WestsTigers players caught in hepatitis A scare over Berries

Worst case

It can take weeks or months for people recovering from the illness to return to work, school or daily life.

They've just got to wait it out. Hepatitis is an inflammatory virus. Low fat diet, plenty of healthy fresh foods and fluids. Whenever the liver is under stress, it struggles to process fats and alcohol so they should be minimised and/or avoided.

I would imagine it could be transmitted via sweat, saliva and blood so I would say these blokes may be sidelined until given the all clear. The upside is that you can only get it once, and if you recover you won't contract it again. That said, you can be vaccinated against it too, which is probably what they'll do with the rest of the squad if it turns out these guys are infected.

Incubation time is approximately between 2 to 7 weeks before you start feeling the effects of the illness.
The symptoms for Hep. A are…. Fever, Nausea, diarrahoea bdominal pain, Fatigue.
There's no specific treatment for it.

The main remedy for Hep. A is - plenty of rest, a balanced diet ( avoid fatty foods ) drink lots of water and NO ALCOHOL.

Recovery time varies from a few weeks to a few months.
If those players have it, they wont be playing in the first few rounds :frowning:

Sounds like what got them in this problem to start with!!!!

My question is … Why did this story have to be leaked to the media ?

Out of the 400 or so registered NRL players , is our club the only one with a Hepatitis scare ?

On the back back of the papers today the headline reads ... HEPATIGERS .

You buy the telecrap?..Anyway,,,, Perhaps Wests Tigers are being pro active for once in this case in identifying an issue and dealing with it …I see it as a positive....

If people in the public or especially high profile athletes are found to have contracted the virus this company will be bankrupt in no time as they'll have the pants sued off them by all and sundry!

But think, there could be hundreds of thousands of people who could have eaten those berries! Anyone who's had a smoothie from Boost or any other juice bar could have it. Anyone who's had a berry tart from a cake shop could have it etc. Frozen berries are used all over the place, who knows who uses which brands?!

That's why its BS that the telecrap focuses on us. There could be several hundred thousand cases, dozens of players from within the NRL for all we know, yet they target our club as if we did something wrong! This is a public issue and to portray the club as being weak damages our brand.

Targeting the Club as if we did something wrong? That's just perception…

“As soon as the club were aware of it and the players put their hands up and said “we believe we’ve eaten these berries” the club doctor issued referrals for the boys to get tested,’’ Mayer told News Limited.
>
“From a duty of care point-of-view the club has taken this very seriously with the view of that the players are treated appropriately.’’
>
Tigers coach Jason Taylor added that he has seen no signs of illness in the players in question but that the club will monitor the situation accordingly.
>
“The doctor spoke to the guys about the brands of berries which have been recalled and how we’ll handle that going forward,’’ Taylor said.
>
“We were having a meeting before training and the doctor wanted to talk to the players about it because a couple of the boys had said they may have eaten the berries
>
“So the doctor briefed the group about what hep A is and how it works. It was all very straight forward.
>
“Now they’ll get a test, like anyone else would.’’

Reality if you read rather than look at a headline is the Club being Pro-active

We're not dumb Geo , yes the club is being pro-active . But it's another back page headline the club doesn't need 3 weeks out from the start of the comp IMO .

The moral of the story is before you put something in your mouth at least check where it came from. In China they use human faeces as fertiliser while Hep A runs rampant through the population so it is with little surprise that these berries are disease ridden. This is just the tip of the iceberg and will only get worse once the free trade agreement with China comes fully into play.

Yep our workers get paid $23 / hour ,they'd be flat out getting $23 a day

I'd doubt you would get local frozen fruits like that , too expensive

Also proves we need to change our packaging requirements asap

Well I live in remote WA and am able to from time to time to get fresh berries that are grown in Australia. I just buy a couple of punnets at a time and freeze them in zip-lock bags. It seems that most people are too lazy or tight with their money to care where what they eat comes from. The biggest thing that pisses me off is looking at labels and seeing that what is inside the packaging is made in Australia from imported and or local ingredients. What is the local ingredient, what the packaging?

It is enough to make you physically ill.

Or maybe its says a lot about how our two major supermarkets control exactly what goes on our shelves

Many businesses are forced to pay Woolies or Coles many ten of thousands of $$$ to just put their stock on these two's shelves

Remember
1/ Who lets this poor quality stock into our country and

2/ Who puts in on our shelves

Enough said

Wests Tigers can confirm that members of the senior playing group fronted Club Doctor Peter Lorenzos on Monday morning with a concern over products they had purchased that may have been contaminated with Hepatitis A.
>
The players, who consumed the product in question a number of weeks ago, have shown no symptoms and there are no confirmed cases of the infection.
>
On advice of Dr. Lorenzos the players will be closely monitored over time. This is isolated amongst a small group of players who had independently purchased the products.
>
Wests Tigers are confident that all players will remain healthy and can confirm that all will take to the field on Saturday night.
>
Wests Tigers are always concerned about welfare of players and are taking this very seriously. The Club is being guided by the Public Health Unit in being proactive to monitor any symptoms and prevent any unnecessary illness.
>
The Club will be making no further comment.

Here is a question for all those budding Drs out there

Will the club be required to let the Sharks know who are possibly infected
