Hi guys.

I have a ball autographed by the 1988 Balmain Tigers. I can't recognise a couple of the names. Any help filling in the blanks or corrections would be appreciated.

Thanks.

1.
Kerry Hemsley
Paul Sironen
Wayne Pearce
James(?) Bell
Darren Riley
????????????

2.
Paul Beaven(?)
Peter Lomax(?)
Russel Gartner(?)
Gary Bridge

3.
Stephen Roach
Ross Conlon
Michael Pobje???????????

4.
Bruce McGuire
Gary Schofield
Benny Elias
Peter Camroux
???????????
Gary Jack
Jaimie Davidson
Scott Gale

Schofield & Bridge's sigs date the ball as 86 or 87 - but Mick Pobjie only came to Balmain in 88 - so I am confused!

Schoey did not come to Sydney in 88 & Bridge moved to Easts!

Grant didn't arrive until 89 yoss - and it does not look like one of his that I have!

I'm not convinced the ball was signed at the same time - possibly it was done over a few seasons but I'll defer to you on what James Grant signature looks like!

I'd agree with that yoss!

Still I do have Grant's sig from 89 & it is not similar!

My memory is fading on players from that era. I recognise most of the names on the list but if some of them are the actual names then I don't remember them! Bell and Riley I'm mainly talking about. Paul Bevan and Peter Camroux (who I believe later coached lower grades at Balmain) I remember. Jamie Davidson was John's younger brother, Peter Lomax is a blank. I used to watch reserve grade fairly closely in those days when you had to play half a game to be a reserve in 1sts. It was always interesting to see someone get taken off in the reggies after playing a blinder knowing they'd probaby be back later on.

Bell, Riley & Lomax never made firsts!

Do you remember Phil Dotti yoss?

The name doesn't ring a bell. Michael Brown was the person who I thought of when I was thinking back to those days. Played a stack of reserves at hooker behind Benny, looked good when he filled in but when Elias left he just faded away. Hanrahah (sp?) was another, our beloved boss Stephen Humphries I remember well from those days too - legs pumping away.

Phil Dotti was the Koori winger who used to get a run in the last 15-20 of most reserve grade games (from 86-89 - to a "Dotti -Dotti" chant from the Leichhardt Hill) & more than often he scored one or two tries!!

He was a cult hero who could not play many more minutes as he only had one functional lung!

The Wok actually rated Mick Brown a technically-better dummy-half than Benny!! But he did fade under Alan Jones' so-called coaching!

Gavin Hanrahan was a tough centre in the Pobjie mould who featured in our 85 Panasonic Cup Final win! He was also a Knights foundation player in 88!

Humph was solid & played some quality 1st grade games in either Jimmy's absence - or on the wing!

Pobjie mode? You mean slow? Only joking. Yeah those were the days when you relied on these blokes who were in reserve grade for years being able to fill in every now and then. Kevin Hardwick was my favourite.

Thanks for your input guys.

I was guessing it was 88 because I thought that's when Pobje arrived. Maybe it is not Pobje's signature then. I should have remembered we had Hanley not Schofield in 88.

The ball was a prize in a raffle at the Leagues Club. Won by a contractor employee who sold it to me many years later.

Their names just popped into my head when I was trying to read the signatures. So it looks like I got them right? I don't know why their names came to me. I used to love watching all 3 grades. Something I miss about the modern game.

Could the coaching staff have signed the ball?

I believe it may be Michael Perry's autograph instead of Pobjie!

Perry played 7 games for us in 86 as a replacement hooker for Benny or as bench back-rower!

Also - Beaven, Lomax & Gartner are 100% correct!

I'd definitely date the ball as 1986!

Wow! Well done Redemption. The signature looks more like a Perry than a Pobje. Thanx for your help.

I'm still struggling with the signature to the right of Sirro & the other below Peter Camroux.

Because it's related to first grade rugby league. Not junior development.

Balmain dont play first grade rugby league. Not even NSW Cup.

They did in relation to the topic in question.

Well move it to the Balmain section of this forum please not WT. Put it this way, they are not the WT and this is the WT section..
