What's with becoming a boxer ??

They are all doing it , Firstly it was Greg Oliphant and Tommy ,Big Bad Barry Hall, Kev Tamati

Now it is everyone SBW ,Cooper ,Andrew Flintoff (ex English Cricket Captain)

What they need to do is stick these blokes up against seasoned pros first up

They'll retire before you can say "paycheck"

What do others think , is a quick buck or are they serious ??

Theyre not giving the sport the respect it deserves….footy players waltzing in saying 'gimmee a pro bout' while young blokes nation wide have been slogging their guts out for years working their way up
Gimmick

You can't begrudge them for wanting to earn some easy coin but it's a slap in the face for boxing and your up and coming boxers. I enjoy watching boxing in general and not just Aussie fighters but these types of fights are just like seeing a stink down at the local. I would much prefer to watch some unknown boxers plying their trade any day of the week and that they just stuck to having these types of fights to raise money for charity.

Oliphant and Tommy was a charity bout in aid of injured Balmain player Denis Bendall I believe, notice that the converts don't go through the usual mainstream fights that born and bred boxers do, their opponents are hand picked and the 'match makers' are highly unlikely to select an opponent who can defeat them, it is a farce I agree.

The 100k bet to KO Cooper

KERRY Packer's former personal trainer and ex-Newtown halfback Barry Wood has challenged agent Khoder Nasser to a $100,000 bet that his son, former NRL player Nat Wood, would beat Quade Cooper in a fight.

"If Cooper and Nasser are deadly serious about fighting, I have a 40-year-old son who's never had a fight in a ring. He's perfect fodder for one of Nasser's show ponies," Wood said. "Give us neutral judges and l'll bet Nasser $100k that Nat Wood towels up his newest stiff.

"Johnny Lewis will train Nat, give him a good reference and will also give the fight credibility ... despite Nasser and Cooper's involvement."

Nat is the brother of Garth Wood, who won the Contender series and then beat Anthony Mundine. I've seen footage of Nat sparring top-15 world-ranked American middleweight Danny Jacobs and he looks impressive.

This fight wouldn't even go the distance, Nat might be 40 but he knows how to throw em and would be the easiest 100k his old man's earnt. Won't happen but I had a laugh about what Barry said and thought it was relevant to the OP.

You'd find all these former footballers and so called boxers were never team players, that's why they end up in the ring. They are selfish and always have a point to prove, that they are the best. In Coopers' ring stands his manager, that shares his clients same interest, money and no skill. I'll tell you what, I'll jump in the ring for 10k with this guy to kick start my career.

Nat Wood played for balmain Easts etc etc?

And the Warriors as well, when he was at Balmain when the coach got wind that Wood had signed a contract with the Roosters '12 months' in advance he let Nathan go straight away, he was a nuggety type of player and even at the age of 40 given his families genes he would still be a hard competitor, remember when Mundine first came on the scene he had all these over the hill stiffs on his undercard so Nathan would be a great match for any of them.

If they're serious they have a funny way of showing it. SBW just fights bloated geriatrics. Mundine and Haumono are the only two who have shown a reasonable degree of talent. Haumono could have been a decent world-level fighter if he was more active and got serious. Hoppa at least was prepared to take chances with his opponents but just wasn't talented enough. He didn't have the punching power or durability to go very far but he was decent enough at a national level. Flintoff will probably take the SBW path - fight people who aren't going to hurt him too much. If they've got a profile the better. I'm thinking Brian Nielsen would be a target after a few fights if he wanted.

I wanna see SBW step in the ring with Brock Lesnar then we'll really see tough the guy is

I want to see a boxing match Gunner, not witness a murder.

As long as Brock takes him the distance and inflicts lots of pain and suffering I'll be happy

Maybe Brock could have a handicap match and fight SBW and Cooper at the same time

It is all about the ego.
It probably sounds pretty impressive to stand in the pub next to someone who doesn't know any better and say "yeah..I used to be a boxer".
Would love to see most of these blokes fight someone decent and cop a hammering, especially Quade 😛ray:

They are great sportsman in their chosen professions but none are 'boxers'.

There is something very wrong about this. They should be made fight ranked professionals. If they can mix it with them then fair enough. I would suggest they would all get their arses handed to them including Mundine if they were made to fight fighters of repute.

The problem is that they are at the bottom of the tree and it would be wrong to put them in the ring against seasoned killers. So they will all just have poor fights with big purses whilst ridgy didge fighters are doing it tough.

I don't mind them easing their way into the pro ranks but some of them aren't at all serious about developing their skills and challenging themselves. Haumono and Hoppa at least fought some decent (for Aust) heavyweights. Mundine for his faults has fought some decent fighters even if he the main feature of his career has been avoiding the really tough fights. SBW fights people about 20 years after their prime.

Would love to see hoppa or haumono or SBW take on a family friend he is well known in the boxing game , HIs name is Lucas BIG DADDY Browne . He would destroy all 3 of them . SBW Keeps dodging him . Check him out on YouTube

As $BW is supposed to be the NZ champ you think he would want to fight Big Daddy - but the chance of that happening is zero
He would be lucky to go one round.
If Botha actually trains for his fight with Williams it might prove be the last time he wants to put on the gloves anyway.

I've seen him on Friday night fights a few times Monkey. He's very promising. Hoppa and SBW would be wasting everyone's time - your guy would bomb them out pretty early on. Haumono would be a lot more competitive if he was at his peak.

What's the plan for Big Daddy? I saw he won the Commonwealth title. Is he planning to fight OS?

Botha is 44 and lost 4 of his past 5\. Balanced against that he's fought a lot better quality of fighter than SBW and these days he seems to lose to guys who are 20 something and zero who are looking to fight name fighters and build there record a bit more. You're right though if he gets a decent prep he'll be a tough fight.

Maybe a rule should be brought in saying u cant turn pro until u have had 5 ametaur fights. That may deter the easy payday farces
