Which team will get the 18th Franchise

That comment is almost as arrogant as Americans about living the USA. Not everyone wants to live in Australia.
Basing a team in Port Moresby is feasible and the boost to the economy especially with the backing of both governments would be significant. Players signed to play with the team would enjoy a very good lifestyle living at say Ela Beach. There are plenty of five star dive resorts to enjoy a break and Cairns is not far away.

Now that would only apply to any Expats, I couldn’t see the whole team living there, even though Ella Beach is quite pleasant.
And they would be harassed something shocking, and any female partners would last about 5 minutes. Plus the rock star treatment wouldn’t be well received by the local players.
I’ve had some great times in PNG/ Pom but it’s certainly not an aspirational place to live.
A lot of thought/planning will need to go in to make it work.

Look, have you lived in PNG?

Ok yes it is arrogant and many PNG players would be fine living in PNG. Infact they would like it as they would get their wage, live of barely anything and give all their money to their Won Tok's (family/extended family).

If Australian players went there and it was done right, it would be great. But they would need strong protection and would have to settle somewhere really nice. If the players had an island to base themselves out of and could just train there, people would stay.

Moresby, is very much a 3rd world country. Maybe you could pay 1.5M and have a single halfback come there. It would be way over, but yea pay overs and get a few key stars to impart skills, then hire local talent.

Highland forwards are going to kill it though. Thugby here we come.

Actually I've lived in many countries. If you compare everything to Australia, then it's a high benchmark to achieve.

Are we saying that you can only play sport if you live in a first world country?

This is about more than just where players want to live. Even if the PNG side was made up entirely of PNG players, it wouldn't matter. I think it would actually give the side more authenticity and support. That's what the NRL wants...a well supported team, that grows the participation base and feeds juniors into the system. They will get 100% of the PNG sponsorship money and probably even attract Australian sponsors. This will serve to grow and develop the junior base there. Not to mention more TV rights money.

We wonder where all the players are going to come from if we add a new Australian based team, yet we complain about the conditions of the one team that will immediately provide junior talent - albeit raw talent.

We are seeing a phenomenon where players are going back to their roots. Look at Tonga and Samoa. Knocking back Aussie selection to play for their homeland. You will see some players start to go back and give back to their country of origin.

I'm tipping an explosion in participation numbers if the juniors aspect is done right. You have a whole country of fanatical league players and fans that are totally untrained and undeveloped. Within 10 years, the pathway to NRL will act as a big motivator - think Brazil and soccer.

My biggest concern is not whether people will go and play in PNG. It is the potential talent drain from PNG to Australian based clubs.

However, the attraction for the player is they get to set themselves up with a low cost of living at some point in their career. The party boys won't want to go, but serious footballers will consider it. Not everyone is the same.

I would love the Bears to get back in and "Pacific Bears" has a great tone to it. Based in Sydney could work as well with the representation of pacific nations people there!
A team that represents North Sydney, PNG, Tonga, Fiji, Samoa?

Why stop there? Why not call it the Pacific Perth North Sydney Wellington PNG Darwin BearRams?

I would much rather a straight up authentic PNG team than trying to merge Pacific countries into a single artificial team and play out of North Sydney of all places, probably the least Pacific area in Sydney.

The las vagas bears.

Reasons?
1. Playing 2 games there is going to take america by storm
2. You just know the north sydney bears are going to try and tag on to who ever.

Ps maybe the vegas trip is just a piss up for the nrl suits in which case i will be wrong about 1 but right about norths.
