Wests Tigers Team in State Cup 2011

Unfortunately there isn't much else that can be done imo. They want to force Manly and Canberra to to play in NSW Cup, if they don't merge Balmain and Wests then there will be extra sides won't there?

Imagine if they were merged this year though, the side would be near unbeatable.

Merging is the next progressive step makes sence on a lot of fronts but don't be fooled that Sheens will use this as a source of player talent he has not used hardly anyone from those grades for his whole tenior. But in reality is a good move as 11yrs have passed and the old clubs are gone like it or not.

I can see it now….

Lolly Legs Crew merging with the W.O.M. dunking biscuits in their tea and heckling opposition's kickers..

We will be lolly legsing our own kicker if he comes from the Wests side of a merged State Cup Team.

If this happens I will miss the rivalry of Balmain vs Wests. It was always good fun.

haha I am with you on that one.

it is bad enough they did it to first grade, and now to state cup too. I am completely against it. As Staks says - Sheens!

I've heard that Sheens… isn't behind this and he is in favour of two teams as it gives him a bigger pool of players to choose from -- how true this is I'm not 100% sure.

Some of you who have contacts at Balmain & Wests should make some enquiries.

A larger pool of Players to choose from….. 😕

That's a good one...

If the teams merged, how would the leagues clubs grants work?

Currently, my understanding is the following:

Wests Ashfield - Magpies NSW Cup and junior rep teams
Ryde-Eastwood - Balmain Ryde Eastwood NSW Cup and junior reps
Balmain Leagues - contributes to Wests Tigers
Wests Campbelltown - Western suburbs junior football

If you merge the two state cup teams, how would the funding work?

He won't.
Feargal Sharkie's goalkicking career ended when we made him miss one from right in front at Campbelltown earlier this year…

That poor Morton kid went back to rugger after he got destroyed by the Lolly Legs crew

My favourite lolly legs memory was at Campbelltown Stadium where Western Suburbs smashed Balmain Ryde Eastwood and Gallant had a conversion from the sideline and they were shouting lollylegs right behind him and the ball went right over the blackdot!

Wests Magpies area is basically around Liverpool down through Campbelltown/Macarthur and down to around the Southern Highlands. Are you telling me that whole area shouldn't have their own NSW Cup side? What a joke!

99.9% of people that reside and follow League in the Liverpool, Campbelltown-Macarthur & Southern Highlands region don't care about NSW Cup. The interest that attracts the couple of hundred or so fans to watch the Magpies go around at Campbelltown on a Saturday afternoon are the 0.01% that do give a stuff and friends & family of the players. It has been a dying competition for years and the sooner the Game can once again return to a 3 Grade Format of 1st Grade, Reserve Grade and U/21's or U/23's the better off Rugby League will be. Greater transperancy and structure not only for the fans but for the players.

To me, cheering on the Maggies in NSW Cup isn't the same as cheering on the Maggies like I used to prior to the Joint-Venture. It never has felt the same and never will. Wests Tigers now fill that void for me. I have often turned up to NSW Cup Games watching Balmain and Western Suburbs go around with a vested interest on players who are pushing for First Grade or keeping a close eye on WT's contracted players, hoping they are performing well rather than wanting either side to win.

11 years on, and I do believe it's time that both clubs unified and became unified in all 3 Grades. Maybe then, just maybe, the fans might finally unite and get behind 'Wests Tigers' in its entirety, rather than continuing to see the Joint-Venture as still Balmain or Western Suburbs.

Hopefully an Independent Commission can bring about this change and dissolve the fledging NSW Cup, restructure the U/20's competition and provide Rugby League some very much needed structure, strengthening the progression and development of talent coming through for all clubs to help the prosperity of the Greatest Game of All.
