of brilliance are bank-rolled by stability.

Scott Prince holds the record of most consecutive games alongside Marshall, with the pair sticking together 26 times in 2005.

That was also the same season Wests recorded their fairytale premiership win, which catapulted Marshall to hero status.

He then had to wait five seasons before the Prince streak was even threatened.

Alongside Lui in 2010 and 2011, Marshall rediscovered his best form and Wests broke a bewildering finals drought that extended way back to that grand final.

But Lui's sacking last November has now proven a doomsday omen for Tigers coach Tim Sheens, who hasn't been able to find a candidate nearly suitable enough.

Moltzen spent the off-season preparing to play alongside his ex-flatmate, but James Tedesco's opening-round injury and indifferent form forced him to revert to fullback within a month.

The replacements have been changed with the frequency of bed linen since.

Rookie Sironen looked the most promising option because his youth encouraged Marshall to play with more structure and discipline.

But with the 18-year-old also absent through injury, Marshall was his own worst critic as Wests slipped to 10th and into must-win territory.

Farah's rough recovery from the physical and personal toll of Origin has placed even more onus on Marshall to create attacking opportunities.

"I'm probably trying too hard and that's been a problem in the past," he said.

"I've gone back to the drawing board this week and put all the fancy stuff away.

"As much as I've turned into a halfback now, the old five-eighth in me wants to come out every now and then.

"We were losing by 30 points (against Souths) and still trying to score tries from everywhere.

"That's not my game."

While Marshall analyses his performance, funnyman Fulton is relatively carefree.

"I don't know what to expect - I guess I'll have to get to know the game plan a little more," Fulton joked. "But I do know I'm definitely his best-looking halves partner yet."

after every loss, an article appears….......just stop, no more articles, lets see results on the field thanks.

Except you haven't turned into a halfback at all really and I don't think you ever will be. Sheens should be playing you at 5/8 and using your natural talents. This forever trying to turn players into things they aren't needs to stop. John Morris anyone?

Marshall blames himself, implores teammates to go back to basics

FOR four hours on Tuesday, Wests Tigers playmaker Benji Marshall pored over coverage of his team's seven-match winning streak this year. It's said that you learn more from your losses than you do from your wins, but Marshall certainly took a lot out of their hot streak.

From an office at the club's training base at Concord, he monitored his form then, as well as that of his side, and pondered how to find it again. ''It was through grinding games out, not from playing the old Tigers style where we throw it around,'' Marshall said yesterday. ''I think just lately we've been guilty of trying to go around sides and playing a bit too lateral, instead of playing through teams.

''We're going to have to go back to that. It's not rocket science. Sometimes we … complicate things. We were doing it the simple way and that was through grinding games out.''

After beginning the season with five losses from their opening six matches, the Tigers then turned their season around with seven straight wins.

But since then, they have lost four from five games, their most recent a defeat by South Sydney last Sunday, which sunk them to 10th position.

Before the side's clash with Parramatta on Monday, Marshall accepted much of the blame. That coverage of the Tigers' successful period this year also showed him how he should be playing.

''The thing that's let us down the most this year … maybe not us, but certainly me, is execution,'' Marshall said. ''Throughout those seven games, I was not making mistakes, not pushing passes, whereas the last six or seven weeks, I've been forcing the issue a bit too much. That's got to change for the next five weeks to get us into the semis. It starts Monday.''

Injuries have slowed the Tigers' progress and prevented Marshall from developing any combinations with his halves partners. Marshall has had seven different halves partners this season and will get his eighth on Monday night, Liam Fulton.

Fulton, ordinarily a back-rower, is not fazed by the challenge. In typical fashion, after coach Tim Sheens phoned him to tell him he was playing at five-eighth, he was straight on the phone again to Marshall to make light of the move. ''I texted him after the coach gave me a call and said: 'We'll be the best-looking halves combination the Tigers have ever had,'' Fulton said.

''Then,'' Marshall adds, ''he goes, 'at least all the kids will be wearing my number.'''

Fulton has played five-eighth for the club, but not since 2008\. ''Benji Fulton'' he said, when asked what sort of five-eighth he was. ''I suppose I'll be a little different. I'll try not to go out there and think that I'm a five-eighth, and try things that I can't do. I'll just ask the coach what he wants me to do … and do it.

''I don't see myself as a long-term [option], but I've got to fill in where I'm needed. If the coach thinks it's the best thing for the team, I'll do it. Whether it is or it isn't, we'll find out.''

The Tigers are dangerous when cornered. It is clear, with the finals so close but at the same time slipping away from them, they are desperate. ''We've got no choice. We've got to win,'' Fulton said. ''It's as simple as that. It starts now.''

He's far closer to Johnny Cronk at this point.

I wonder now if Sheens is encouraging them to see where they are on the table

With the talent at our disposal where we are doesn't paint a pretty picture at all

The players need to know this

Same old same old
* worst meters gained
* most missed tackles
* one of the worst in line breaks
But I'm still one of the first after a big loss to wear my jersey the next day in Newcastle ps yes I copped plenty of flack the last few weeks

It isn't the best option! How have they not figured it out already!
Coach wouldn't know what best was if it slapped him in the face

The irony about the posts is that when referring to Benji's comments as "we've hear it all before" same applies to your posts.

"Sheens doesnt know what hes doing", "Benji is not a half", I know better than the Aussie coach blah blah blah…...

No different to your support of Sheens.

So, in your opinion Sheens has got it spot on this year and obviously shouldn't be questioned?
