Why is the tigers defence so bad?

Part of the blame has to go to our recruiting department.
They have always scouted talent with the ball over old school hardheads who like to make their presence felt in defence.
Wests Tigers has always been an entertainers club. I love that as most of you do but they have to get the balance right and sadly they never do.

The sort of player that we should have been looking at is some one like Beau Scott.
Not only is he a good defender and a hard hitter, but has an attitude that rubs off on others.
He was a big contributor for the big effort from the Parra Forwards last year
He was worth every shonky dollar that they paid him.

Your right Gold Coast….you need a forward that sets the bar for the others to follow. Beau Scott was great for Parra last year.

Why is our defence bad?
- we play a lot of showponies that are better with the ball in the hand, than they are are doing dirty work
- we have next to no-one that can make one on one tackles
- we must conced the most metres after contact of any team in the NRL
- our edge defenders could not read a play if they were given a script

We are constantly getting pushed back up the middle and defending on the back foot leads to yardage and points by the opposition.

Watching games live, the one thing that sticks out to me is our line speed. The top teams are always pushing up to the point they are pretty much off side every tackle. The tigers seem to be one step behind and this extra time the opposition has makes a big difference.

The second thing is our edge defence which is non existent. Moses has no idea in defence constantly rushing up on his own, Kev is often caught in no mans land and tackles the air, while Nofoaluma doesn't know whether to come up or stay back. Against the cowboys they moved up together and looked amazing, not sure why they can't do it every game.

I think weve covered about every possible reason of what it takes to be a poor defensive player/team. Can i add poor discipline to give away stupid penalties on a constant basis that leads to fatigue.

3 key things that will decide our season.
1\. Defence
2\. Brooks
3\. Hooker

1\. It needs to improve a lot.

2\. He needs to take control and own this team, take em on, get his hands on the ball more, be enthusiastic.

3\. As much as a lot of Tigers fans and Robbie bashers don't want to admit it, Robbie is going to leave a void in this position.
We don't have an 80min quality hooker to slot in so we need to sort out the hooker issue pronto.
I feel Taylor's butt comes down to him getting this right, if we're a shambles around the ruck Taylor will be out on his arse and rightly so.
Show us your justification for getting rid of Farah.

These are all pretty obvious areas we need to address, if the defence doesn't improve the other two won't matter and I'm not sure we'll improve our defence enough to be contenders, just don't have the bodies capable of it when things get tough IMO.

It will be interesting to see if a hooker can get on with playing the hooker role as it is supposed to be played, feeding the halves to create opportunities for the team…I just got used to Farah playing for the penalty from dummy half more times than I care to remember..

I imagine this has been asked here. But I have to ask it anyway.

Why is the tigers defence so bad?

There seems to be a few issues:
Pack size, we seem to be smaller then the top teams. But Melbourne and other teams can defend better then us and it's not just a size thing.

coordination, Our coordination sucks. When I see Manly, St George and others their coordination is far better. Melbourne are often spot on. We just leave a lot of overlaps. Jamie Lyon and SKD seem to be able to read the plays pretty well and their winger knows whom to cover.

I remember Liam Fulton just being a tackling gun. It was like we worked hard and tackled the other team through brute force. I can only remember Beau Ryan working out how to be a try saver. Other then an early game in 201X where we beat Melbourne 6-4 on defence. We never seemed to get defence as a side.

What are we doing wrong?

Good question. Our defence was suspect on the edges where Kev, Moses, Brooks, Rankin defend. They made others Lawrence, Simona, Nofa, Teddy look bad covering them.
I believe Idris will be an asset defensively and paired with Simona they will be a good centre pairing. Nofo and Kev on the wings should be fine to worry about their own games and not cover on the inside and rush in. The key is Moses and Brooks they need to standup but I think Moses wants to tackle whereas Brooks is more solid, seems to let players run straight by him. They need help and ET and Aloai will have to lineup next to them.

Just too many liabilities sees the rest of the team drop their heads.

True, from memory it did seem as though he got the penalties early in his career, maybe later either ref's were coping it, he tried it too often or wasn't as quick as he used to be so the player is closer to being square or all of the above.

In a lot of the videos I was impressed with Liddell support play I think that's going to be a big factor as well.

One rather big thing that is forgottenin the criticisms of Farah ,is that with the exception of 2005 with Prince and somegames with Lui before he imploded, Farah only saw a first grade halfback when he looked across the field at the opposition half.
Marshall wasn't a halfno matter how hard Sheens tried to make him one.and he even tried to make Farah one at one stage.
He gets caned by some for his service and trying too much himself. But how many times did he get a ball from the ruck and see a dogs breakfast of out of position players , or worse no runner at all to take a ball. Plenty!!!
I'm not saying that he made no mistakes, but he has hadto put up with some clowns around him at times.

would love to know how much time and effort JT and his defence coach put in, after watching the players in the nines, I would say zero, we still have no idea, JT will need to fall on his sword after 5-6 weeks if we get the effort as last year.

Continually over powered and muscled out of the contest is the main cause. Our main defenders are struggling to look after their own patch of field so most of the time they offer little or no protection to the little men. Sorry to be negative but without recruiting a couple of known defenders we are going to struggle.

In saying the above Iam willing to get egg on my face but I think Iam pretty safe

No need to write full page posts .
Simple really
1/A high percentage of the players in the NRL squad are reserve grade quality
2/ The main reason is the coach has no idea or has his assistants simple really.. employ a coach that knows how! problem solved.
