Where Does This Leave Wests Tigers?

If they are serious about this there would at least be a team in Perth and some gone from Sydney. Just how that happens should be decided on profitability and TV ratings. If you are on the bottom of those lists then you are gone.

I heard on radio about studies that have been done on relocating sports teams. There is a critical list of criteria such as needing to be relatively successful, marketable, well-known, widely supported, etc. Unless most of the boxes are ticked apparently it is a very hard sell.

But whatever happens I think we'll see a WA team - it fits nicely with timezone/kick-off times, fits well with the national direction and there is plenty of money over there now…

While I have concerns about the future of Balmain Leagues Club, what does this financial mess mean to the future Of Wests Tigers? Am I correct in believing that Wests Tigers are doing better than many of the NRL clubs, financially?

Cant see us going anywhere, as posted before we did the right thing by the nrl when we merged. Also the nrl need a strong brand name in the south west of sydney,and that what we are and getting bigger each year. On money, most of our dollars are generated outside the league clubs through the private sector. We weaned ourself off sole dependency of the league club years ago. Although nothing is certain, if the back office continue to set the bench mark for other teams to follow we will be in the mix in the same format for years to come–-I hope

Given the turmoil that the game has gone through with the super league war, teams being punted (someone said to me today-'where's my team' being a norths supporter) the dramas with souths I can see why the NRL has taken the approach whereby it would prefer clubs wither and die rather than force anything. This may well be less likely if the clubs get more funds from the new TV deals meaning clubs like cronulla continue to survive. The only change I can see is teams being added if/when the time looks right.

A lot of those Souths members aren't ticketed - or if they are they must have plenty of cash to spare because they certainly aren't turning up to games. Spending $30 on a car sticker and a hat doesn't exactly make you a die-hard fan.

This is the problem of the game. Cronulla is a shambles, always has been, always will be. However, apparently everything will be fine if the NRL provides a hopeless administration more money. Defies business sense. The new TV deal will not save clubs - it will just mean higher wages for players.

It is all well and good to state the NRL will let them wither and die, but when do we get to the pointy end and the NRL actually cuts them off? When reading that Manly has asked for an advance payment of its season 2012 grant, you have to ask if this is sustainable while allowing them to play at Brookvale. When is enough enough? The NSWRL had no issues in cutting Wests and Newtown in 1983 to allow Canberra and Illawarra into the competition, why can't the NRL do something similar?

Cut both the seaside teams for a start, I reckon. Get rid of them. There are too many teams in the comp.
We need every side to play each other twice. More mergers or relocations are also necessary. I can see the irony in a proposed Easts & Souths merger as well. Ha-ha.

I think "cunno" is right on the money too. With the NRL it would seem to be a case of 'once bitten, twice shy' when it comes to making teams do what they would like. The draft and restraint of trade comes to mind. Both have been used to defeat the League in the past.

I'm a great believer in home and away and belive the current system is unfair - the only way to have a true home and away comp is to split the competition in to two conferences - i have been pushing this setup for the last couple of years - Conference A consists of the 9 Sydney clubs and Conference B of the existing 7 teams from outside Sydney plus 2 of either :
Central Coast, 2nd Brisbane team, 2nd NZ team, Perth, Central Qld, PNG.

Each Team plays every team in their own conference twice on a home and away basis and play every side from the other conference once ( home one year away the next ) - this equates to 25 games which allows at least 1 probably 2 free weeks for rep football.

By having all the Sydney teams grouped we go back to the suburban rivalries which i believe would increase interest in Sydney and generate bigger crowds and viewing audiences in Sydney. TV would get an extra game each week and would get blockbuster matchups most weeks. The teams in Conference B would have to be compensated for extra travel costs.

The point I am trying to make is that the current NRL doesn't have the wherewithall to take difficult decisions when it comes to the make up of the competition. They don't reflect the attitudes or decision making of the NSWRL of the past. Some would say they have learned from the NSWRL mistakes others would say they should grow a pair and make some tough decisions. At the time of the NSWRL cuts I was not impressed with the way Wests was treated and Newtown to a lesser extent. So I guess if I was a current Cronulla supporter I wouldn't be impressed either if Cronulla was cut today. It looks to me, and I could be wrong, that the NRL does not want anymore major dramas or upheavals and therefore are not willing to cut/merge/relocate teams. They are happy to hurry up and wait for something to happen. There is no pressure on them, publically that I have noticed, to make changes as the game itself is in a good state enjoying good support from the people I speak to and the media coverage, memberships are reportedly going up etc so there is nothing pushing the NRL to act at this time. If Cronulla or another club falls over then they will have no choice but how long has Cronulla been falling over- seems forever and they have just built up for next year 😕

Wests & Balmain made the biggest 'sacrifice' to become WT and that decision alone means that they would and should ALWAYS be a sydney based club. Sharks are a logical choice for a perth side. Even 9 games at nib stadium perth and 3 at shark park would see a new era for the nrl while keeping some sharks die hards happy.
